UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2017

WESTCOTT ESTATE PINOT NOIR 2013

6

VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Escarpment

TASTING NOTE: Smooth, silky and seductive Niagara

Pinot Noir from one of the fastest rising wineries in

the region reputation-wise. Medium-bodied and

smooth with aromas of dark cherry, violets and earth.

There were less than two tons an acre for this wine

so it’s intensely flavoured. Pair with grilled chicken.

WILDASS RED 2014

6

VQA Niagara-on-the-Lake

(Stratus Vineyards)

“Wildass, with its donkey logo and Wild West type-

face, is the casual brand made at Stratus, a high-end

winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Stratus winemaker

J-L Groux, a native of France’s Loire Valley, is a master

blender who’s crafting mould-breaking cuvées”

(Beppi Crosariol,

The Globe and Mail

, Jan. 9, 2013).

Wildass Red combines a whack of different red wine

grapes each vintage, but it’s consistently fruit-forward,

bright and savoury with easygoing tannins. Pair with

burritos or free-range-beef burgers.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

BURROWING OWL MERITAGE 2014

6

BC VQA Okanagan Valley

TASTING NOTE: The first thing that strikes me about

this is the intense, pure cassis on the nose. It’s very

attractive. The palate is more complex, with meaty

undertones and lots of quality oak, but the black

currant fruit is there, too. This is an unabashedly full

bodied, intense, and commercially appealing wine,

and very well done in that style. Score:

FOREIGN AFFAIR

THE EMBRACE 2016

6

VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: An unconventional ripasso-style

blend of Gamay grapes cuddling and canoodling with

Cabernet Franc, this wine serves up notions of juicy

strawberry, mixed berry compote and licorice. It’s

new to Vintages and priced to please, so embrace it

with stews featuring beef and autumn vegetables,

or give it (along with a hug) to a special someone.

THE TRAGICALLY HIP FULLY COMPLETELY

GRAND RESERVE RED 2015

6

VQA Niagara Peninsula

(Stoney Ridge)

TASTING NOTE: This is the third Tragically Hip wine,

which includes the Chardonnay, red blend and now

grand red blend...this is the best of the lot so far:

woodsy, cassis, with a dark fruit underlay and smoky

linger. Score:

THIRTY BENCH WINEMAKER’S BLEND

RED 2015

6

VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment

TASTING NOTE: Emma Garner took home Wine-

maker of the Year honours at the 2015 Ontario

Wine Awards, so you know she was at the top of her

game when she made this wine. A blend of 75%

Cab Franc with dollops of Merlot and Cab Sauvignon,

this beauty shows complex notes of dark cherry, ripe

raspberry, fig, Christmas cake, vanilla and cocoa

powder. The finish is long and layered. Enjoy it tonight

through 2024 with tourtière. (Vintages panel,
