Seven-Year-Old Canadian Whisky & Pure

Maple Syrup, Product of Canada

(Maison des Futailles)

TASTING NOTE: The coming of spring brings in the

year’s first harvest: maple syrup. Sugar shacks will

be opening and the sap running this March. Bring

the fun home with a bottle of Sortilege Prestige, a

uniquely Canadian blend of 100 per cent rye whisky

aged seven years in white oak barrels mixed with first

run Quebec maple syrup (category one, extra clear,

considered the finest). FromMaison des Futailles, it’s

sweet, but not too, with true maple syrup flavours bal-

anced by good whisky power throughout. Score:

FORTIFIED

PORT

QUINTA DO PORTAL LBV PORT 2011

DOP

TASTING NOTE: The 2011 Late Bottled Vintage Port

is a blend of 35%Touriga Nacional, 35%Tinta Roriz

and 30%Touriga Franca, bottled in 2015. It comes

in at 108 grams per liter of residual sugar and was

bottled with a long cork. This has big fruit and big

flavor and a nuanced finish with plums, rhubarb and

herbs. (It reminded me a bit of a recent Auru.) There’s

a hint of a high-toned note, but it folds into the whole

readily and disappears. The tannins are there, too,

but well integrated. Add nice concentration in the mid-

palate and this LBV is built to age and develop ... It

doesn’t have to be held like a true Vintage Port ... but

it will certainly be better in five years than it is today.

WARRE’S QUINTA DA CAVADINHA

VINTAGE PORT 2004

Bottled 2006, DOP

Mark Squires awarded this wine a rating of

90

points,

calling it “... sensual and beautifully textured, with velvet

and a caressing feel ...” and suggesting a drinking

window from 2016 to 2039. (

TASTING NOTE: There’s a beautiful nose of licorice,

raspberry and mineral. What fruit this has – and

there’s loads of it, yet this is balanced and refined. Full,

medium sweet and silky. Racy and captivating for the

vintage. Best after 2015. Score:

SHERRY

EMILIO LUSTAU ALMACENISTA

FINO DEL PUERTO OBREGÓN

DO

TASTING NOTE: La Bodega Obregón runs a popular

tavern in El Puerto de Santa María, where they serve

their own Sherries as well as selections they sell to

Lustau for the Almacenista line. This Fino del Puerto

is intense in citrus and salty notes, like preserved

lemons. Its texture is rustic, yet delightfully fresh,

completely enveloping the wine’s intensity. Score:
