Two top-flight reds for barbecue dinners

STERLING MERLOT 2012
Napa Valley, California
330241 (XD) 750 mL $19.95

TASTING NOTE: This is a quite lifted, vibrant and intense merlot – a specialty of Sterling for years now. Expect lovely lifted raspberry-currant fruit, oak spice, cedar and some greenness, with subtle vanillin overlay on the nose. It’s quite full bodied, yet edgy and vibrant, with a sense of graphite minerality. Fairly tannic, very good to excellent length. Not as cushy as most California merlots, and that’s a good thing. Best 2016 to 2020+.

Score: 90 (David Lawrason, winealign.com, July 17, 2015)

Full-bodied & Smooth

XAVIER CÔTES DU RHÔNE 2015
AC, Rhône, France
297317 (XD) 750 mL $17.95

TASTING NOTE: A superb value in CdR, this wine offers woodsmoke, dark cherry and blackberry on a round, smooth yet structured frame. The finish is gloriously smoky. Pair with grilled lamb. (Vintages panel, June 2017)

Full-bodied & Smooth
