THE CLASSICS COLLECTION

DECEMBER 2017

34 VINTAGES

SOUTHERN RHÔNE

RED WINE

XAVIER LA RÉSERVE VII IX X

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

AC

TASTING NOTE: While I reviewed this

NV Châteauneuf du Pape La Reserve

VII IX X (a blend from the 2007, 2009

and 2010 vintages) last year, I was able

to taste it again this go around, and it

still blew me away. Fabulously full-bodied

and decadent, with loads of lavender,

incense, black raspberry and cured-meat

nuances, it’s still youthful and vibrant,

with notable freshness and purity. Enjoy

this brilliant wine through 2028.

DOMAINE BRUSSET

LES CHABRILES CAIRANNE 2015

AC Côtes du Rhône-Villages

TASTING NOTE: As to the reds, the

2015 Cairanne les Chabriles is a

Grenache and Syrah blend that was

destemmed and aged in a mix of

concrete tanks and demi-muids. Rich,

decadent, layered and mouth-filling, it

boasts terrific notes of black raspberries,

cassis, lavender and flowers. It has

plenty of sweet tannin, but I suspect

this will disappear by the time it’s

bottled. Score:

91-93

– ALSACE

WHITE WINE

LÉON BEYER LES ECAILLERS

RIESLING 2010

AC Alsace

TASTING NOTE: Lifted notes of

chamomile and lemon rind hit the nose.

The palate is wonderfully taut and

tight, fresh and precise and displays a

wonderful Riesling contradiction: a

bone-dry taut wine can be laser-like

on the palate and yet have whirls of rich

rounded expansive flavors. Here they

are of citrus zest, yarrow, lanolin and

pure lemon oil. Savor this slowly and

feel enriched. Drink now through 2030.

– CHAMPAGNE

CHARLES HEIDSIECK RESERVE

ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE

AC

TASTING NOTE: Based on 2008 and

20% younger reserve wines (averaging

five-years-old) the NV Rosé Reserve

includes 5% red wine. Disgorged in

early 2015, this cuvée shows a delicate

bouquet that leads to a lovely, pure,

elegant, intense and complex palate that

is full of finesse and tension. The finish

is long and salty, very clear and nicely dry.

Great aging potential. Score:

GOSSET GRAND MILLÉSIME

BRUT CHAMPAGNE 2006

AC

TASTING NOTE: From an excellent

vintage, especially for Pinot Noir, Gosset’s

golden-yellow 2006 Grand Millésime

Brut (which blends 56% Pinot Noir with

44% Chardonnay and was disgorged

after eight years on the lees) displays

a deep, rich and fresh, very mineral

bouquet. This is followed by a full-bodied,

very complex and persistent palate

with purity, finesse and great expression.

This is a mouthful of a straightforward,

well-structured and refreshing millésime

with a long and pure, salty and stringent

finish. This 2006 combines richness

with purity, elegance with complexity, and

finesse with a serious expression and

length. A great Champagne indeed. Drink
