STAG’S LEAP WINE CELLARS ARTEMIS

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014

Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon

Artemis is a tasty entry-level offering from Stag’s

LeapWine Cellars. Deep, rich and resonant, but very

much medium in body, the 2014 offers lovely

resonance throughout. Sweet red cherry, plum, spice

and mocha give the 2014 its plump, juicy personality.

STAGS’ LEAP WINERY MERLOT 2014

Napa Valley

Winemaker Christophe Paubert aged this Merlot

in French oak barrels (35% new) for 16 months. This

deliberate lesser percentage of new oak imparts

structure, ageability and a slight spice complexity to the

wine while still allowing the fresh fruit flavors to take

centre stage. Look for juicy dark cherry fruit, blueberry,

violet and spice notes, and pair this with venison stew

with root vegetables and wild mushrooms.

TOM GORE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014

California

TASTING NOTE: This blend of cabernet sauvignon

(90%) with small contributions from malbec, merlot,

petit verdot, and petite sirah, was sourced from

California’s North and Central Coasts. It was aged

16 months in French and American barrels. The fruit

is richly flavoured with ripe sweetness at the core

and very good layering that makes for a complex

profile. The fruit-acid balance is very good and the

tannins are easy-going, making this suitable for

drinking now. Enjoy it over the next four or five years.

JOSEPH PHELPS

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014

Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: ... the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8%Merlot and

the rest Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. It

saw 18 months in a combination of both French and

American casks. This is their biggest cuvée (27,000

cases) and it is a beauty. The 2014 is supple, with

silky tannins, dark plum, blackcurrant and licorice-in-

fused fruit with a touch of spice, a lushness on the

attack and mid-palate, and a silky finish. This wine

was meant for early drinking, but there is no doubt it

has the concentration and overall balance to age

nicely for 15-20 years. Score:

firm, dry mouthfeel make this medium-bodied wine

easy to appreciate. It smells like fresh cherries
