THE CLASSICS COLLECTION

SEPTEMBER 2017

12 VINTAGES

CASTELLO DI QUERCETO CIGNALE

2011

IGT Colli della Toscana Centrale

James Suckling awarded this wine a

rating of

95

points, describing it as

“Very floral and beautiful with hints of

dark fruit, blackcurrants and dried flowers

such as violets ... ” and calling it “... a

standard-bearer for Super Tuscans ...”

(

jamessuckling.com

, aug. 5, 5015).

TaSTING NOTE:

as always, the 2011

Cignale is a blend of 90% Cabernet

Sauvignon and 10%Merlot (aged for

24 months in oak). The wine represents

a joint venture between vintner alessandro

François and importer Neil Empson, and

it has brought lots of attention to Castello

di Querceto over the years. This edition

shows dark cherry and dark fruit layers

with generous spice, cinnamon and grilled

herb. There’s a sudden point of sour cherry

followed by sharp tannic firmness. This

wine needs to flesh out further. Drink Date:

2016-2026. Score:

92

CASTELLO DI AMA RISERVA

CHIANTI CLASSICO 2004

DOCG

TaSTING NOTE:

Picked 10-22 October

and aged in barriques, 25% new, before

being bottled in May 2006. Colour looks

quite evolved. Very neat and well balanced,

even tidy, on the palate. all the elements

are in the right place – not the drama and

excess of the 2003, but pure pleasure.

Particularly ripe Sangiovese with an edge

of dustiness. Super freshness and great

energy. Long and neat. Perfect for drinking

now? When to drink: [till] 2020. Score:

17 out of 20

RED WINE

CAVE DI PRUN RISERVAAMARONE

DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO

2007

DOCG

(Tenute Salvaterra)

TaSTING NOTE:

aromas of mature

black-skinned berry, leather, pressed

violet, baking spice and a balsamic note

slowly emerge on this full-bodied red.

The firmly structured palate offers dried

black cherry, fig, mocha, tobacco and

licorice alongside a backbone of fine-

grained tannins. a coffee note closes the

finish. Drink through 2022. Score:

RED WINE

QUINTA DA ROMANEIRA TINTO 2012

DOC Douro

TaSTING NOTE:

The estate wine of

Romaneira is aged for 14 months in wood.

This doesn’t mask the fruit although it

certainly gives it extra richness. Dark and

structured, the black fruit is laced with

licorice, spice and firm tannins. The wine

will benefit from time, so drink from 2018.

JULIAN REYNOLDS GRANDE

RESERVA 2007

DO Alentejo

TaSTING NOTE:

The 2007 Grande

Reserva Julian Reynolds is an equal blend

of alicante Bouschet and Syrah, aged for

1 year in a mixture of new and second-use

French oak. It is a beauty, with big, sump-

tuous fruit, but also finesse and grace.

abit too oak-tinged on opening, it overcomes

that easily. Showing caressing texture, it

becomes rather sensual as well as flavorful,

while maintaining its elegance all the

while. It got better and better with aeration.

This is very pretty. Why trade up to the

2007 Gloria Reynolds, the pricier specialty

bottling (reviewed last year)? The styles

and blends are different. This is more

approachable, while the Gloria Reynolds is

more ageworthy and rather more powerful.

The Gloria Reynolds will age better and

it adds just a bit more depth. It is nowhere

near as appealing today, though. Both

perform very well. This Grande Reserva

isn’t the best wine of the producer’s

submissions this issue, but it isn’t all that

far off. at about half the price of the Gloria,

at the least, this is the much better bargain,

especially if you’re not planning on

extended cellaring. Drink Date: 2015-2024.
