THE CLASSICS COLLECTION

DECEMBER 2017

45 VINTAGES

SOUTH AFRICA

RED WINE

MULLINEUX SYRAH 2015

Unfiltered and unfined,

WO Swartland

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Syrah

includes two additional vineyards on

granite soils after the 2015, whilst the

whole bunch component is back up

to 60%. It has a clean and precise

bouquet with floral-tinged red berry

fruit (red cherry and wild strawberry),

nicely focused and developing more

intensity with aeration. The palate is

very well balanced with crisp acidity,

fine structure, much more detail than

the 2014 and I think that is down to

the higher whole bunch proportion, the

sense of energy flowing through on the

long finish. Drink Date: 2018-2030.

RED WINE

CASARENA ICONO 2012

Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: There is a new red that

goes straight to the top of the range ...

Malbec represents 60% of the blend, and

is fermented in whole clusters in open oak

barrels. The rest is destemmed Cabernet

Sauvignon that ferments in rolling oak

barrels. The wines are blended before

malolactic fermentation which is carried

out in cement vats. The wine is then put

back in barrel where it matured for 18

months. It’s very floral and there are no

oak aromas. With time the wine develops

unusual aromas reminiscent of green tea ...

The wine is medium-boded, with very fine

tannins and refreshing acidity. It even

makes you salivate, which is a triumph

for location and vintage. 4,500 bottles

produced. Drink date: 2015-2020.

ALTA VISTA ALIZARINE

SINGLE VINEYARD MALBEC 2012

Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: Right away this

pitch-dark Malbec displays max ripeness

through a dynamic mix of prune,

blackberry, coconut, violet petal and

leathery aromas. A hugely concentrated

palate is hardly a shock, while firm acidity

cuts a viscous palate with ripe cassis,

plum, blackberry and black cherry flavors.

Drink this voluptuous wine through 2022.

RED WINE

TENSLEY COLSON CANYON

VINEYARD SYRAH 2015

Santa Barbara County

TASTING NOTE: Another highlight, the

2015 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard

brings together so many of the elements

that make Tensley’s Syrahs so compelling.

Intense in its aromatics and palate feel,

the 2015 hits all the right notes. Sweet

red cherry, rose petal, raspberry jam

and a dollop of French oak are some of

the signatures. Because of the low yields,

the new oak is a bit high in 2015, but

all the elements are very nicely married.

The Colson Canyon is shaping up to

be another gem from Joey Tensley.

JOSEPH PHELPS FREESTONE

VINEYARD PINOT NOIR 2014

Sonoma Coast

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Pinot Noir

Freestone Vineyard is a blend from

Phelps’ Pastorale and Quarter Moon sites.

Aged 14 months in 35% new French

oak, and made from a bevy of Dijon clones

as well as the Mt. Eden (believed to be

from the Musigny vineyard), this is a big

production cuvée of 11,600 cases.

The wine has a dark ruby color and a big,

sweet kiss of strawberries, raspberries,

tart cherries and pomegranate as well as

some loamy soil notes, followed by a juicy,

medium-bodied mouthfeel and crisp,

zesty finish. Drink it over the next 7-8

years. Drink Date: 2016-2024. Score:

90
