THE CLASSICS COLLECTION

JANUARY 2018

12 VINTAGES

WHITE WINE

BROKENWOOD ILR RESERVE

SEMILLON 2011

Hunter Valley

TASTING NOTE: When I first tasted this

wine in Oct ’15 I made this note: Has the

green tinge to its colour that always

excites me. It has a lovely combination of

lemongrass freshness with perfect first

stage development of sweet fruit and

incipient honey (which will take years to

fully evolve). In the meantime, citrus rules

the roost, allied with mouthwatering

acidity. Now 15 months down the track,

the honey is a little more obvious, but the

all-important acidity remains the spine of

the wine, and always will. Drink by: 2031.

PINOT NOIR 2014

TASTING NOTE: Exciting bouquet –

immensely floral with wild flowers, wild

red berries, warm summer air and

intensely mineral. Fresh, crunchy, juicy

palate, dry stone, dusty clay, abundant

tannins, complex, long finish. Drink:

RED WINE

LAPOSTOLLE LE PETIT CLOS

RED BLEND 2014

Colchagua Valley

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 ‘Le Petit Clos’

is a simply fascinating wine composed

of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30%

Carmenére, 28% Merlot and 2% Petit

Verdot which spent 18 months in new

225L French oak for 8 months, followed by

an additional 18 months in a combination

of new and seasoned French oak barrels

and vats. While its name suggests this may

be something “petit”, that couldn’t be

further from the case for this majestic red,

as it bursts opens with profound aromas

of blackberries and dark currants woven

together with spices, cedar, spring floral,

chocolate, roasted coffee and hints of

loamy notes. This palate is remarkably

dense and concentrated, with plush layers

of ripe dark fruits, spices and cedar notes

building on the long multidimensional

finish. A simply incredible wine, which is

simply delicious now, yet possesses the

potential to thrive in the cellar for many

years. (Best 2017-2029). Score:

RED WINE

HARTFORD COURT

LAND’S EDGE VINEYARDS

PINOT NOIR 2014

Sonoma Coast

TASTING NOTE: The only 2014 tasted

was the early-bottled 2014 Pinot Noir

Land’s Edge Vineyards, which come from

a vineyard four miles from the Pacific

Ocean. Aged in 32% new French oak,

the wine displays raspberry and blue-

berry fruit, damp earth, fresh porcini

mushrooms and plenty of minerality. This

is a juicy, tightly knit, but concentrated

and promising Pinot Noir that has that

forward fruit of this vintage well displayed.

CLOS PEGASE

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014

Napa Valley

Founded in 1983, Clos Pegase has long

been a go-to producer for expertly

crafted, classically styled Napa Cabernet

Sauvignon. This one is from the highly

regarded 2014 vintage. Antonio Galloni

called Napa’s 2014s “… aromatically

expressive, rich and energetic, with

striking balance and plenty of potential”

(

vinous.com

, June 2015). William Kelley

of

Decanter

said the 2014 Cabernets

show “… supple, dark fruit … depth and

energy …” and called them “… drinkable,

charming wines

” (
