THE CLASSICS COLLECTION

DECEMBER 2017

48 VINTAGES

FLOWERS CAMP MEETING RIDGE

VINEYARD CHARDONNAY 2013

Sonoma Coast

TASTING NOTE: Orange peel, smoke,

spices, mint and apricot pit flesh out in the

2013 Chardonnay Camp Meeting Ridge

Vineyard. Bold and textured in its flavors

but classically mid-weight in style, the

2013 captures a hugely attractive middle

ground. Drinking window: 2016-2023.

RED WINE

EVENING LAND LA SOURCE

PINOT NOIR 2014

Seven Springs Vineyard,

Eola-Amity Hills

TASTING NOTE: Firm and focused,

with powdery tannins around a lively

core of rose petal-infused raspberry

and blackberry flavors, gliding into a

long and expressive finish marked

by minerally notes of wet stone. Best

from 2018 through 2024. 1,400 cases

made. Score:

ELK COVE CLAY COURT

PINOT NOIR 2014

Willamette Valley

TASTING NOTE: A standout among the

winery’s single-vineyard selections, this

big-boned effort brings flavors of chewy

cherry alongside a citrus highlight and

a definite underpinning of wet stone and

clay. Texturally compelling, it should age

gracefully through 2024. Score:

FORTIFIED

PORT

KOPKE COLHEITA PORT 1957

DOC

TASTING NOTE: It is stunning how

youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening,

it has mature flavors that emerge, easily

demonstrating the complexity and

concentrated aromatics one expects.

Gripping on the finish, this delivers fruit

flavor and seems to linger indefinitely.

When I first saw this, it was tasted next

to even more brilliant Colheitas and a

bit overshadowed. On its own, it is even

more stunning. It was pretty fine next

to some other greats here as well.

TAYLOR FLADGATE

40-YEAR-OLD TAWNY PORT

DOP

TASTING NOTE: Taylor Fladgate 40 Year

Old is made with estate fruit in miniscule

quantities. This is the essence of port

from its spicy (cinnamon) nutty nose to

its ultra complex collection of scents

and flavours. On the palate the attack is

mellow and silky smooth – it doesn’t age

in wood for forty years for nothing. The

flavours are strong and nutty reminiscent

of figs, raisins, caramel, dried apricots,

orange peel and brown sugar. The finish

is a long, soft warm complex affair that

never really seems to go away that is

drier than you might think. Buy and hold

or drink now with a nutty cake dessert.

A fabulous experience. Tasted July

2015. Score:

96

SHERRY

WELLINGTON 20-YEAR-OLD V.O.S.

PALO CORTADO SHERRY

DO

TASTING NOTE: A clean, racy style, with

almond and hazelnut husk notes backed

by toasted corn, walnut and singed

sandalwood accents. A touch of dried

persimmon echoes on the very dry finish.

Drink now. 84 cases made. Score:
