CHAMPAGNE

CONT’D

LOUIS BROCHET HBH 1

ER

CRU

CHAMPAGNE 2002

AC, France

TASTING NOTE: Crafted to honour Alain

Brochet’s father, Henri Brochet-Hervieux, the

HBH is produced only in those years deemed

truly exceptional. The 2002 growing season

was certainly that in Champagne. The vintage

elicited high praise, with many critics seeing

it as the best of the decade; this wine certainly

makes a strong case for that claim. It’s abso-

lutely lovely, with attractive biscuit and toast

notes, baked apple and floral tones and a

smoky minerality. This is a wine of exceptional

balance and depth. Just beautiful. (Vintages

panel, Feb. 2017)

MOËT & CHANDON GRAND VINTAGE

BRUT CHAMPAGNE 2008

AC, France

TASTING NOTE: This is a nicely youthful

Champagne for eight years, still showing lemon

colour and a lifted nose of lemon, honey nougat,

light toast and brioche. It’s light to medium-

bodied, firm, mouth-watering and very bright on

the palate. The length is excellent. Brighter and

more energetic than I recall from Moet. Quite

charming and energetic at the same time.

NICOLAS FEUILLATTE BRUT

CHAMPAGNE 2008

AC, France

TASTING NOTE: From the excellent 2008

vintage, this is a very complete, ripe wine. It is

rich, packed with crisp white fruits that are

developing into a structured, concentrated

wine with a great future. The balance between

acidity and dosage is just right. Drink ideally

from 2018. Editors’ Choice. Score:

93

RUINART R DE RUINART BRUT

CHAMPAGNE

AC, France

TASTING NOTE: From the mid-size house

claiming to be the oldest in Champagne (est

1729), this is [a] tidy, crisp yet youthful blend

on pinot and chardonnay aged three years. It

is very nicely composed and balanced with

complex aromas of dried fruit, well integrated

toast and brioche. Expensive for entry level

“brut non-vintage”, but also very classy.

Excellent length. Score:

92
