RHÔNE

ALAIN JAUME CLOS DE SIXTE LIRAC 2015

AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Lirac Clos de Sixte

comes from an appellation that shares a similar

terroir with Chateauneuf du Pape, yet is located just

across the river, on the western side of the Rhone.

It’s a serious, large scaled, voluptuous effort that has

lots of ripe tannin, a [big] mid-palate and copious

amounts of blackberries, black cherries, scorched

earth, licorice and roasted herbs. One of the bigger

boned and concentrated reds in the lineup, it will

have a decade of longevity. Score:

91-93

COURTOIS LA SOURCE

CÔTES DU RHÔNE 2015

AC

TASTING NOTE: ... The 2015 Côtes du Rhône la

Source is a full-bodied, ripe and beautifully fruited

effort. It has fabulous purity, lots of black cherry,

currants, peppery herbs and licorice aromas and

flavors, and full-bodied richness that never comes

across as heavy or cumbersome. Made from 85%

Grenache and 15% Syrah, from a higher elevation

parcel (I’m guessing near Vinsobres), destemmed

and aged in stainless steel, it’s a smoking value!

Score:

91

FERRATON PÈRE & FILS LES CALENDES

CROZES-HERMITAGE 2015

AC

TASTING NOTE: Even better than the La Matiniere

cuvée, the 2015 Crozes Hermitage Les Calendes

(100%Syrah, destemmed and aged in concrete)

offers lots of graphite and minerality, as well as full-

bodied richness, a thick, unctuous texture, present

tannin and a great finish. Again, the value here is about

as good as it gets. At the moment, all of the Crozes

Hermitage releases share a lot of similarities, but I’m

sure they’ll show more singular characters with

additional time in barrel. Score:

92-94

Organic product

CHÂTEAU TOUR DE PEZ 2008

Cru Bourgeois, AC Saint-Estèphe

TASTING NOTE: Relatively soft for a St.-Estèphe,

this nevertheless has plenty of firm tannins to project

the powerful fruit forward. It has structure and

weight, piled with plum juice and acidity. Great aging

potential. Cellar Selection. Score:

92

BEAUJOLAIS

ALBERT BICHOT ROCHE GRANIT

JULIENAS 2015

AC

TASTING NOTE: Wines from the Juliénas cru are

known for their minerality, floral character and tannic

structure. This one also shows dark cherry, plum,

underbrush and a nice touch of spice. Pour with mild

cheeses and smoked ham, or beef-and-winter-

vegetable stew. (Vintages panel, April 2017)

BURGUNDY

LOUIS MAX COTEAUX

BOURGUIGNONS 2015

AC

TASTING NOTE: Red wines from the Coteaux

Bourguignons appellation can be made from four

different grape varieties, or even from blends – a

rarity in Burgundy. This one brings together Pinot

and Gamay and shows tart red cherry and roasted

herbs wrapped in fine tannins. Enjoy it with ratatouille

pie. (Vintages panel, April 2017)
