THE CLASSICS COLLECTION

NOVEMBER 2017

16 VINTAGES

CASTELLO DI AMA VIGNETO

BELLAVISTA GRAN SELEZIONE

CHIANTI CLASSICO 2013

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The superb 2013

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto

Bellavista shows impeccable balance and

offers a classic portrait of Sangiovese

(with a small part Malvasia Nera). Castello

di Ama has a beautifully unique way of

interpreting the potential of the Chianti

Classico appellation and this wine is a

prime example. The bouquet follows

classic lines with wild berry and spice,

but Vigneto Bellavista also boasts a wild

side with some cured meat and animal-

like aromas that suit it very well. The

mouthfeel is polished and streamlined,

but those dark fruit flavors should

flesh out with more bottle aging. Drink:

2017-2035. Score:

95

CASTELLO DI AMA VIGNETO

LA CASUCCIA GRAN SELEZIONE

CHIANTI CLASSICO 2013

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Chianti

Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La

Casuccia is soft, open-knit and succulent.

Silky tannins wrap around a core of dark

red cherry, plum, rose petal mint and

sweet spices. The Casuccia is the most

sensual and racy of the Ama wines today.

It should drink well with minimal cellaring.

Once again, the purity of the fruit is

striking. The creamy, explosive finish is a

thing of beauty. The second time I tasted

the 2013 one word came to mind: elation.

Drinking window: 2021-2038. Score:

97

CASANOVA DI NERI

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2012

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Effusive aromas and

flavors of raspberry, cherry, floral, mineral

and tobacco are at the center of this

linear, vibrant red. Well-structured, this

offers terrific length on the sinewy finish.

Best from 2020 through 2035. Score:

COLOMBINI PRIME DONNE

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2012

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2012 Brunello di

Montalcino Prime Donne shows floral

notes of pressed violet or red rose petal

that distinguish it from its peers. Those

delicate tones are very much in line with

Sangiovese and it’s nice to think that

they have remained intact despite the

hot growing season. Background notes

of cassis, dried plum and spice fill in

the rear. A dry mineral note that recalls

polished river stone or crushed granite

also appears. This wine boasts a terrific

bouquet that is infused with elegance

and grace. The mouthfeel is polished and

streamlined. Perhaps the persistence

is slightly shorter compared to the 2010

vintage, but this wine more than makes

up for this thanks to the high quality of its

aromas. Drink: 2018-2030. Score:

94+

LUCE DELLA VITE

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2012

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Luce della Vita is a

second important brand owned by

the Frescobaldi family in Montalcino.

Their other historic estate is the Tenuta

Castelgiocondo with a beautiful villa

overlooking the vineyards. The Luce

brand does extremely well in foreign

markets thanks to its elegant marketing

and packaging. The Luce della Vite

2012 Brunello di Montalcino sees an

annual production of approximately

25,000 bottles. The wine is styled with

contemporary flair. The color is richly

saturated and inky dark with bright ruby

highlights. The color is very attractive.

Bold cherry and blackberry emerge from

the bouquet, and there’s a generous

amount of oak spice and toast to speak

to an international palate. Integrated

oak tannins are folded within the wine’s

rich and fruity consistency. Drink 2017-

2028. Score:

QUERCIABELLA TURPINO 2011

IGT Toscana

TASTING NOTE: Enticing aromas and

flavors of cherry, leather, licorice and

mineral are the hallmarks of this polished,

intense red. Beautifully balanced, but

requires a little more time for the dense

tannins to soften. Shows terrific length

and a complex aftertaste. Cabernet

Franc, Syrah and Merlot. Drink now

through 2023. Score:

94
