UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2017

BERINGER QUANTUM 2014

Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: This would be a straightforward

Bordeaux red blend if not for the 5%Petite Sirah

within. Together, it’s 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12%

Merlot, 7%Cabernet Franc and 2%Malbec as well,

sourced from Howell Mountain and valley floor sites.

Dusty and herbal, the wine is thick and sizably tannic,

with dense black fruit, leather and coffee. Cellar

Selection. Score:

BURGESS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013

Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (at a

very fair price, by the way) has beautiful blackcurrant

fruit, blackberry, underlying earth and spice, medium

to full body, a long finish and sweet, moderate tannin.

A rather classic example of Napa viticulture and still

available at a shockingly realistic price. This beautiful

wine is young, but reflects the greatness of 2013,

and should promise to improve and evolve for another

15-20 years. Score:

CA’ MOMI ZINFANDEL 2015

Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: Sweet chocolate, mocha, coffee

and espresso from oak aging on the nose of this

robust Zin. Juicy and full-bodied with smooth, supple

layers of fleshy black plums. This wine was aged in

American oak barrels. Pair with a pepper steak.

MER SOLEIL SILVER

UNOAKED CHARDONNAY 2015

Monterey County

Crafted by Charlie Wagner, this Chablis-inspired

Chardonnay was first made in 2005. The unique

bottle is a nod to the stainless steel and cement

tanks, rather than oak, in which it was fermented and

aged. This will offer up intense, profoundly delicious

ripe apple and pear notes with a precise mineral tone

and a lovely citrus-infused acidity. Creamy, rich and

layered, this will be a great pairing for roast chicken

in a cream sauce with garlic and herbs.

BELLE GLOS LAS ALTURAS VINEYARD

PINOT NOIR 2014

Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County

(Joseph J. Wagner)

TASTING NOTE: These are big, bold, unabashedly

fruity wines ... The 2014 Las Alturas Santa Lucia

Highlands is full, dense and thick, though flavor-wise

the juiciest of the bunch. Its fruit is blue, cut with

savory anise and brown spice. (Esther Mobley,
