JANUARY 2018

11 VINTAGES

SPAIN

RED WINE

CARODORUM SELECCIÓN

ESPECIAL RESERVA 2012

DO Toro

(Carmen Rodríguez)

TASTING NOTE: Ripe aromas of fig,

blackberry and cassis are softened and

sweetened by a slathering of oaky

chocolate and vanilla. This is full, layered,

intense and cushioned on the palate, with

rich flavors of chocolaty black fruits and

baking spices. A toasty, everlasting finish

is heady but ideally balanced. Drink

through 2023. Editors’ Choice. Score:

96

URBINA GRAN RESERVA

ESPECIAL 1994

DOCa Rioja

TASTING NOTE: The 1994 Gran Reserva

Especial (from a great vintage) is medium

ruby colored with a lovely bouquet of cherry

blossom, earth notes, spice box, leather,

black cherry, and plum. On the palate it is

multifaceted, elegant, concentrated,

impeccably balanced, and holding strong.

It should drink nicely for another 10-

15 years if not longer. Drink 2010-2025.

RED WINE

CLONAKILLA O’RIADA SHIRAZ 2015

Canberra District

TASTING NOTE: A strikingly fragrant and

perfumed effort from Clonakilla, this

wine captures you instantaneously. It is

superbly constructed, aromatically

fragrant, perfumed and darkly fruited;

on the palate spice, superfine tannins

and then the finish that just lingers and

expands. Drink By: 2040. Score:

BY FARR FARRSIDE

PINOT NOIR 2014

Geelong, Victoria

TASTING NOTE: Clones 114, 115,

667 and MV6, hand-picked and sorted,

60-70% destemmed, 4 days cold soak,

wild-fermented, pigeaged 2-3 times

daily, matured for 18 months in French

oak (50-60% new). Good colour; the

bouquet, while complex, is the calm

before the storm of the palate, which

strikes the second the wine enters the

mouth, and doesn’t abate until long after

the wine has gone from the glass. Great

fusion of plum/black cherry fruit with a

savoury carpet of spices and sweet earth.

Drink By: 2029. Special Value. Score:

LANE VINEYARD REUNION

SINGLE VINEYARD SHIRAZ 2014

Adelaide Hills

TASTING NOTE: 5% whole bunches,

95% destemmed, 30% held on skins for

7 weeks extended maceration post-

ferment, matured French oak ranging

from barriques to demi-muids (35% new)

for 16 months. An exercise in elegance

from start to finish. There is an airy

lightness to the way the wine reaches into

every corner of the mouth in the same

fashion as the fragrance of the bouquet.
