THE CLASSICS COLLECTION

DECEMBER 2017

37 VINTAGES

ITALY

– CAMPANIA

RED WINE

FRATELLI URCIUOLO TAURASI 2011

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: A simply fantastic

expression of Aglianico, this opens with

alluring aromas of underbrush, ripe

black-skinned fruit, leather, tilled earth

and dark spice that carry over to the

delicious full-bodied palate. Firm velvety

tannins and fresh acidity balance the

juicy fruit flavors. It’s already extremely

tempting but hold for even more

complexity. Drink 2020-2031. Cellar

Selection. Score:

94

WHITE WINE

FIANO DI AVELLINO COLLE

DEI CERRI RESERVE 2006

DOCG

(Di Meo)

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Fiano di

Avellino Colle dei Cerri is a solid and

sophisticated white wine with pretty

mineral tones that segue to dried citrus,

melon, yellow rose and candied fruit.

The wine is amazingly conserved and

youthful despite its older age (dating

almost ten years from the vintage). It is

an elegantly aged and layered expression

of Greco and this wine demonstrates

the long aging capacity of this promising

grape. Given its current track record, you

can count on another five years of bottle

aging. Drink Date: 2015-2020. Score:

93

RED WINE

NINO NEGRI 5 STELLE SFURSAT

2013

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Full-bodied and velvety,

this opens with alluring aromas of baking

spice, mature plum, violet, Alpine herb

and a balsamic note. The concentrated

palate is smooth and robust, but it also

boasts a weightless quality, delivering

dried black cherry, nutmeg, cinnamon,

anise, dried date and pipe tobacco

alongside firm polished tannins and

fresh acidity. A mineral note closes the

finish. This is the best Sfursat 5 Stelle

I’ve tried so far. Drink 2018-2028. Cellar

Selection. Score:

RED WINE

E. PIRA E FIGLI CHIARA BOSCHIS

MOSCONI BAROLO 2013

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: This is very concentrated

on the nose with so much blackberry,

blueberry and ripe-strawberry character.

Camomile-tea undertones. Full-bodied,

very polished and sexy with racy tannins

and a long and flavorful finish. Shows

depth and texture. Better in 2021.

ENZO BOGLIETTI CASE NERE

BAROLO 2013

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: I like the cherry and

berry character to this with hints of

lemon rind. Medium to full body, firm

and silky tannins and long and gorgeous

flavor and texture. Drinkable but better

in 2021. Score:

96
