UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2017

CONVENTO SAN FRANCISCO 2010

DO Ribera del Duero

TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Convento San Francisco

was quite impressive. Pure Tempranillo fermented

in stainless steel, it aged for 15 months in French

(70%) and American oak barrels, and yet it’s not

oaky at all. Of course, the extra time in bottle must

have polished the edges and the aromas, and is now

starting to show some complexity and tertiary,

developed aromas with hints of truffles, mushrooms

and decayed leaves over a core of ripe fruit. The

palate is medium to full-bodied, with fine-grained,

slightly dusty tannins giving it character and an

elegant rusticity. 46,763 bottles produced. Drink

date: 2015-2018. Score:

FAUSTINO I GRAN RESERVA 1994

DOCa Rioja

TASTING NOTE: Deep, sweet dark-cherry fruit forms

a solid foundation for this impressive wine. There’s

a touch of menthol oak on the nose; plenty of leather

and earth accents in the mouth, coupled with good

acidity, keep the palate complex and lively. Finishes

long, with full – but not harsh – tannins. Editors’

Choice. Score:

IZADI SELECCIÓN RESERVA 2012

DOCa Rioja

TASTING NOTE: The 2012 Selección is obviously a

selection from their best vineyards, mostly Tempranillo

with 20%Graciano aged mostly in French barriques

(75%) for some 16months. This is officially a ‘Reserva’.

The wine is oaky, ripe and concentrated in a style that

would please many. Modern, with plenty of tannins to

be rendered by time in bottle. Very good in its style.

COTNARI GRASA DE COTNARI 2014

DOC Cotnari

The Romanian variety Grasa is capable of producing

dry and semi-sweet styles. A true gem, it is found only

in Romania, and even then there are only approxi-

mately 450 hectares planted. These are ripe, round

wines with suggestions of walnuts, almonds and

apricot. They are notably balanced and vibrant. This

botrytis-affected wine will be ideal with nuts, dried

fruit or blue-veined cheeses.

mineral. Balanced and long, this is perfect for lobster

or a stew featuring scallops, haddock, mussels

and all your favourite seafood. (Vintages panel,
