VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula FLAT ROCK CELLARS THE RUSTY SHED CHARDONNAY  2006
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula

After months of postponing the painting of a rusty old shed in the middle of their premier Chardonnay vineyard, the folks at Flat Rock decided to name their top-tier Chardonnay after it. No need to paint it now. This medium full-bodied, barrel-aged Chard features generous aromas of vanilla, pears, apples, tropical fruit and spices. Dry, buttery and full flavoured, it has the elegance and finesse to develop in cellar over the next 3-5 years.

PILLITTERI ESTATES SELECT LATE HARVEST CABERNET  2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: ... Strawberry and raspberry jam greet the olfactories, inviting one to dive in to the glass ... but instead I would suggest taking a sip. Those super sweet smells get reigned in in the mouth, producing a dichotomy of saccharinated strawberry and tart cherry flavours. The wine is balanced between the sweetness and the acidity and is lip-smackingly good, while at the same time proves to be very refreshing. (Michael Pinkus, www.ontariowinereview.com, Dec. 2007)

Clarksburg DRY CREEK VINEYARDS DRY CHENIN BLANC  2007
Clarksburg

Clarksburg, the relatively obscure region near Sacramento, offers terrific wines from under-appreciated varieties. Well worth discovering, this crisp and juicy Chenin Blanc is packed with green apple, citrus and pineapple fruit flavours balanced by vital acidity. Refreshing and very food-friendly, it merits picking up a case to enjoy all summer long.

Napa Valley, Estate Grown GRGICH HILLS CHARDONNAY  2005
Napa Valley, Estate Grown

TASTING NOTE: An interesting blend of toasty components with youthfully tight fruit contributing both energy and unmistakable aromatic limits to the wine at this point in its development. But, development is always the issue with Grgich whites, and this still nascent effort promises to grow over the next three to five years and to follow its predecessors into greater openness with time. For the nonce, it is best served with tangy seafoods. Score - 89. Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines, Sept., 2007)

ROBERT MONDAVI CHARDONNAY  2005
Napa Valley, California

TASTING NOTE: What's so nice about this wine is that it has full-throttle Chard personality while keeping everything so balanced that it's also a versatile food wine. You can't say that about a lot of Chardonnays. Mainly it's the acidity, but also the complex, subtle interplay of fruit and oak. A very nice job. Score - 90. This wine won Gold as well as Best of Class and Best of Varietal honours at the New World Wine Competition 2007. This Napa Valley Savvy has an intense nose featuring ripe melon, pink grapefruit, and the characteristic grassiness that the variety is famous for. It's dry and flavourful with zippy citrus and tropical fruit leading to a crisp finish. It will serve as a refreshing summer sipper but it's even better with grilled fish, summer salads or sushi.

Napa Valley, Estate Grown GRGICH HILLS MERLOT  2004
Napa Valley, Estate Grown

TASTING NOTE: ... a wine with definitive raspberry aromas with minerality and earthiness. There's wonderful balance on a substantial body, which will help the wine age for about eight years. It's an effort that will go a long way toward resuscitating the almost moribund Merlot market. (Alan Goldfarb, www.appellationamerica.com, Feb. 20, 2008)

McLaren Vale, South Australia CHATEAU REYNELLA BASKET PRESSED SHIRAZ  2005
McLaren Vale, South Australia

A great deal of care goes into crafting this deep and smoky Shiraz. The fruit is selected from individual lots of premium McLaren Vale vineyards before they are gently pressed using the traditional, hand-operated basket press. The juice is fermented in small open-top fermenters and the final wine is then aged for 18 months in both French and American oak. Brimming with dark berry aromas as well as notes of tobacco and spice, this plump and rich red makes a terrific match for rare prime rib anytime over the next decade.

Margaret River, Western Australia DEVIL'S LAIR RED  2003
Margaret River, Western Australia

TASTING NOTE: A surprisingly strong effort from a Foster's label that's languished a bit in recent years, this is an intense, moderately ageworthy red that's two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. AC, 1er Cru

The 2006 [red Burgundies] are generally riper and fleshier than the 2004s, and at least at the level of quality of the underrated 2001s. I suspect that long-time Burgundy collectors will love the better 2006s, and many of these wines will give great pleasure while you're waiting for the more powerful 2005s to reach full maturity. As a general rule, the village wines in 2006 will be at their best between 3 and 10 years after the harvest, the premier crus 5 to 15 and the grand crus 8 to 20. CHÂTEAU PECH-LATT CORBIÈRES  2006
AC

Pech-Latt farms organically, which doesn't necessarily mean guaranteed quality, but organic growers rightly claim it's also a whole way of life. This philosophy, accompanied by fussy attention in the vineyard, can produce superb grapes. No synthetic pesticides or fertilisers are used ... The idea is to foster biodiversity in soil and vineyard and hence naturally healthy vines. (Richard James, www.winewriting.com)

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Calvaire has a dark ruby color, more fruit saturation, the same aromatic and flavor profile, but with more intensely sweet kirsch, lavender, and roasted herbs as well as some underbrush and soil nuances. It has excellent texture, medium to full body, and a long, lush finish. Score - 89-91. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007)

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape offers a very aromatic display of white chocolate, black cherry, roasted herbs, pepper, and espresso. The wine has excellent concentration, lush tannins for the vintage, and a round, opulent mouthfeel. It is almost atypical for a 2005 in its fullness and headiness. Certainly the tannins have melted effectively over the last year. Drink it over the next 12-15 years. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007)

MAZZIOTTI EST! EST!! EST!!! DI MONTEFIASCONE  2006
DOC

In the 12th century, a German bishop sent his scout ahead to find an inn that served quality wines. The scout tried several, writing Est! (Latin for 'it is') on the door when he found a good one. At the inn at Montefiascone, the scout was so enthusiastic he wrote Est! Est!! Est!!! on that door. Presumably, that's where the bishop stayed. Today, the wines, made with Trebbiano and Malvasia, are appley, bright and gently aromatic. They are said to be excellent partners for such Roman specialities as fritto misto (fried mixed meat and vegetables) and carciofi alla giudea (deep-fried artichoke).

TASTING NOTE: I tasted one of the best pinot grigios I've come across recently. The grape ... reaches its zenith in Italy's northeast ... That's where Bortoluzzi produces its outstanding wine in the Venezia Giulia area. The 2006 Pinot Grigio ... is at once crisp and rich, with green apple, herb and mineral notes. TASTING NOTE: The estate's 2004 Guidalberto (45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Sangiovese) beautifully captures the pedigree of its superior vintage.
