SOUTHBROOK TRIOMPHE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2007
VQA Niagara Peninsula
TASTING NOTE: Look for classic sauvignon blanc flavours and texture here. It's almost a textbook example of the style that many people prefer, with intense but not over-the-top flavours (none of the "sweaty" notes here) and a broad dimension of crisp, refreshing acidity. It's ideal for the usual gastronomic suspects, like oysters and goat cheese, and it will complement any white fish, seafood and shellfish.

COYOTE'S RUN BLACK PAW VINEYARD CABERNET FRANC 2007
VQA Four Mile Creek, Niagara Peninsula
TASTING NOTE: This is a gutsy Cab Franc with age on its side. The heavy dark clay soil and 14 months in oak contribute to its density and charm. There are aromas and flavours galore - ripe dark berry fruit, anise, spiced black plum and herbal notes among them. It's medium to full bodied with perceptible grainy tannin and a lingering finish. Drink 2011 to 2014 or pour now with a strip loin grilled medium rare.

HENRY OF PELHAM RESERVE CABERNET/MERLOT 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula
Henry of Pelham's Cabernet/Merlot Reserve 2006 is a Meritage by any other name. Pelham only makes this wine in the best of vintages, and 2006 has turned out to be extremely successful for Bordeaux blends in Ontario. The wine uses Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, plus Merlot. Prior to blending, the grapes are given extended skin contact in stainless steel and then aged in French and American barriques (40% new) for 18 months. Expect aromas of cassis, cherry, smoke and earth tones. A worthy candidate for short-term cellaring (2-4 years), this wine will also complement roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic.

LE CLOS JORDANNE CLAYSTONE TERRACE PINOT NOIR 2007
VQA Niagara Peninsula, Twenty Mile Bench
Le Clos Jordanne winemaker Thomas Bachelder has helped take Ontario wines to the next level with his terroir-driven Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. He was honoured as 2009's Winemaker of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards. Now in just their third vintage, his single-vineyard wines are a revelation. The deeply coloured Claystone Terrace Pinot is typically the most muscular in style, a trait Bachelder attributes to the rich clay soil. The 2007 vintage is being hailed as the best ever in Ontario, so this intense Pinot from the master himself should hit the quality stratosphere and be eminently age-worthy.

STONECHURCH RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007

TASTING NOTE: Deep ruby in colour with some youthful purple highlights, this Cab displays fairly intense fruity aromas of cassis, black plum and raspberry along with notes of cedar and forest floor. It's dry, medium-bodied with vibrant acidity balancing the ripe black-fruit flavours. Subtle note of leather adds interest, and the long finish is most impressive. VQA Wine of the Month
WILDASS RED 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula
TASTING NOTE: The cooler prevailing conditions in 2006 allowed for the production of an aromatic lighter style, herbal, fresh red currant and cranberry-scented Wildass red. Acids are crisp and tart, like fresh sour cherries, tannins are very light and dusty and the flavours linger surprisingly on for such a delicate style. Don't expect fatness and lushness, but this will suit fans of lighter style, highly drinkable reds best served with a slight chill. Highly drinkable, classic Old World-style food wine. If you prefer a little more polish, hang on to this for another year.

ROUND HILL CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007
California
Quarterly Review of Wines, in their Summer 2009 issue, listed Round Hill's 2007 Cabernet as one of their Best of the Best California Values and made these general remarks about this estate's wines: " ... solid, balanced, tasty bistro and everyday wines that marry well with food. They exhibit rounded fruit, with soft spice and some oak. In judging wine, we favor finish, and the wines below offer a smooth, fairly full and satisfying one. These wines offer easy flavors upfront and invite a second glass, one of the best recommendations any value wine can receive. The prices are right. TASTING NOTE: Showing lovely fresh aromas of apples, floral, spiced pear and honey, this delicious Pinot Gris is just off-dry, richly textured on the mid-palate and balanced by supportive acidity. It's well-structured, with more than a hint of minerality on the zesty finish. This would pair nicely with a baked glazed ham, or roast turkey.

COLLINA DEI LECCI ROSSO DI MONTALCINO 2007
DOC
(Famiglia Pacini)
Rosso di Montalcino has been dubbed "baby Brunello", and rightly so. The Sangiovese wines, usually from younger vines, require only one year in barrel and bottle before release. This allows the wines to be much more soft textured, ripe and fruity than the complex, longer-aged bigger brother Brunello. Even with the shorter cellaring, it retains a full measure of elegance, and is a winner with food – particularly wild mushroom risotto.

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Sassicaia may very well go down as one of the all-time great recent vintages for this Tuscan thoroughbred. The year started off very warm but by August evening temperatures had moderated, leaving the fruit with a stunning combination of ripeness, perfume, acidity and tannin.
