HENNESSY PARADIS EXTRA RARE COGNAC
AC

208298 750mL $1,594.00

TASTING NOTE: Golden amber coloured Paradis was created in 1979 by Maurice Fillioux when Hennessy was asked for an "ultra-prestige" cognac higher in quality than XO. Everything is there but no one note dominates. Complex with a silky attack, it has length and persistence. Made from 100 different batches, the youngest 25 years old and the eldest from the beginning of the last century (1900, 1910, 1920), it's 85% to 90% from Grande Champagne. It has a timeless, distinguished elegance and a personality that grows as you swallow and comes back wave after wave. Savour in a snifter - no water, no ice, just bliss. Score: 98 (Margaret Swaine, winealign.com, Feb. 23, 2015)

REMY MARTIN CENTAURE DE DIAMANT
AC Cognac, France

393108 700mL $1,000.00

TASTING NOTE: Fairly complex nose with ripe stone fruit, red berries and floral notes. Full flow entry into the mouth and equally complex flavours with peach, plum alongside mango and pineapple. Good balance of fruit and oak and some well developed mature notes. Elegant and rewarding. Score: Gold (International Wine & Spirit Competition, 2013)

ANNONCE DE BELAIR MONANGE 2014
AC Saint-Émilion

516807 (XD) 750mL $82.00

Born from the fusion of the vineyards of châteaux Bélair and Magdelaine, both historic First Classified Growths of Saint-Émilion, this limited-production wine is grown in a vineyard which can trace its viticultural origins to Roman times and is situated at the highest point of Saint-Émilion's famed limestone plateau. Vinification takes place in concrete and stainless-steel vats, where maceration and extraction are gentle and measured in order to allow the fruit its highest expression, before the wine is aged in French oak barrels.

CHÂTEAU DUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU LA CROIX CUVÉE COLBERT 2014
AC Saint-Julien

523803 (XD) 750mL $122.00

The origins of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou lie in the 18th century, and it was among the classified growths enshrined in 1855. This sibling wine to the grand vin offers a taste of this historic estate.

ESPÉRANCE DE TROTANOY 2014
AC Pomerol

516799 (XD) 750mL $111.00

Purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, Château Trotanoy is home to dense gravel-on-clay and clay-on-iron soils that are difficult, yet rewarding, to cultivate. A selection of gravel-based parcels on the northeastern part of the estate has been dedicated to Espérance de Trotanoy, a wine that is fruit-forward and approachable after just a few years of cellaring. Produced in limited quantities and only in certain years, it is vinified in small concrete vats and aged in French oak barrels.

CHÂTEAU FRANC-MAYNE 2009
AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

524702 (XD) 750mL $69.00

TASTING NOTE: This gushes up front with dark fig, blueberry cobbler and steeped black currant fruit, showing just enough racy graphite cut on the back end for balance. Espresso and fig bread notes hang in the background. Best from 2013 through 2022. 1,915 cases made. Score: 91 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, March 31, 2012)

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION 2006
1er cru, AC Pessac-Léognan

516831 (XD) 750mL $1,043.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Château Haut-Brion has a more ostentatious bouquet than the comparatively reserved La Mission: quite feisty blackberry, briary, kirsch and red plum scents, hints of leather and sage tucked just underneath. This is a bouquet determined to make an impression! The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, a gentle build to a concentrated, earthy, truffle-tinged finish that lingers long in the mouth. This seems to have the upper-hand over the La Mission and probably has a longer future. A thoroughbred from Jean-Philippe Delmas and his team. Tasted January 2016. Drink Date: 2018-2045. Score: 96 (Neal Martin, robertparker.com, May 29, 2016)

DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER CLOS DES LUNES LUNE D'ARGENT BLANC 2014
AC Pessac-Léognan

530642 (XD) 750mL $34.00

TASTING NOTE: This delivers a pure blast of just-baked shortbread, along with racy yellow apple, fennel, mirabelle plum and white peach flavors. The long finish lets everything play out wonderfully. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Drink now through 2022. 8,335 cases made. Score: 93 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, March 31, 2017)

CHÂTEAU CAILLOU 2009
AC Sauternes

524454 (S) 750mL $70.00

TASTING NOTE: Lemon peel, spices and honey on the nose. Full-bodied, with a dense yet elegant structure. Medium sweet, with a spicy finish. Stylish. Very well done. Score: 92-95 (James Suckling, winespectator.com, April 7, 2010)

ALBERT MOROT BEAUNE BRESSANDES 1ER CRU 2015
AC

610584 (XD) 750mL $72.00

TASTING NOTE: (still a significant percentage of malic acidity remaining): Bright ruby-red. Reticent aromas of black fruits and mint. Boasts a dense texture and almost chocolatey sweetness but an impression of calcaire energy gives the very concentrated middle palate considerable finesse for a Beaune wine. Slightly high-toned in a seductive way. Still quite young and unevolved--and tricky to assess with confidence prior to the end of its malolactic fermentation--but this looks to be a superb vintage for this premier cru. The finish displays fine-grained tannins and terrific subtle length and lingering perfume. Score: 91-93 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, Jan. 2017)

BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS VIGNE DE L'ENFANT JÉSUS GRÈVES 1ER CRU 2015
AC

415000 (XD) 750mL $143.00

TASTING NOTE: A discreet though not invisible application of wood sets off highly complex aromas of plum liqueur and a wide range of floral elements that are trimmed in soft spice and earth notes. There is outstanding richness to the full-bodied and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that possess a seductive, even caressing mouth feel before concluding in a decidedly firm, well-balanced and slightly austere finish. This is very clearly built-to-age and should mature slowly over the next 12 to 15 years. Very impressive. Score: 92-94 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 15, 2017)

DOMAINE DU MEIX-FOULOT CLOS DU CHÂTEAU DE MONTAIGU MERCUREY 1ER CRU 2015

The grapes for this wine are grown on vines aged 25 to 70 years.

TASTING NOTE: Snappy black fruit and sweet spice. Very open-knit with pleasant bitterness on the finish. Resonates with liquorice and clove on the length. Distinguished. Good Value. Drink 2017-2019. Score: 16.5 (Richard Hemming, MW, jancisrobinson.com, Jan. 18, 2017)

DOMAINE FRANÇOIS LUMPP GIVRY PIED DU CLOU 1ER CRU 2015
AC

485037 (XD) 750mL $60.00

TASTING NOTE: Here the ripe nose is quite similar to that of the Brûlée though with the addition of more spice elements. On the palate the middle weight flavors are both slightly finer but also a bit more delineated as well before terminating in a highly persistent, balanced and refined finale. This is potentially very good and well worth a look, particularly for a red that should drink well both early and with age. Drink: 2019+. Score: 90-92 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, Oct. 8, 2016)

FRANCOIS LUMPP CLOS DU CRAS LONG GIVRY 1ER CRU 2015
AC

523795 (XD) 750mL $63.00

TASTING NOTE: Here the nose is even more complex and just as spicy with its elegant array of various red and dark berries, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and rose petal nuances. There is once again excellent richness, volume and concentration to the suave and velvet-textured flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm tannins on the ever-so-mildly austere finale. Highly recommended. Drink: 2021+. Score: 91-94 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, Oct. 8, 2016)

DOMAINE JESSIAUME LES CENT VIGNES BEAUNE 1ER CRU 2014
AC

468884 (XD) 750mL $62.00

TASTING NOTE: This rich wine has spice and red fruits backed by a dry texture. The smoky wood is still right up front, giving the wine a firm character. Wait for the fruit to develop further and drink from 2020. Score: 92 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Oct. 1, 2016)

ANTONIN GUYON CORTON CLOS DU ROY GRAND CRU 2013
AC

715342 (XD) 750mL $130.00

TASTING NOTE: There is a subtle but not invisible application of wood to the less elegant but even more complex nose of game, forest floor, plum and earth that also lacks a touch of freshness. The powerful and broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while displaying plenty of minerality on the youthfully austere and backward finish that is well-balanced and impressively long. In the same fashion as the Bressandes my range awards the benefit of the doubt that the lack of freshness presently displayed by the nose will eventually return to form. Drink: 2025+. LOUIS JADOT SAVIGNY-LÈS-BEAUNE 2010
AC

77560 (XD) 750mL $46.00

TASTING NOTE: Moderate wood influence sets off intensely earthy ripe red berry fruit aromas that sit atop the rich, pure and relatively fine middle weight flavors that possess very good depth and length. This moderately structured effort is a quality Savigny villages and worth considering. Drink: 2016+. Score: 87-89 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 1, 2012)

MAISON ROCHE DE BELLENE CLOS DE LA ROCHE GRAND CRU 1998
AC

206961 (XD) 750mL $338.00

TASTING NOTE: Clos de La Roche 1998 may be 19 years old but you have to swirl the britches out of this Grand Cru because reduction persists in its make-up. Once you work your way over the wall a field of wildflowers and a roses bouquet lays out as far as the nose can mind's eye. This is pure candy in its most arid, blessed and gout de terroir way. It is as charming as Burgundy can be and yet so fine of tannin, tight and duplicitously-grained in clone upon itself. One of those wines so difficult to put to words because it teaches and you can do nothing but listen. I'd still want to wait two more years, maybe more, before knowing I've waited long enough. Close de la Roche speaks to me but to answer with any real credibility and respect I will need to think some more. Drink 2019-2035. Tasted February 2017. Score: 97 (Michael Godel, winealign.com, June 07, 2017)

BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS MONTRACHET GRAND CRU 2015
AC

402040 (XD) 750mL $903.00

TASTING NOTE: There is a hint of exoticism to the citrus, pear and white peach suffused nose that is presently trimmed in a noticeable, if very slight, touch of sulfur. The rich and extremely concentrated big-bodied flavors possess an impressive amount of dry extract as well as excellent length. Not surprisingly this is definitely going to need time as it's on the monolithic side today and there isn't quite the same sense of energy compared to the La Cabotte. Those items duly noted, my rating offers the benefit of the doubt that this will harmonize in time because at the time of my tasting it had been in bottle for barely 45 days. Score: 94 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 11, 2017)

DANIEL BARRAUD LA VERCHÈRE POUILLY-FUISSÉ 2015

529248 (XD) 750mL $47.00

TASTING NOTE: Full medium yellow. Highly complex scents and flavors of vineyard peach, preserved lemon and grapefruit, plus a riper suggestion of mirabelle. Compellingly rich, fine-grained and deep, conveying a strong impression of terroir in spite of its full alcohol. Finishes dusty and long, with great finesse, sexy minerality and a touch of citrus lift. A very elegant, strong Pouilly-Fuissé. Score: 90-92 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, Oct. 2016)

DOMAINE BACHELET-MONNOT CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2015

DOMAINE CHRISTIAN MOREAU PÈRE & FILS LES CLOS CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2015

42366 (XD) 750mL $82.00

TASTING NOTE: A reserved and ripe nose features white orchard fruit and floral notes set off by deft touches of wood and citrus peel. There is excellent richness to the overtly powerful and concentrated medium plus weight flavors that possess ample amounts of dry extract that confer a textured feel to the impressively intense and mouth coating finish. This is a very good 2015 that should repay mid-term cellaring. Drink: 2020+. Score: 90-93 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, Oct. 8, 2016)

DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE LES PREUSES CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2015
AC

391276 (XD) 750mL $114.00

TASTING NOTE: Bright, light yellow. Discreet aromas of white peach, flowers and spices. At once elegant and penetrating; not a fleshy grand cru but very youthful and tightly wound in the early going, with a refined texture to its peach, white pepper and spice flavors. Much less expressive today than the Valmur, even a bit dry on the back end, this classy, understated wine will need time in bottle to express itself. JOSEPH DROUHIN MONTRACHET MARQUIS DE LAGUICHE GRAND CRU 2015

TASTING NOTE: Deep aromas of white peach, gunflint, clove, iodine and white pepper. Penetrating, spicy wine with terrific mineral spine and thrust. Expands impressively in the mouth, conveying a strong impression of dry extract and energy. Nothing fat or heavy about this Montrachet - and no easy sweetness either. Delivers a captivating balance of fruit, minerality and acidity and finishes with resounding length and serious kick. Score: 93-95 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, Sept. 2016)

PATRICK JAVILLIER LES TILLETS MEURSAULT 2015
AC

714899 (XD) 750mL $94.00

TASTING NOTE: Tight, pure aromas of lime, white peach, minerals and crushed rock. Doesn't offer quite the urgent intensity or early balance of the Clos du Cromin, but insidious ripe acidity and a dusty, tactile quality give shape to the sweet lime and stone fruit flavors. 523746 (XD) 750mL $51.00

TASTING NOTE: A ripe, fresh and well-layered nose is composed primarily of white orchard fruit, and in particular essence of pear, along with hints of spice and honey. The exceptionally rounded and pliant flavors possess good mid-palate density before concluding in a saline-inflected and sappy finish. This should drink well young too. Drink: 2020+. DOMAINE LOUIS MOREAU LES CLOS CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2014

423293 (XD) 750mL $84.00

TASTING NOTE: This wine is young, surprisingly fruity at this stage for this normally textured, structured Grand Cru. A pure line of sliced apple and green-plum flavors are shot through with tangy acidity. The fruitiness and intense acidity will pass soon and the wine will develop the proper steely, tight and mineral character. It will drink at its best from 2020. Cellar Selection. 92171 (XD) 750mL $269.00

TASTING NOTE: In contrast to the regular cuvée of CC this is really quite aromatically pretty with a discreet dollop of wood setting off the bright and cool aromas of white flower, green apple and a wide array of citrus and wet stone nuances. There is more volume, power and density to the wonderfully textured big-bodied flavors that stain the palate with sappy dry extract that also buffers the hugely long finish that exhibits markedly better depth. This well-balanced effort should age effortlessly well and be the better for it. Drink: 2024+. Score: 92-94 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 15, 2016)

TASTING NOTE: A completely different and slightly riper nose offers up notes of petrol, resin and both white and yellow orchard fruit. 529347 (XD) 750mL $30.00

TASTING NOTE: As to the reds, the 2015 Cairanne les Chabriles is a Grenache and Syrah blend that was destemmed and aged in a mix of concrete tanks and demi-muids. Rich, decadent, layered and mouth-filling, it boasts terrific notes of black raspberries, cassis, lavender and flowers. This inky black/blue-colored Hermitage offers an off-the-charts array of blackberries, blueberries, crushed rocks, wood smoke and charred meats. TASTING NOTE: This is intense, as dense ganache, espresso, roasted juniper and alder notes form an impressive frame around an equally ornate core of steeped fig, blackberry and black currant fruit flavors, all while maintaining terrific cut and drive despite the heft. TASTING NOTE: A non-vintage blend of Xavier's favorite vintage, the NV Châteauneuf du Pape X XII XV is a massive, thick, unctuous beauty that's almost overflowing with notes of dark fruits, blackberries, truffle, chocolate and crushed rock. You almost need a fork to drink this baby, but man, what a wine! It stays lively and fresh, with building tannin, a stacked mid-palate and a big finish. 529263 (XD) 750mL $35.00

TASTING NOTE: Lifted notes of chamomile and lemon rind hit the nose. The palate is wonderfully taut and tight, fresh and precise and displays a wonderful Riesling contradiction: a bone-dry taut wine can be laser-like on the palate and yet have whirls of rich rounded expansive flavors. GOSSET GRAND MILLÉSIME BRUT CHAMPAGNE 2006

TASTING NOTE: From an excellent vintage, especially for Pinot Noir, Gosset's golden-yellow 2006 Grand Millésime Brut (which blends 56% Pinot Noir with 44% Chardonnay and was disgorged after eight years on the lees) displays a deep, rich and fresh, very mineral bouquet. This is followed by a full-bodied, very complex and persistent palate with purity, finesse and great expression. This is a mouthful of a straightforward, well-structured and refreshing millésime with a long and pure, salty and stringent finish. KRUG CLOS DU MESNIL BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT CHAMPAGNE 2002
AC

38711 (XD) 750mL $1,149.00

TASTING NOTE: This is a wine with staggering length and immense purity. It's as powerful as chardonnay can be, showcasing an incredible depth of pure fresh lemons, yellow grapefruit, honey and dried white and yellow flowers. The concentration and complexity of primary fruits are outstanding, and there are some more exotic flavors here too in the peach and green-mango spectrum. The texture is ultra-fine and creamy through the mid-palate, its majestic curves sweeping long around a sturdy mineral core. This is very silky and focused, offering gently creamy moments before twisting towards a composed, restricted and compressed chalk-like finish. It delivers an impression of chardonnay that captures incredible richness, fleshiness, persistence and power. Yet the acidity is staggering while being simultaneously perfectly balanced. "My red cuvée, Trois Cépages, is clearly not made in a Burgundian way because it's a blend of Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Trousseau. It is not possible to make Jura wines in the same manner as in Burgundy because we have to adapt to the local terroir, and to how the plant behaves in such a terroir. That is one reason why this Jura project is interesting and sometimes challenging." (Guillaume d'Angerville, as quoted in Decanter magazine, March 2017)

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Siebeldinger Im Sonnenschein Ganz Horn Riesling trocken GG opens with a very clear and elegant, aromatic and flinty-flavored bouquet of crushed stones that is almost Mosel-like in style. Clear, round and elegant on the palate, this is a very pure, fresh, finessed and lingeringly salty Riesling. It is a classic with a perfect four grams of residual sugar that gives this seductive juiciness and remarkable elegance. The finish is almost chalky in its dustiness and grippy salinity. TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Fiano di Avellino Colle dei Cerri is a solid and sophisticated white wine with pretty mineral tones that segue to dried citrus, melon, yellow rose and candied fruit. The wine is amazingly conserved and youthful despite its older age (dating almost ten years from the vintage). TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Montevertine shows a little less density and darkness compared to its predecessors. That lighter color and leaner consistency you see here is characteristic of the 2014 vintage that saw little sunshine during the summer months and lots of rain. But, the wine also offers a point of acidic freshness, cherry brightness and streamlined elegance that sets it apart. It represents extraordinary craftsmanship by the entire winemaking team. Despite the difficulties encountered, what emerges is a graceful, charming and beautifully vintage-specific Sangiovese. Drink Date: 2018-2028. Score: 91-93 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, April 28, 2017)

SASSICAIA 2014
DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia

480541 (D) 1500mL $492.00

TASTING NOTE: This is my official review of the 2014 Bolgheri Sassicaia after having been graciously invited to the estate for various barrel samples spanning back several years. I have watched the evolution of this wine with a close eye and am impressed by how its real quality is diametrically opposed to the poor expectations of this difficult vintage. The nose is redolent of bright fruit and blackberry. Spice, tar and leather appear subtly at the back. The wine took on considerable weight each year I came back to taste it and this vintage was bottled earlier than average, precisely to give it more time to unwind and relax in the small confines of the bottle. This is a solid effort for sure and the wine is a stunning example of what it takes to make great wine, even when weather conditions are not in your favor. Drink Date: 2018-2030. Score: 93 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, April 28, 2017)

FATTORIA LA MASSA CARLA 6 2013
IGT Toscana

532754 (XD) 750mL $141.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Carla 6 is a pure expression of Sangiovese from a man who has waged a very public war against the Chianti Classico Consorzio and its regulations. This wine chooses to be an IGT Toscana instead. That rebellious spirit shaped the extraordinary personality of this wine. The bouquet reveals beautiful plum and dark cherry with succulent layers of spice and tobacco. Carla 6 shows great balance. There is both crispness and structural firmness at the back, and that solid tannic backbone should carry it through the next ten years of bottle aging. Drink date: 2017-2028. FONTODI FLACCIANELLO DELLA PIEVE 2013
IGT Colli Toscana Centrale

963744 (XD) 750mL $129.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Flaccianello della Pieve is a commanding wine and a strong protagonist of both the vintage and its territory. Connoisseurs of Sangiovese will be hard pressed to find a wine more authentic, elegant, complex and pristine than this. I am a huge fan of the 2013 vintage in Chianti Classico and the Flaccianello della Pieva is one big reason for this love affair. The bouquet is gorgeous and delineated with wild berry, tangy spice, crushed mineral and forest flower. Yet, the wine's color is dark, brooding and austere. The wine offers exuberance and energy in the mouth, thanks to its balanced acidity and seemingly never-ending finish. It should age forward for twenty years or more. Congratulations Fontodi. Score: 98 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Dec. 30, 2016)

CASA EMMA CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE 2012
DOCG

526723 (XD) 750mL $60.00

TASTING NOTE: A fresh and fruity red with hints of tobacco and berry. Medium to full body, solid core of chewy yet polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Solid Gran Selezione. Drink or hold. Score: 94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Aug. 21, 2016)

CASANOVA DI NERI TENUTA NUOVA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2012
DOCG, Tuscany, Italy

85241 (D) 750mL $138.00

TASTING NOTE: The Casanova di Neri 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is a beautiful wine that recalls many of the stunning characteristics found in its high-scoring predecessor. I gave a perfect 100 points to the 2010 edition of this same wine. This expression, made two years later, continues in that tradition of excellence. The quality of fruit is profound and intense. The bouquet offers black cherry, spice, leather, balsam herb, cola and licorice. The complexity is absolutely impressive. The mouthfeel, however, is slightly thinner. The classic 2010 vintage is remembered for its twofold punch of elegance and power. Alternatively, the 2012 vintage shows aromatic intensity and less persistence on the finish, generally speaking. Having said that, this remains one Bellissimo Brunello. Drink Date: 2019-2035. Score: 96 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Feb. 28, 2017)

CONTI COSTANTI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2012
DOCG

707216 (XD) 750mL $111.00

This wine was awarded the #1 wine in Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Cellar Selection Best of Year 2017.

TASTING NOTE: Immensely inviting, this opens with fragrant pipe tobacco, crushed berry, new leather and pressed violet aromas. On the palate, firm, refined tannins underpin juicy black cherry, raspberry and cinnamon flavors, while orange zest accents and an energizing mineral note lift the finish. It's beautifully balanced with bright acidity and will reward a bit of cellaring. Drink 2020-2032. Cellar Selection. Score: 98 (Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2017)

CORTONESI POGGIARELLI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2012

TOLAINI TENUTA MONTEBELLO PICCONERO 2011
IGT Toscana

181784 (XD) 750mL $98.00

TASTING NOTE: A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, the 2011 Picconero Tenuta Montebello is a distinguished and important wine. I've been noticing how well Cabernet Franc performs at this Tuscan estate. You get a good sense of this here (and especially in this vintage). The wine opens to an inky black appearance as you would expect, with fragrant aromas of dried blackberry and candied cherry. Warmer aromas of allspice and sweet clove add more consistency and weight to the overall package. These various attributes find terrific harmony. Score: 93 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Dec. 30, 2016)

FULIGNI RISERVA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2007
DOCG

526806 (XD) 750mL $269.00

QUINTARELLI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE 2009
DOC

986117 (XD) 750mL $109.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2009 Valpolicella Classico is a wine of pedigree and depth. The blend is Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara, and other loose odds and ends found in the vineyards. Half the grapes are pressed as fresh fruit. The other half sees a brief two-month appassimento. The two are blended and macerated on the leftover skins of Amarone. The wine then goes into botte grande for six years and bottle for an additional six months for full integration. This classic vintage shows sweet fruit and black spice with lingering sweetness on the close. The wine imparts a round and slightly sweet flavor profile with earthy end notes of spice and campfire ash. Drink Date: 2018-2030. Score: 93 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, May 31, 2017)

LE RAGOSE AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2007
DOC

700872 (XD) 750mL $60.00

TASTING NOTE: Opaque dark ruby. Aromas of red plum, black cherry, sweet spices and milk chocolate. A rich, round, and very well balanced Amarone offering a boatload of red cherry, dark plum, brown spices and milk chocolate flavors that are precise and pure. Finishes very long and creamy. Lovely Amarone. (15.5% alcohol). Drinking Window: 2017-2029. Score: 93 (Ian D'Agata, vinous.com, March 2017)

QUINTARELLI ALZERO 2007
IGT Veneto

402156 (D) 750mL $597.00

TASTING NOTE: A blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, the 2007 Alzero is an Amarone-inspired red blend. The two Cabernet varieties undergo a three-month appassimento process and the Merlot is added at the last minute before bottling. This last grape adds a very evident layer of cherry sweetness and softness that goes a long way in defining this wine. Alzero has been in production since 1983 and no vintage has ever been skipped. This is a dark and brooding expression with a playful mix of sweet fruit intensity and dark tannic background shading. Drink Date: 2018-2035. Score: 95 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, May 31, 2017)

QUINTARELLI ROSSO DEL BEPI 2005
IGT Veneto

991356 (D) 750mL $214.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Rosso del Bepi is made with the same blend of grapes found in the Valpolicella Superiore. Only in the case of this wine, the entire mass of fruit sees a four-month appassimento cycle. The wine is aged in large oak casks for eight years. A severe hail storm in 2005 reduced yields. The fruit was good in that vintage, but not good enough to become Amarone. All that potential got locked into this wine instead. Despite its age, the Rosso del Bepi offers surprising freshness and crispness with delineated tones of dried cherry and pressed rose. This wine has more decades of cellar aging locked within. Drink Date: 2017-2035. Score: 95 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, May 31, 2017)

BUSSOLA VIGNETO ALTO AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2003
DOC

526673 (XD) 750mL $239.00

TASTING NOTE: I remember tasting the 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico TB Vigneto Alto when it was in barrel and the fermentations were very slow. Today, it has emerged from that awkward state and developed into a very beautiful Amarone. Dried dark cherry notes meld into cloves, pipe tobacco and worn-in leather in a striking, beautifully delineated Amarone loaded with complexity. The flavors are a touch developed, making the 2003 an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. The 2003 doesn't quite reach the level of the very best years - which would have been nearly impossible in this vintage - but it comes very close. There is a lot to like here, especially for readers looking for a near-term fix of Amarone. Drinking window: 2014-2023. Score: 94 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, March 2014)

QUINTA DE S. JOSÉ RESERVA 2013
DOC Douro

525808 (XD) 750mL $48.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Reserva Quinta de S. José is 45% Touriga Nacional with the rest a field blend from old vines (about 50 years old and featuring a lot of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca), aged in a mixture of new and used French oak for approximately 12 months. This looks like one of the winery's better efforts for this bottling. Tight and intense, this also adds complexity to go with the power--and just now, there is plenty of power and pop on the end, perhaps more than the winery's 2013 Touriga, also reviewed. Its main flaw when tasted was its creamy oak component, but that should be gradually absorbed with time. This should age well. This might not be imported and no USA price was set. It runs around 25 Euros in Portugal. Drink date: 2019-2038. Score: 94 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Dec. 30, 2016)

LUIS SEABRA DOURO BRANCO XISTO CRU 2014
DOC Douro

523266 (XD) 750mL $52.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Branco "Xisto Cru" is an old-vines (80 years) blend of roughly 70% Rabigato with dollops of Códega, Gouveio, Viosinho and Donzelinho Branco, sourced from vines at 650- to 700-meters altitude. It was aged for 10 months in used French barriques. It is dry and comes in at 12.4% alcohol. Brooding, fresh and woody, more in texture than flavor, this is very focused and precise, tightly wound and nicely concentrated while retaining elegance. Finishing with tension and power, this couples its elegance and freshness with fine structure. With the feel of a fine Burgundy, this is beautifully wrought. It is a food wine, of course. It won't be as much fun to drink on its own. There were just 5,184 bottles produced along with 113 magnums. Drink Date: 2016-2026. Score: 94 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, June 29, 2016)

EL PUNTIDO 2011
DOCa Rioja

470609 (XD) 750mL $75.00

TASTING NOTE: Grown at the upper limits (600m-630m) for Tempranillo, this single vineyard of 25ha is situated just below the town of Laguardia on bony soils. It's a very chalky, mineral wine that combines power with acidity. Complex, spicy and refreshing, with skilfully handled new oak and great ageing potential. Drink: 2017-2030. Score: 97 (Tim Atkin, MW, decanter.com, Feb. 16, 2016)

TORRES GRANS MURALLES 2010
DO Conca de Barberà

378851 (D) 750mL $99.00

TASTING NOTE: The superb red blend 2010 Grans Muralles is a multi-grape mixture of Garnacha Tinta, Monastrell, Querol, Cariñena and Garró grown on slate soils in the appellation Conca de Barberà, in the vicinity of the Poblet monastery, which is surrounded by walls that name the wine. It's a dark, concentrated and closed red with a clear Mediterranean profile slowly revealing aromas of esparto grass, tree bark and a rustic, somewhat dusty touch that coats the ripe black fruit. It matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels and it's still not oaky, but the palate reveals some spicy flavors and some pointy tannins that should polish with more time in bottle. A very good showing for Grans Muralles. Drink: 2016-2024. Score: 93 (Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com, June 28, 2015)

CASTILLO YGAY GRAN RESERVA ESPECIAL BLANCO 1986
DOCa Rioja

532333 (XD) 750mL $763.00

TASTING NOTE: I have been terribly excited about this wine since I first learned that (part of) it was still in cement waiting to be bottled in September 2013. I consider the rare white Castillo Ygay one of the greatest white wines ever produced in Spain, and the 1986 Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial is a great addition to the portfolio of the winery--an historic wine that is coming back to life ... This 1986 had seen the light as a limited early release bottled in 1992 and sold around 1995, and some bottles might still be found in the market. But most of it remained unbottled and was kept at the winery, where it stayed in oak for 21 years, followed by some six years in cement vats until it was bottled. It has 13.5% alcohol, an extremely low pH of 2.98 and 6.75 grams of acidity (tartaric). It has a very subtle nose and it's a bit shy, a little closed at first. It was only bottled one and a half years ago, and it's not crazy to say that the wine is showing extremely young. The wine shows more open the day after, when it has developed some nuances of mushrooms and verbena tea. This is mostly Viura with perhaps a pinch of Malvasía Riojana (aka Alarije). The palate is both powerful and elegant, with superb acidity and great length, with volume and sharpness, with a mineral, umami-driven finish. It fills your mouth, tickles your taste buds and makes you salivate ... I think this is a perfect wine. It seems to be getting younger and younger with time in the glass; it seems to be getting more focused and sharper, and I have no doubt the wine will evolve and last for a very, very, very long time in bottle ... Score: 100 (Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com, Aug. 30, 2016)

PEARL MORISSETTE CUVÉE MADELINE CABERNET FRANC 2013
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment

459164 (D) 750mL $44.20

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Cuvée Madelaine is a stunner of a wine, beautifully aromatic, fully ripe but still within the exotically spicy-herbal range of cabernet franc, extremely floral-violet perfumed, with old wood spice. The palate is still tight and gently astringent, with elegant, fine-grained tannins but firm, and acids to match - it will take some time to unwind and soften no doubt. Length and depth are excellent. A very pretty, silky-elegant wine despite the tannic impact, dynamic and vivid. 12.2% alcohol; 60% whole cluster, fermented in open top concrete, aged in mostly old wood, 10% new. Tasted October 2016. Score: 92 (John Szabo, MS, winealign.com, Oct. 6, 2016)

ANGOVE THE MEDHYK OLD VINE SHIRAZ 2014
McLaren Vale, South Australia

437749 (XD) 750mL $70.00

TASTING NOTE: Hand-picked, destemmed to open fermenters, plunged/trodden, basket-pressed to French oak, tasted at 9 months, the best matured for a further 6 months. Deeply coloured, it has the power of a Rolls Royce, but shares the smooth as silk delivery of that power; blackberries, poached plum, star anise and licorice are perfectly framed and presented by quality French oak, now perfectly integrated. Score: 97 (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, Oct. 6, 2016)

BERESFORD MCLAREN VALE ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014
Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, South Australia

525626 (XD) 750mL $55.00

TASTING NOTE: Firm and brooding with black berried fruit stuffed into every corner. If you're looking for a substantial red then this would be a top choice. It tastes of blackberry, cloves, redcurrant and musk, the latter character evident in the floral note to the bouquet too. Terrific value. Drink By: 2034. Special Value. Score: 95 (Campbell Mattinson, winecompanion.com.au, Oct. 6, 2016)

CLARENDON HILLS ROMAS GRENACHE 2008
Clarendon, South Australia

963686 (XD) 750mL $74.00

TASTING NOTE: Dense, complex, powerful and surprisingly light-footed, this packs ripe blueberry, cherry, exotic spice and tea leaf flavors into a supple package that glides easily into the long, expressive finish. Shows tremendous depth and excitement, but feels graceful. Drink now through 2020. Highly Recommended. Score: 96 (Harvey Steiman, winespectator.com, Aug. 31, 2013)

GREYWACKE PINOT NOIR 2014
Marlborough, South Island

402651 (XD) 750mL $50.00

TASTING NOTE: Medium ruby colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir exudes lovely floral notes of roses and lavender with a core of cranberries and red currants, plus hints of Provence herbs and fragrant earth. Light to medium-bodied, soft, elegant and filled with earthy/perfumed flavor layers, it delivers great expression and poise. Drink Date: 2016-2022. Score: 93 (MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator, May 31, 2017)

ESK VALLEY WINEMAKERS RANGE SYRAH 2013
Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, North Island

533984 (XD) 750mL $60.00

TASTING NOTE: Fermented in open-top concrete fermenters (unusual in NZ, common in the Rhône). Intense, rich Syrah - plum, berry and exotic spice flavours with a more savoury, roasted coffee influence. A weighty red with a long finish. Drinking Window: 2015-2024. Score: 97 (Bob Campbell, MW, decanter.com, Sept. 10, 2015)

MULLINEUX SYRAH 2015
Unfiltered and unfined, WO Swartland

246553 (XD) 750mL $47.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Syrah includes two additional vineyards on granite soils after the 2015, whilst the whole bunch component is back up to 60%. It has a clean and precise bouquet with floral-tinged red berry fruit (red cherry and wild strawberry), nicely focused and developing more intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, fine structure, much more detail than the 2014 and I think that is down to the higher whole bunch proportion, the sense of energy flowing through on the long finish. Drink Date: 2018-2030. Score: 93 (Neal Martin, robertparker.com, April 28, 2017)

ALTA VISTA ALIZARINE SINGLE VINEYARD MALBEC 2012
Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza

119834 (D) 750mL $54.00

TASTING NOTE: Right away this pitch-dark Malbec displays max ripeness through a dynamic mix of prune, blackberry, coconut, violet petal and leathery aromas. A hugely concentrated palate is hardly a shock, while firm acidity cuts a viscous palate with ripe cassis, plum, blackberry and black cherry flavors. Drink this voluptuous wine through 2022. Editors' Choice. Score: 94 (Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 1, 2015)

CASARENA ICONO 2012
Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza

515957 (XD) 750mL $99.00

TASTING NOTE: There is a new red that goes straight to the top of the range ... Malbec represents 60% of the blend, and is fermented in whole clusters in open oak barrels. The rest is destemmed Cabernet Sauvignon that ferments in rolling oak barrels. The wines are blended before malolactic fermentation which is carried out in cement vats. The wine is then put back in barrel where it matured for 18 months. It's very floral and there are no oak aromas. With time the wine develops unusual aromas reminiscent of green tea ... The wine is medium-boded, with very fine tannins and refreshing acidity. It even makes you salivate, which is a triumph for location and vintage. 4,500 bottles produced. Drink date: 2015-2020. Score: 95 (Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com, Aug. 27, 2015)

TENSLEY COLSON CANYON VINEYARD SYRAH 2015
Santa Barbara County

537928 (XD) 750mL $72.00

TASTING NOTE: Another highlight, the 2015 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard brings together so many of the elements that make Tensley's Syrahs so compelling. Intense in its aromatics and palate feel, the 2015 hits all the right notes. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, raspberry jam and a dollop of French oak are some of the signatures. Because of the low yields, the new oak is a bit high in 2015, but all the elements are very nicely married. The Colson Canyon is shaping up to be another gem from Joey Tensley. Score: 94-97 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Sept. 2016)

JOSEPH PHELPS FREESTONE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR 2014
Sonoma Coast

128264 (XD) 750mL $74.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyard is a blend from Phelps' Pastorale and Quarter Moon sites. Aged 14 months in 35% new French oak, and made from a bevy of Dijon clones as well as the Mt. Eden (believed to be from the Musigny vineyard), this is a big production cuvée of 11,600 cases. The wine has a dark ruby color and a big, sweet kiss of strawberries, raspberries, tart cherries and pomegranate as well as some loamy soil notes, followed by a juicy, medium-bodied mouthfeel and crisp, zesty finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Drink Date: 2016-2024. Score: 90 (Robert Parker Jr., robertparker.com, Oct. 28, 2016)

KATHRYN HALL CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014
Napa Valley

331140 (XD) 750mL $280.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall has an opaque purple color, beautiful licorice, chocolate and espresso notes intermixed with creme de cassis and blackberry. This is a beauty, with full-bodied power, stunning purity and a long finish. It should turn out to be sensational. Drink 2017-2030+. Score: 93-96 (Robert Parker Jr., robertparker.com, Dec. 30, 2015)

O'SHAUGHNESSY NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014
Napa Valley

534552 (XD) 750mL $130.00

TASTING NOTE: O'Shaughnessy's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is one of the very best values readers will find in top-notch Napa Valley Cabernet. A host of dark red cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather and tobacco give the 2014 a good deal of aromatic complexity to balance the natural richness of the year. Unlike the single-vineyard Cabernets, the Napa Valley bottling will drink well pretty much upon release. This is an absolutely impeccable Cabernet Sauvignon from O'Shaughnessy and winemaker Sean Capiaux. Drinking window: 2018-2026. Score: 94 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Dec. 2016)

HALL EIGHTEEN SEVENTY-THREE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013
Napa Valley

534537 (XD) 750mL $129.00

TASTING NOTE: As for the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon 1873, this is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon generally from eastern Napa Valley hillside vineyards. Multi-dimensional, with tremendous concentration and richness, this wine has a dense purple color, unctuously thick, juicy, yet well-balanced crème de cassis, blackberry and blueberry flavors, a floral component, and a long, powerful finish. This is a classic stunner from this great vintage in Napa, and while approachable now, it won't hit its prime for another 5-6 years and then evolve for 25-30 or more. Drink Date: 2021-2051. Napa Valley

534800 (XD) 750mL $104.00

TASTING NOTE: True elegance. Intense floral aromas with a lovely purity of cassis fruit. It is lean, sleek and lifted with great poise. There is impeccable balance here, with no element in excess. Drink: 2017-2030. Score: 95 (Decanter, Feb. 2017)

MICHAEL DAVID LUST ZINFANDEL 2013
Lodi

471631 (D) 750mL $99.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Zinfandel Lust is a whopper (16.9% natural alcohol), but with pure, rich, full-bodied black cherry fruit, incense, camphor and a touch of toasty oak. It is concentrated, thick and juicy. This is a big, powerful, heady wine that, remarkably, is not the least bit hot or overripe in spite of rather incredible levels of potency. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Drink Date: 2016-2024. Score: 93 (Robert Parker Jr., robertparker.com, March 30, 2016)

VARNER UPPER PICNIC PINOT NOIR 2013
Santa Cruz Mountains, Central Coast

524157 (XD) 750mL $80.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Pinot Noir Upper Picnic is endowed with a real sense of explosive energy that elevates it in this range. The flavors are dark and intense throughout, but it is the wine's center and overall depth that are most compelling at this stage. Still quite primary, the Upper Picnic could use a few years in bottle to enter the sweet spot. The Upper Picnic offers a compelling interplay of intensity and freshness. These own-rooted vines were planted in 1981. Drinking window: 2018-2025. Score: 94 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, July 2016)

FLOWERS CAMP MEETING RIDGE VINEYARD CHARDONNAY 2013
Sonoma Coast

287870 (XD) 750mL $150.00

TASTING NOTE: Orange peel, smoke, spices, mint and apricot pit flesh out in the 2013 Chardonnay Camp Meeting Ridge Vineyard. Bold and textured in its flavors but classically mid-weight in style, the 2013 captures a hugely attractive middle ground. Drinking window: 2016-2023. Score: 92-94 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Jan. 2015)

HARTFORD COURT STONE COTE VINEYARD CHARDONNAY 2013

528059 (XD) 750mL $99.00

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Chardonnay Stone Cote Vineyard (from Durell) is rich, sumptuous and layered, with attractive floral, honeyed overtones and plenty of orchard fruits. Hints of orange peel, lemon oil, hazelnuts, spices and butter add further dimensions of nuance on the finish. The 2013 stands out for its voluptuous, inviting personality and silky finish. Drinking window: 2015-2023. Score: 92-94 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Jan. 2015)

ELK COVE CLAY COURT PINOT NOIR 2014
Willamette Valley

402263 (XD) 750mL $74.00

TASTING NOTE: A standout among the winery's single-vineyard selections, this big-boned effort brings flavors of chewy cherry alongside a citrus highlight and a definite underpinning of wet stone and clay. Texturally compelling, it should age gracefully through 2024. Score: 93 (Paul Gregutt, Wine Enthusiast, Aug. 1, 2016)

EVENING LAND LA SOURCE PINOT NOIR 2014
Seven Springs Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills

239996 (XD) 750mL $136.00

KOPKE COLHEITA PORT 1957
DOC

63677 (S) 750mL $348.00

TASTING NOTE: It is stunning how youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening, it has mature flavors that emerge, easily demonstrating the complexity and concentrated aromatics one expects. Gripping on the finish, this delivers fruit flavor and seems to linger indefinitely. When I first saw this, it was tasted next to even more brilliant Colheitas and a bit overshadowed. On its own, it is even more stunning. It was pretty fine next to some other greats here as well. Score: 95 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, March 3, 2016)

TAYLOR FLADGATE 40-YEAR-OLD TAWNY PORT
DOP

540260 (S) 750mL $240.00

TASTING NOTE: Taylor Fladgate 40 Year Old is made with estate fruit in miniscule quantities. This is the essence of port from its spicy (cinnamon) nutty nose to its ultra complex collection of scents and flavours. On the palate the attack is mellow and silky smooth - it doesn't age in wood for forty years for nothing. The flavours are strong and nutty reminiscent of figs, raisins, caramel, dried apricots, orange peel and brown sugar. The finish is a long, soft warm complex affair that never really seems to go away that is drier than you might think. Buy and hold or drink now with a nutty cake dessert. A fabulous experience. Tasted July 2015. Score: 96 (Anthony Gismondi, winealign.com, July 2015)

WELLINGTON 20-YEAR-OLD V.O.S PALO CORTADO SHERRY
DO

535450 (XD) 500mL $66.00

TASTING NOTE: A clean, racy style, with almond and hazelnut husk notes backed by toasted corn, walnut and singed sandalwood accents. A touch of dried persimmon echoes on the very dry finish. Drink now. 84 cases made. Score: 91 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, Oct. 31, 2013)
