VQA Niagara Peninsula FIELDING PINOT GRIS  2007
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: This one's a pure sipper with a hint of sweetness and it's fruity peach and pear nose gives way to even more pleasing mature peach and mango flavours in the mouth. Sure it has a short finish, but that just gives you more reason to go back to the well (so to speak) for another sip, or better yet glassful. ... LAILEY RIESLING  2007
VQA Niagara River

TASTING NOTE: ... This 2007 is truly outstanding - everything you drink Riesling for and a whole lot more. When you first get it to your nose, you'll smell anise and fennel that floats around in and amongst the usual peach, floral and a bit of orangyness. Then you put it to your lips and into the mouth it goes: apples pop, lime zings, white peach coats and it finishes with a crisp, clean acidity that gets the mouth watering in anticipation for another sip. There's also a faint hint of sweetness ... beautiful; and with a lifespan of about 10 years, you'll be able to enjoy this one for a good long time ... VQA Niagara Lakeshore STREWN PINOT BLANC  2007
VQA Niagara Lakeshore

Pinot Blanc is relatively rare in Ontario, and Strewn has become the leading force for this grape in the province. This oak-aged wine features attractive smoky notes underpinned by peach and vanilla. Medium bodied, it is more expressive and flavourful than many Pinot Blancs. A good alternative to Chardonnay, match it to grilled prawns or other seafoods.

LAILEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2005
VQA Niagara River

TASTING NOTE: ... Sourcing fruit specifically from its carefully attended Niagara-on-the-Lake estate vineyard, Lailey Vineyard consistently avoids [underripe grapes], even in the most challenging years. The newly released 2005 Cabernet offers an appealing mix of plum, blueberry and red fruit flavours in its medium-bodied, food-friendly package. This is definitively cool climate Cabernet, with refreshing acidity and savoury spice accents, but it's cool climate in the best sense. This is polished, elegant and refined; a red wine with grip and persistence and intensity. Score - (out of 5). (Christopher Waters, www.watersandwine.com, Dec.12, 2007)

Russian River Valley New at VINTAGES
DRY CREEK VINEYARD CHARDONNAY  2006
Russian River Valley

From their very first vintage in 1972, Chardonnay has contributed enormously to the success of Dry Creek Vineyard. Since 2003 the fruit has been sourced strictly from the Russian River Valley, where the foggy mornings and cool afternoon breezes are ideal for developing the intense flavours and balancing acidity of this wine. It's complex, with a core of peach, apple and tropical fruit as well as a balanced note of light cedary oak.

Sonoma County FERRARI-CARANO FUMÉ BLANC  2006
Sonoma County

TASTING NOTE: ... Has a fine balance and a real European elegance about it. The nose when I tried the wine was a little tight, but patience brought me peach, rose, mandarin orange and honey, a fragrant combination indeed. It was on the palate that the wine revealed its true Sauvignon Blanc wealth. The wine is dry, with a mid-level of acidity. The primary flavor notes were mandarin orange, lime, a little flint, tangerine, and a deep aura of rose. A number of tropical fruit flavor notes poke out from beneath these primary flavors: melon, pineapple and even a touch of banana. All the notes are ripe and warm. ... The finish is long, with the wine's acidity nicely tamed; the rose and tangerine form the final notes... (Elliot Essman, www.stylegourmet.com, 2007)

Ripe, oaky and brimming with melony fruit, but still showing a keen edge of herbs that brings it the convincing stamp of well-made Sauvignon Blanc, this well-filled wine offers an inviting take on the grape. It is rounded and creamy without erring to softness, and it stays both rich and focused through to a lengthy, properly firm finish. Score - 90. (Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines, March 2008)

Napa Valley FRANCISCAN MERLOT  2004
Napa Valley

Franciscan's Merlot is sourced from the cooler half of Napa Valley, including the winery's estate in the heart of the Oakville District and south to vineyards in Carneros. It's believed these cooler vineyards give more vibrant flavours and denser structure to the wine. This Merlot features plenty of red-fruit aromas and flavours, and on the palate, the ripe fruit flavours are nicely balanced by fresh acidity and ripe tannins. Enjoy with grilled lamb chops.

This Shiraz offers bountiful black cherry flavours with nicely integrated notes of cocoa and cedar. Excellent with red meats or spicy pastas.

Fronteira RS New at VINTAGES
MIOLO FORTALEZA DO SEIVAL PINOT NOIR  2007
Fronteira RS

Extreme care is taken with the fruit selection for this Pinot Noir. The fruit is hand-picked and then a rigorous table sort is conducted to select the best fruit. To evenly extract the colour and flavours from the fruit, the wine goes through a cool maceration and is then drained off into barrels using only gravity. The resulting wine displays exceptional varietal character of sour cherry, beetroot, plum and raspberry. Fresh and fruity, this is a good choice for grilled salmon and salsa.

LEYDA CLASSIC RESERVE CARMENÈRE  2006

Leyda's Classic Reserve Carmenère comes from specific vineyards in higher elevation areas of Rapel Valley. For the grapes, higher elevation means the intense heat of the day is balanced by cool temperatures at night, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and achieve balance. Featuring aromas of plum, cedar, vanilla and smoke, this Carmenère is an excellent choice for grilled steak or even liver and onions.

TASTING NOTE: Sourced from five locations and under-going 10% barrel fermentation, the 2007 Marlborough Pinot Gris is perhaps just a little anodyne on the nose with faint scents of apricot and green apple, but the palate more than compensates with cut grass, dried apricot and a touch of kerosene. This is the kind of Pinot Gris that creeps up on you. Score - 88. (Neal Martin, www.erobertparker.com, April 2008)

Marlborough, South Island DELTA VINEYARD PINOT NOIR  2007
Marlborough, South Island

For a long time, winemaker/consultant Matt Thomson had been searching for a suitable site in Marlborough to start his joint-venture with David Gleave MW and when he finally discovered a triangular-shaped hill to the west of Blenheim in 2000, the dream turned reality. The regular Pinot Noir comes from the flat section of the vineyard, Hatters Hill from an elevation that rises to 175m. (Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate, April 2008)

TASTING NOTE: The 2007 Pinot Noir is much better, quite a high extraction on the nose with dark cherry and plum with a touch of mulberry, the palate soft and supple with a plush finish tinged with white pepper. Score - 90. (Neal Martin, www.erobertparker.com, April 2008)

Harvested at 23-24 brix and oak-aged for a year (10 per cent new), it is full-coloured with smooth, ripe cherry, spice and herb flavours showing good depth. Drink now onwards. Score - (out of 5). Hawkes Bay, North Island SILENI CELLAR SELECTION PINOT NOIR  2007
Hawkes Bay, North Island

TASTING NOTE: The 2007 vintage works well as a drink-young style. On the market within six months of the harvest, it's basically a Beaujolais-style red, made with 'minimal' oak handling. Full-bodied, ripe and supple, with plenty of plummy, spicy, slightly earthy flavour, it should be at its best during 2008.

AC Médoc CHÂTEAU LE BOURDIEU  2003
AC Médoc
(G. Bailly, Prop.)

TASTING NOTE: ... Savvy Bordeaux shoppers often chose Cru Bourgeois wines rather than the ultra-expensive Grand Cru wines in great vintages. The 2003 Bordeaux listings fall squarely into the "high quality at a reasonable price" category. The first one I've tried, Chateau Le Bourdieu 2003 is a 50-50 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend that has the elegance and structure you expect from good Bordeaux. A bit of oak shows through the core of ripe fruit and the wine finishes with noticeable tannin but it's already beginning to hint at the tobacco and cedar qualities that Bordeaux-lovers crave. A couple of years of bottle age should bring this classy wine together nicely ... (C.J. Katz, www.savourlife.ca, Oct. 1-5, 2007)

AC

This wine comes from a small domaine (20 ha) now run by the brothers Jacques and Jean-Louis Pradelle. They produce only 8500 cases a year of beautifully crafted, deeply coloured, rich Syrahs. To add layers of flavour, they mature the wines for nine months in a combination of new and seasoned French barriques. From the great 2005 vintage, this wine displays aromas of cherry, plum, leather and smoke, with a soft, well-balanced finish. Enjoy with grilled steaks.

OENOFOROS ASPROLITHI RODITIS  2007
AO Patras

Roditis is an indigenous Greek grape that is known for keeping its acid levels while at the same time achieving complete ripeness. The best versions, such as this one grown at 800 metres, are made with fruit from vineyards located at high altitudes. Oenoforos improves their product further by drastically reducing yields, thereby heightening the wine's intensity and concentration. Terrific with moussaka.

BARBI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO  2001
DOCG

Wine Spectator and International Wine Cellar also awarded this wine a
score of 90.

TASTING NOTE: The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino, a dark ruby, displays a perfumed nose along with dark fruit and scorched earth nuances on a structured, long frame supported by building tannins. Made in a style that is at once delicate and powerful, today it comes across as backward and austere in its expression. As it sits in the glass it continues to put on considerable weight, but ideally several years of cellaring are called for. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. Score - 90.
