UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2018

GREECE

– REDWINE

TSANTALI RESERVE RAPSANI 2013

PDO Rapsani, Thessalia

Gold Medal winner at Mundus Vini 2017.

TASTING NOTE: This blend of Xinomavro, Krassato

and Stavroto was hand-picked from vines grown

at altitudes between 250 and 500 metres on the

slopes of Mount Olympus. It offers complex aromas

of blueberry, date, fig, leather, incense and smoke.

On the palate, tangy acidity brings redcurrant and

pomegranate notes on the way to a chewy, lightly

smoky finish. Enjoy the wine now through 2022 with

strong cheeses, or a stew of ground beef or

lamb with eggplant, tomato and roasted garlic.

CAMPANIA

JANARE FIANO 2016

DOP Sannio

(La Guardiense)

TASTING NOTE: This Fiano is one half of Janare’s

“F” series, the other being the Falanghina (another

lesser-known white Italian grape variety that’s well

worth discovering); accordingly, this sports a stylized

letter on the label. The wine itself is crisp and lively,

with white grapefruit, lemon zest and mineral in

abundance. Chill and sip as an aperitif or pair with

seafood. (Vintages panel, May 2017)

SARDINIA

GIOVANU NURAGICO CANNONAU DI

SARDEGNA 2014

DOC

Gold Medal winner at Mundus Vini 2016.

TASTING NOTE: “Cannonau” is the Sardinian name

for the Garnacha (Grenache) grape, which thrives

in warm climates such as Spain, southern France,

Australia and, of course, on the Mediterranean island

of Sardinia. This wine serves up cherry, blackberry,

dried herbs and spices, with a smoky finish. Pour it

tonight with mushroom burgers, or fregola pasta with

mushrooms and herbs. (Vintages panel, Jan. 2017)

CONT’D

RHÔNE

FONCALIEU RÉSERVE DU CROUZAU

ST.-GERVAIS CÔTES DU RHÔNE-

VILLAGES 2012

AP

TASTING NOTE: This award winner offers a

perfumed nose of garrigue, vanilla, spice and ripe

field berries. Nicely balanced and medium-full

bodied, the tasty flavours of raspberry, plum and

black cherry are garnished with spicy peppery notes

while ripe tannins and clean acidity add to the frame

and substance. Weighty on the palate, the wine

is warm, ripe, rich and flavourful, delivering a long

velvety finish. This is versatile at the table and

offers exceptional value. Score:

SOUTHWEST

AYDIE L’ORIGINE MADIRAN 2014

AP

(Famille Laplace)

TASTING NOTE: This wine is already finely balanced,

full of a combination of black fruits and acidity. Behind

this fruitiness there are solid tannins, a dry core and a

concentrated aftertaste where the Tannat shows well.

Drink this ripe, full-bodied wine now. Ranks #59 in

2016

GEORGIA

– REDWINE

TELIANI VALLEY

MEDIUM-SWEET RED 2015

Alazani Valley, Kakheti

Saperavi is the most important and popular Georgian

variety and is the basis for this moderately sweet

wine. Expect plenty of dark cherry and blueberry fruit

enlivened by floral notes, dried herbs and orange

zest. The medium-sweet palate makes this a splendid

after-dinner sipper, but it will also work with duck

in a plum sauce, or with semi-sweet pastries.
