VQA Niagara Peninsula VQA Wine of the Month
COYOTE'S RUN RESERVE CHARDONNAY  2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: This is a meticulously made wine deserving of your attention. Stunning aromatics drift off the glass of this medium-bodied, well-balanced Chard - spice (nutmeg and cloves) plus toasty notes and vanilla. The flavours are quite focused - apple and pear - while the texture is almost creamy and honeyed, yet the wine is dry and zingy. It finishes fruit forward, clean and refreshing. Pair it with herbed roast chicken. Score - starstarstarstar 1/2 (out of 5).

VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Estate Btld. FEATHERSTONE GEWÜRZTRAMINER  2007
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Estate Btld.

TASTING NOTE: Floral and spicy with lots of rose petal on both the nose and in the mouth. The awesome nose reels you in and the only way to deal with it is to just sip away while you're sniffing. In the mouth, there's the typical oily texture that is common to Gewurztraminer, but it really only becomes apparent if you keep it in your mouth for an extended stay - otherwise it glides smoothly through ... there's also just the right amount of sweetness in here. Beauty. (Michael Pinkus, www.ontariowinereview.com, Feb. 18, 2008)

Fielding's Gewürztraminer is bursting with spicy aromas of clove and nutmeg as well as orange marmalade, peach and lychee. TAWSE SKETCHES OF NIAGARA RIESLING  2007
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Tawse produced four Rieslings from the 2007 vintage, ranging from the light and uncomplicated Sketches of Niagara Riesling to drier, more considerable Wismer Vineyard Riesling to the analytical and complex Carly's Block Riesling. As enjoyable and effortless as the Sketches of Niagara Riesling may seem, co-winemaker Paul Pender explains it was the toughest of the trio to make. "There was a lot of work to arrive at that." ... The slightly off-dry, sweet-and-sour-tinged white was knit together with fruit from four different vineyards to produce a wine with appealing fresh fruit (a mix of tropical, lime and grapefruit notes) that's perfectly in tune with the change in season.

VINELAND ESTATES SAUVIGNON BLANC  2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Part of the four 2006 Sauvignon Blanc series currently available at Vineland ... this base model sources its fruit from the Vineland Estate in Beamsville, and is all stainless steel fermented and aged. It has all the typicity of flavours and smells you'd expect from Sauvignon Blanc. A nose rich in grassy and citrus - including a touch of lemon rind ... the flavours follow suit with a grassy-lemony crispness that keeps you swallowing for what seems like days afterward ... that's the effect of good acidity ... this really is a summertime Sauv. TASTING NOTE: The Red Paw has a nose of cranberry, sour cherry, and a variety of red fruits with a subtle earthiness. In the mouth, cherries and vanilla lead the charge, while a little bit of the earth creeps in, with a hint of tannins enroute to a finish that is smooth and tasty. MEGALOMANIAC SONOFABITCH PINOT NOIR  2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula
(John Howard Cellars of Distinction)

Pinot Noir is often referred to as the 'heartbreak grape', a nickname that romantically alludes to the delicate and difficult nature of growing this tricky variety. John Howard cuts to the chase with the cheekily (and perhaps more accurately) named Sonofabitch Pinot Noir. This SOB features lifted aromas of cherry, woodspice and vanilla. It's dry, medium-bodied with a supple texture and a good balance of cherry, raspberry and cranberry flavours as well as cedar and spice notes.

TASTING NOTE: The grapes got real ripe, to judge by the bright burst of yellow apricots and exotic passionfruits. At the same time, acidity is crisp and citrusy, and there's a pleasant yeasty character, like Champagne, or a nice fino Sherry. The wine finishes totally dry, leaving a palate impression of great elegance. Drink now through 2010. Score - 90. (Steve Heimoff, Wine Enthusiast, Aug. 1, 2007)

MONTEVINA TERRA D'ORO SHR FIELD BLEND ZINFANDEL  2005
Amador County

The folks at Montevina coined the word 'stellar-ness' to describe their pursuit of the exceptional. This deep and delicious red certainly displays this individual quality. Comprised of 80% Zinfandel, 13% Petite Sirah and 7% Barbera, this unique 'field blend' is grown and picked together from the same vineyard and arrives at the winery already mixed. The grapes are then crushed and fermented together, rather than blending seperately-made wines later. The result is a brilliant example of the quality coming out of Amador County, with blackberry, cherry, fig and peppery spice characteristics. Enjoy with herb-crusted leg of lamb.

Napa Valley PARADUXX  2005
Napa Valley
(Duckhorn Wine Co.)

TASTING NOTE: 60% Zinfandel; 32% Cabernet Sauvignon; 6% Merlot; 2% Cabernet Franc. Other varietals may add their voices to this very rich wine, and Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, brings a firm streak of tannin, but the wine is very much Zinfandel at its heart and is rife with very deep blackberry fruit and vanilla. Full and fleshy in feel, if still a bit astringent on the back end, it is beginning to hint at complexity to come and deserves to be left alone for some three or four more years. Score - 91. (Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines, May 2008)

TASTING NOTE: Other wineries come and go. Raymond remains, offering solid Napa Valley Cab at a fair price. The '05 Reserve calls to mind the very fine 2000, but actually costs less. It's a dry, elegantly structured wine, rich in sweet fine tannins, and offering up complex, delicious flavors of freshly picked ripe blackberries, spicy cassis, baked cherry pie and smoky oak. Drink now through 2015. Editor's Choice. Score - 93. (Steve Heimoff, Wine Enthusiast, June 1, 2008)

Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Clos de los Siete is a slightly different blend with 50% Malbec, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Syrah. Opaque purple-colored, it has a similar expressive nose including fragrant plum, blueberry, and black cherry. Ripe, sweet, and seamless, it admirably hides its tannin under all the fruit. It will evolve for several years but who will have the willpower to defer gratification? It is an awesome value. Score - 92. (Jay Miller, www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2007)

AC, SUR LIE

For several centuries, the Gildas Cormerais family have been producing Muscadet in the very core of this Loire sub-region. They are at heart traditionalists, using long-established growing and production methods. By leaving the just-finished wine on its lees for several months following fermentation, it absorbs a small amount of carbon dioxide; not enough to create an obvious 'fizz', but sufficient enough to give the tip of the tongue a light tingle. This helps to lift the crisp, fresh fruitiness in the wine, which in turn makes it a favourite with seafood or bouillabaisse.

Rosé's greatest appeal is its almost limitless flexibility with food. These wines have a natural affinity for the foods of spring and summer, and they can also work well with many dishes that are murder on red wines, especially ones in which vinegar plays a leading role. They can also work with dishes that are too serious or hearty for most white wines. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, Web Only, June 2008)

QbA Rheingau, Estate Bottled SCHLOSS SCHÖNBORN RIESLING  1994
QbA Rheingau, Estate Bottled

As with many older Rieslings, this QbA from Schönborn is drier than it would have been in its youth. It is still a terrific value with dried lemon, peach and lanolin aromas and flavours. The acids are still quite fresh, yet perfectly in balance with the fruit. A remarkable value for a maturing Riesling. It will still reward more time in a cellar (2-4 years), but is an excellent companion tonight with grilled salmon.

DOCG FONTANAFREDDA GAVI DEL COMUNE DI GAVI  2006
DOCG

Gavi is the home of the Cortese grape. Other regions in Piedmont and northern Italy also grow it, but 'nobody does it better' (not even James Bond!). At its best, as in this version, Cortese can be both fruity and aromatic while displaying a citrus tang and a mineral note. A terrific match for pan-fried freshwater fish or grilled chicken breast with roasted red peppers.

DOCG RENZO MASI CHIANTI RISERVA  2004
DOCG

This Chianti Riserva is a blend of 93% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 2% Colorino. Rufina ages it for 30 months in a combination of barrel and bottle before release. Canaiolo adds some acidity, while the Colorino, instead of the now-allowed Cabernet Sauvignon, is used by traditionalists who want to add tannic structure but keep the wine 'all Italian'. Try this with classic Tuscan dishes, such as Steak Florentine.

DOC SANTA MARIA MORELLINO DI SCANSANO  2006
DOC
(Marchesi di Frescobaldi)

Morellino di Scansano was one of the first DOCs in the Maremma coastal zone of Tuscany. They proved that grapes could thrive in this rather swampy land. Producers such as San Guido, makers of Sassacaia, followed the lead to create great wines here. Morellino di Scansano may not be comparable to that rarified example, but the DOC's producers are known for producing quality value-priced wines from Sangiovese and, in this case, a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon. Match this one to grilled gourmet sausages.

Ripasso means the addition of grape skins used to make Amarone to the already fermented Valpolicella wine, thereby causing a second fermentation. As a result, the aroma and flavour profiles deepen. In this version, the aromas are reminiscent of chocolate-covered raisin, leather, vanilla and red table grapes. This dry wine is actually quite fruity and round in the mouth.
