UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2017

CROATIA

–WHITEWINE

ILOK CELLARS CLASSIC

GRASEVINA 2016

Croatia

TASTING NOTE: This offers suggestions of green

herbs, apple, citrus and mineral on the nose. Grape-

fruit citrus tones on the palate with an underpinning

mineral note. A good pairing for pork chops, seafood

or a charcuterie plate. (Vintages panel, March 2017)

KESSLER RIESLING 2014

AC Alsace Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Riesling Grand Cru

Kessler opens with a very clear, mineral and herbal

bouquet of ripe and dried white fruits in the back-

ground. From marl and sandstone soils this is a pure,

finessed and very elegant Riesling of great elegance.

It reveals a very long, finessed and salty finish with

a tight mineral structure and a really warm soul in its

fruit flavors. The salinity is fascinating here and lingers

for minutes. Great purity here. Drink Date: 2017-

2030. Score:

JOSEPH CATTIN HATSCHBOURG

GEWURZTRAMINER 2015

AC Alsace Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: On the nose, luscious peach notes

are slightly muddied by earthier notes. On the palate,

generous sweetness boosts all the fruit flavors to an

intense lusciousness. There is balance in the form of

lemony freshness and a lovely tangy texture. This is

momentarily quite intense. Score:

– REDWINE

MULDERBOSCH FAITHFUL HOUND 2014

WOWestern Cape

TASTING NOTE: (30% new oak): Bright ruby-red.

Sexy spicy oak lifts aromas of currant, mulberry,

menthol and chocolate. Plush, fine-grained and

sweet, combining an almost chocolatey ripeness with

perfectly integrated acidity and lovely dried herb

lift. Savory, structured and subtly intense; balanced

already but built for a slow and graceful evolution in

bottle. A wonderfully pure and delineated blend with

a sophisticated seamless texture, terrific complexity

and lovely floral lift. Score:

92

THE CHOCOLATE BLOCK 2015

WO Swartland

(Boekenhoutskloof)

TASTING NOTE: ... for the first time made entirely

from Swartland fruit, which [Marc Kent ] describes as

a “significant step” for the brand. A blend of 71%

Syrah, 15%Grenache Noir, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon,

5% Cinsault and 1%Viognier ... So what does

sourcing the grapes exclusively from the Swartland

change? Essentially, I think the wine has become a

little more aromatically brooding, the palate a little

more savoury. On the nose, red and black fruit, some

floral fragrance and spice but also some black olive

which perhaps wasn’t there before. The palate is

broad and super-rich, the tannins very fine – Kent is

famously sceptical of “freshness” preferring weight

and structure and this is indeed a hearty wine, the

14.74% alcohol bringing just a little heat to the finish.

All in all, however, it’s a flavoursome drop. Score:
