WINES OF THE MONTH - MARCH 6, 2010

Wine of the Month

MONTES ALPHA CARMENÉRE 2007
Colchagua Valley, Apalta Vineyard, Chile
143230 (D) 750 mL $19.95

TASTING NOTE: The 2007 Alpha Carmenère is a superb rendition of this fascinating grape variety. A saturated purple in color, it has a superb aromatic array of spice, lavender, incense, smoke, and blueberry. Layered, plush, and concentrated, it has excellent depth and grip, enough well-hidden structure to evolve for several years, and a long, fruit filled finish. Drink it from 2012 to 2020. Score – 91. CHÂTEAU DE FONTENELLES CUVÉE RENAISSANCE 2006
AC Corbières, Midi, France
148692 (XD) 750 mL $19.95

Winner of a Gold Medal at the 2008 Concours des Grands Vins de France.

TASTING NOTE: An award-winning wine for good reason. Bold blackcurrant, violets, smoke and plum aromas dominate this well-made red. Dry, with lush fruit surrounded by elegant tannins and sweet oak tones. Medium-full bodied with a substantial finish. Try with braised beef short ribs and root vegetable ragout. It will also reward short-term cellaring (2-4 years). (VINTAGES panel, July 2009)

Wine of the Month

Niagara Choice

CATTAIL CREEK CHARDONNAY 2008
VQA Four Mile Creek, Niagara Peninsula, Estate Btld.
168039 (XD) 750 mL $14.95

TASTING NOTE: Light gold in colour. The nose delights with wisps of vanilla, coconut, apple, pear and grapefruit peel. On the palate, it’s dry, medium bodied, zippy and refreshing. The aromas replay wonderfully in the mouth and are joined by a hint of minerality. There’s fine harmony here between the fruit and oak. Good, lip-smacking finish. Enjoy alongside grilled chicken with mushrooms, pasta in a cream sauce, or a cheese plate featuring Gruyère. (VINTAGES panel, Jan. 2010)
