RED WINE
CARPINETO MOLIN VECCHIO 2004
IGT Toscana
TASTING NOTE:
A minty style, boast-
ing loads of sweet black currant, black
cherry, violet and tobacco aromas and
flavors. Harmonious and elegant, with
a fresh structure focusing the flavors.
Though almost mature, this still needs
to shed some tannic weight. Offers
a finish of licorice, spice and mineral.
Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Syrah. Drink now through 2020.

A suave red, with
black cherry, rosemary, thyme and
leather flavors. Ripe and powerful,
presenting a swath of dense tannins
on the finish. Ready to enjoy now,
but should improve over the next five
years. Sangiovese and Cabernet
Sauvignon. Drink now through 2024.

QUINTA DO NOVAL TOURIGA
NACIONAL 2009
DOC Douro
TASTING NOTE:
The 2009 TOURIGA
NACIONAL was my favorite of Noval’s
‘09s. This has fine depth, some of the
same great aromatics as the ‘08
reviewed this issue and simply delicious
fruit. It is still elegantly constructed
in the mid-palate while displaying a
serious backbone and fine persist-
ence on the finish. It seems light on
its feet – but it never gives up. Well
integrated and increasingly expressive
with air, it is potentially exceptional
with considerable room for improve-
ment in the cellar. I loved this when
tasted in Douro and it was equally
beautiful in the USA, quickly becoming
one of my favorite monovarietals and
quite possibly the best effort yet from
Noval for table wines. There were just
400 cases produced. Drink 2014-
2025. Score:
94

RED WINE
CLOS MOGADOR 2011
DOCa Priorat
(Isabelle i René Barbier)
TASTING NOTE:
The 2011 Clos Mo-
gador feels ripe, serious and young.
Rene Barbier likes to pick ripe grapes
but without any raisins making it into
the vats. The wine is a blend of the
different grapes in his Clos Mogador
vineyard (it’s just one of a handful of
wines officially awarded the single-
vineyard label by the Catalan wine
institutions): Garnacha, Carinena, Ca-
bernet Sauvignon and Syrah. But the
wine speaks more of the place than
the grapes, with notes of slate, thyme,
rosemary, sage, lavender, black cherries
and a supple palate, full-bodied, with
pungent flavors, round, velvety tannins
and a long aftertaste. This is a superb
effort for such a warm vintage, the
warmest and driest in Priorat since
2003, and great value for the quality.
30,000 bottles are produced of this
prodigious, powerful but balanced
Priorat. Drink 2015-2025. Score:
96
