ARMAND DE BRIGNAC BRUT ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE
AC

310441 (D) 750mL $499.95

TASTING NOTE: The second cuvée launched approximately three years after the Gold bottle. Fifteen percent of red wines form Cattier's own vineyard in Montagne de Reims is added to the final blend. This trio blend is made from the 2009, 2010 and 2012 with 50% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier and 10% Chardonnay. Abundance of dark fruit with notes of blackcherry and blackcurrant. While full bodied, it is fresh, pure and vibrant with some delicate red fruit profiles. The tangy acidity is keeping the wine energised and fresh. Like the Gold Brut, it feels much drier than 8.5g/l of dosage. Score: 93 (Christelle Guibert, decanter.com, Nov. 24, 2016)

MOLLYDOOKER BLUE EYED BOY SHIRAZ 2014
McLaren Vale, South Australia

327379 (XD) 750mL $54.95

TASTING NOTE: Starts off with a plush mix of dried cherry, blueberry and mocha flavors, building momentum just as the tannins gain traction. Finishes with a mouthful of velvety spice, cedar, smoke and black tea details. Drink now through 2030. Score: 93 (MaryAnn Worobiec, winespectator.com, May 31, 2016)

MARCHAND-TAWSE CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2013
AC

487363 (XD) 750mL $42.95

Like all of the impressive, terrroir-driven red wines from this dynamic duo, this will be an earthy and complex wine with impressive authenticity and drive. Look for red and dark fruit and a long, savoury finish.

ROTEM & MOUNIR SAOUMA INOPIA 2014
AC Côtes du Rhône-Villages

493866 (XD) 750mL $34.95

After first establishing themselves as winemakers and negociants in Beaune, Burgundy, Rotem & Mounir Saouma then set their sights on the Rhône. Beginning with a property in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, they began to explore and experiment with Grenache. Their first Châteauneuf wine was released in 2009. Their wines are defined by their fearlessness as they strive to coax the very best from their soils. This one is mostly Grenache with Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault and Counoise. This will be a refined and impressive wine. Enjoy with lamb.

BUON TEMPO ALTA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2010
DOCG

483784 (XD) 750mL $69.95

TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Alta sees 24 months of tonneaux, with 50% new wood. That added oak component gives the wine a dark, brooding personality and thicker concentration. Ultimately the bouquet is cleaner in the Alta expression (compared to the base Brunello) and the dried fruit tones of dark berry and cassis have more resonance. Spicy notes of Spanish cedar and cinnamon fill in the rear. Of the estate's two releases, this is the superior wine. Drink Date: 2016-2028. Score: 92 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Feb. 27, 2015)

FATTORIA DI BASCIANO I PINI 2013
IGT Rosso dei Colli della Toscana Centrale

412627 (D) 750mL $33.95

TASTING NOTE: Lovely aromas of violet, black currant and blackberry highlight this elegant, supple red. Vibrant and virtually seamless, though this should improve as the components integrate. Spice and mineral accents add depth and line the finish. Shows more finesse than power. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Best from 2018 through 2030. Score: 94 (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, Oct. 31, 2015)

SAÓ EXPRESSIU 2009
DO Costers del Segre

482489 (XD) 750mL $28.95

TASTING NOTE: Subtle, rooty, expressive aromas of blackberry, raisin and tobacco are heady and pure, with magnetic pull. A full-bodied palate is loaded with ripe berry fruit and baked, peppery, spicy blackberry flavors that end long and sturdy, with integrated oak and balance between ripe berry and even riper black currant flavors. Drink through 2021. Score: 92 (Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast, June 2015)

URBINA SELECCIÓN 1999
DOCa Rioja

482158 (XD) 750mL $29.95

TASTING NOTE: Alluring, oxidative, old-school style. Remarkably aromatic, opening up on the palate with nicely knit tannins, relevant fruitiness and a long finish. Impossible to believe it is 15 years old. This is what Rioja can do! Drink:2015-2025. Highly recommended. Score: 94 (decanter.com, Aug. 18, 2015)

RÉSONANCE PINOT NOIR 2013
Résonance Vineyard, Yamhill-Carlton

467696 (XD) 750mL $90.00

TASTING NOTE: The eagerly anticipated first release from Maison Louis Jadot's Oregon project does not disappoint. Long time Jadot winemaker Jacques Lardière has put all his heart and expertise into this wine, sourced from a much-loved vineyard recently acquired by the firm. Concentrated raspberry purée comes through in both aroma and flavor, with laser focus. It's a magical combination of finesse, silkiness and strident youth, with 20 years of aging potential. Drink now through 2035. Cellar Selection. Score: 94 (Paul Gregutt, Wine Enthusiast, April 2016)

ARMAND DE BRIGNAC ACE OF SPADES BRUT GOLD CHAMPAGNE
AOC

438820 (XD) 1500mL $649.95

TASTING NOTE: A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, this ripe, well-balanced wine has some toast that adds complexity and richness to the apple and lemon fruit, indicating a mature bottling. The wine in a gold-foil bottle is one of five made by the Cattier house for rapper and entrepreneur Jay Z's Armand de Brignac Empire brand with the "Ace of Spades" logo. Score: 91 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 2016)

LA STAFFA RINCROCCA VERDICCHIO DEI CASTELLI DI JESI CLASSICO SUPERIORE 2013
DOC

478206 (XD) 750mL $28.95

TASTING NOTE: From an organic estate, this has pure, fresh aromas of green melon and pear. Delicate herbal and vegetal hints add complexity. Wonderful lift, with lots of concentration and a long, fine finish. Enjoyable now but probably much more to give in time. Drink: 2016-2023. Score: 96 (Simon Woolf, decanter.com, May 2016)

BOLLINGER BRUT ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE
AC

100503 (D) 750mL $103.95

TASTING NOTE: This marries a dash (5%) of still red wine from the Bollinger vineyards with the house's stalwart, complex non-vintage cuvée to fine effect. It has playful red florals and citrus fruits on the nose with freshly grilled hazelnuts, wild berries and spiced-berry biscuits. Actually, it smells superb! The palate offers plenty of concentrated red-apple and bright light-cherry fruit flavors amid a balanced and lively frame. A Champagne that finishes smooth and fresh. Brilliant take on a fresher style. Drink now. Score: 94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Oct. 7, 2016)

BRIMONCOURT BRUT RÉGENCE CHAMPAGNE
AC

478776 (XD) 750mL $57.95

TASTING NOTE: Very fine and elegant, with deep layers of flavour and texture, this savoury and near-dry Champagne has a creamy, waxy bouquet whose scents of floral notes, citrus oil and brioche reveal undertones of mushrooms and honey. It's long and shapely, with a round, nutty core of flavour that extends long and lively towards a focused and persistent finish of freshness, shape and harmony. Drink 2017-2020+. Score: 96 (Jeremy Oliver, jeremyoliver.com.au, March 20, 2016)

QUINTA DA ROMANEIRA VINTAGE PORT 2004
DOP

36228 (S) 750mL $46.95

TASTING NOTE: This is not a declared vintage but one that has produced a fine and structured wine that is dark and dense and seriously firm. It is just turning from Millennial to Gen X and has begun to develop secondary flavors that give it weight and a rounder character. The wine is of course ready, although it will remain like this for many years. Cellar Selection. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 1, 2016)

BENCH 1775 MERLOT 2014
BC VQA Okanagan Valley

489203 (XD) 750mL $35.95

TASTING NOTE: This is a rich and spicy Merlot offering toast, coffee and vanilla notes atop the dark fruit tones. Big and age-worthy, this has great intensity and a fine acidity bringing great balance. (VINTAGES panel, April 2016)

CLOSSON CHASE CLOSSON CHASE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR 2014
VQA Prince Edward County

145888 (XD) 750mL $29.95

TASTING NOTE: As noted in my review for the Closson Chase Churchside Vineyard pinot, it's great to see site specificity emerging with greater clarity with each passing vintage, and despite a winemaker change. Although the latest releases from Closson Chase under Keith Tyers are tighter, brighter and less oxidative overall than those from the Debra Paskus era, it seems that Prince Edward County terroir in general, and Closson's two parcels on either side of Closson road, have the last word on wine profile. The Closson Chase Vineyard pinot is consistently more open and high-toned, and perfumed with typical tart cran-cherry county fruit and delicate floral aromatics. 2014 has yielded a lithe, sinewy, energetic pinot, very fine grained but with deceptive power and surprising length on the palate considering the modest 12.5% alcohol - the magic of PEC. A really lovely, elegant expression, and nicely priced, too. Drink or hold this another 3-4 years. Score: 90 (John Szabo, MS, winealign.com, Sept. 2, 2016)

BALBAS GRAN RESERVA 2006
DO Ribera del Duero

85373 (XD) 750mL $61.00

TASTING NOTE: Tar and sanguine notes frame the plum, licorice and mineral flavors in this savory red, which has good density, with firm tannins and balsamic acidity providing solid structure. Spice and smoke details linger on the finish. Drink now through 2024. Score: 92 (Thomas Matthews, winespectator.com, Oct. 15, 2014)

TASTING NOTE: 80% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 10% Garnacha. A bold and complex nose with toast and oak dominating. LAN D-12 2013
DOCa Rioja

431890 (D) 750mL $29.95

The name of this wine, D-12, is a reference to the stainless steel tank that holds those wines that have - according to LAN winery personnel - the most outstanding attributes for a particular year. Keeping on the "12" theme, the wine is aged 12 months in new American and French oak barrels followed by 12 months of rounding in the bottle prior to release. It's made from Tempranillo with a dash of Mazuelo (Carignan). Expect earthy red-fruit flavours with gentle spice and vanilla shading, and pair with mutton chops or grilled sausages.

LEALTANZA SELECCIÓN DE FAMILIA RESERVA 2009
DOCa Rioja

472704 (XD) 750mL $29.95

Smoky and appealingly sweet in the mouth, offering concentrated blackberry and cherry-vanilla flavors braced by gentle acidity and a spicy nuance. Closes with smooth tannins, excellent focus and a suave, lingering spicecake quality. Drinking window: 2019-2026. Score: 92 (Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, Oct. 2015)

743310 (XD) 750mL $57.95

This wine was also awarded 96 points by Luis Gutiérrez on robertparker.com (Aug. 30, 2016).

TASTING NOTE: Gorgeous aromas of ripe fruit, Spanish cedar and dark chocolate. Full body with beautiful flavors of fresh strawberries and raspberries. Super polished and refined. Lovely tension. Refined and polished. A wine with superb depth. Always a masterpiece. Better in 2018 but a joy to taste now. Score: 97 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Oct. 20, 2016)

VIÑA SALCEDA RESERVA 2011
DOCa Rioja

944801 (XD) 750mL $24.95

TASTING NOTE: Complex notions of woodsmoke, raspberry, red cherry, black olive and allspice. The wine is serious, structured and firm enough to cellar 5+ years, although it's drinking beautifully now. Pair with charcuterie and smoked cheeses, or grilled meats. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2017)

369082 (XD) 750mL $26.95

TASTING NOTE: In Spain, bubbly is called cava, and in Germany, sekt. Cava is always fine value. However, in this release is the most amazing sekt I have every sipped, Reinhartshausen riesling Brut Deutscher Sekt with toasty peach, pear, lime, kiwi fruit and cherry blossom accents. It's fun, fruity and lively. Score: 91 (Gordon Stimmell, thestar.com, April 25, 2014)

CHÂTEAU DE NAGES JT WHITE 2013
Costières de Nîmes

485854 (XD) 750mL $25.95

TASTING NOTE: The top white of the estate, the 2013 Costières de Nîmes Cuvee Joseph Torres is drop dead gorgeous, and at the price, shockingly good. A blend of 80% Roussanne and 20% Viognier that was barrel fermented and aged 8 months on lees, it boasts rock star notes of apple tart, sautéed nuts, honeysuckle and crème in its medium to full-bodied, pure, crisp yet textured style. But it by the case and drink it over the coming year or three. Drink Date: 2014-2017. Score: 93 (Jeb Dunnuck, robertparker.com, Jan. 1, 2015)
