PEARL MORISSETTE

PINOT NOIR 2014

VQA Twenty Mile Bench,

Niagara Peninsula

“... François Morissette is an island [unto]

himself. a lone wolf with some crazy ideas

that manifest themselves in the wines

that he makes. you either dig them, or

you don't ... He is always experimenting

and pushing himself to make better

wines through natural processes ... Here’s

what I liked from the tasting recently, most

of which will be released in the coming

months ... The 2014 [Pinot Noir] shows

heavy scented lavender, cherry, cassis and

light toasted spice. It’s built in a more

masculine style with meaty cherry and

blueberry fruit with an earthy finish ... [not

scored as it was unfinished but was

tasted with Morissette for perspective]”

KACABA RESERVE SYRAH 2012

VQA Niagara Escarpment

TaSTING NOTE:

approachable right off

the hop ... lots of full flavoured fruit: cherry,

raspberry, with nice balance of tannins

and acidity; should develop further in both

the fruit department and more Syrah

characteristics are due. Drinks well now

and should be good for the next 7+ years

with ease ... this will be an exciting wine

to have in the cellar cause it’s an exciting

wine right now. Score:

RED WINE

VOYAGER ESTATE CABERNET

SAUVIGNON/MERLOT 2012

Margaret River

TaSTING NOTE:

91% cabernet

sauvignon, 6%merlot, 3% petit verdot,

hand-picked and destemmed to retain

whole berries, primary fermentation for

16 days, with some batches held on skins

for 21 days, the parcels kept separate

during 20 months maturation in French

oak (50% new). a powerful, dense wine

full of rich, plushy fruit, seemingly riper

than Girt by Sea, when the opposite is

the case – or perhaps it’s just the greater

intensity and drive. This will certainly

improve with further time (5+ years) in

bottle. Drink By: 2037. Score:

95

GATT SHIRAZ 2009

High Eden

TaSTING NOTE:

Purple-red; the

bouquet and palate bring together

blackberry, black cherry, licorice/anise

and spice aromas and flavours;

18 months in French and american has

left its impact on the wine, but that oak

is well-integrated; the long finish is

admirable, unimpeded by tannins. Drink

By: 2024. Score:

93

KEN FORRESTER

THE FMC CHENIN BLANC 2015

WO Stellenbosch

The FMC acronym emblazoned on the

winery’s flagship bottling stands for Forrester

Meinert Chenin – a nod to winemakers

Ken Forrester and Martin Meinert, and to

their assertion that this wine is not only

their pinnacle expression of Chenin Blanc,

but also a statement of challenge to the

world. The fruit is sourced from low-yielding

old bush vines and hand-selected over

multiple

tries successives

passes through

the vineyard during the harvest season

(the result being increased ripeness,

richness and some botrytis complexity),

before natural wild yeast begins the

fermentation in new French oak barrels.
