NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand has carved out a distinct identity in the global wine scene
with an unmatched national commitment to premium quality
wines. New Zealand’s winemakers have set themselves
apart with their specialized viticulture and winemaking
practices. Having exploded onto the scene with Sauvignon
Blanc, the Kiwis continue to succeed by carefully matching
grape varieties to the most suitable vineyard sites. New
Zealand’s increasing diversity is well worth discovering and
its winemakers have certainly earned their reputation
for achieving such exceptional quality.

SPINYBACK PINOT NOIR 2006
Nelson, South Island
(Waimea Estates)
The lizard-like Tautara (a.k.a. Spinyback) is native to New Zealand. Apparently, it's the last living dinosaur! Waimea Estates donates 5 cents of every bottle sold to help protect this unique species. Showing sour cherry, toasty oak and spicy characteristics, this lighter-style Pinot Noir from Nelson is ready to drink and would be perfect served lightly chilled along with some light summer fare.

HOUSE OF NOBILO ICON PINOT NOIR 2006
Central Otago, South Island
TASTING NOTE: Deep in colour, dark ruby with an almost opaque centre. Vanillin oak, cherries and sweet spices on the nose and rich, succulent, savoury flavours with slightly chunky velvety tannins, fruitcake spice, hints of milk chocolate and an earthy, brooding, mushroomy undercurrent. Full-bodied, tasty and long with a citrussy tang to the finish, it's very appealing from the outset. Matured in new and seasoned French oak for 12 months. LOWBURN FERRY PINOT NOIR 2006
Central Otago, South Island
TASTING NOTE: Medium colour, which is a good thing with Pinot. You don't want your Pinot to look like Shiraz. Warm cherry and spice nose which is quite aromatic and fresh. The palate has a nice concentration of spicy berry and cherry fruit with good acidity keeping things very fresh, and giving a hint of plummy sourness to the finish. A bright, supple style with a fair bit of complexity and some structure, which makes me think it might age well over the next few years. Score - 90. (Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com, Sept. 16, 2007)

central otago
Once known for its mining industry, the new gold rush of Central
Otago is for Pinot Noir. At latitude 45ºS, this is the southernmost
wine-producing region in the world. Sheltered by mountains, this
inland area is New Zealand’s only wine region that has a continental
rather than a maritime climate. The hot, dry summers are
followed by short, cool autumns and cold winters. Early-ripening
Pinot Noir thrives in the steep and rocky terrain, achieving perfect
ripeness in the sunny summer days while developing its characteristic
crisp acidity during the cool evenings. Having found the
perfect environment to grow world-class Pinot, New Zealand’s
winemakers have applied their trademark focus to the region with
upwards of 70% of all vineyards planted with this variety.

PISA RANGE ESTATE BLACK POPLAR BLOCK PINOT NOIR 2005
Central Otago, South Island
TASTING NOTE: 2005 Pisa Range Estate Black Poplar Block is another densely built pinot, with considerable depth of ripe plum and dark, cherry flavour. [Fellow panelist Huon] Hooke described it as having a "complex nose, with briar, mulchy and dusty overtones. Rich fleshy palate. Concentrated yet elegant." I thought it finished a bit hot and dry, but saw there was rich flavour and body to match. The wine's beginning to come out of its shell but needs another year or two to show its best. Score - 94. WAITIRI CREEK PINOT NOIR 2006
Central Otago, South Island Established in 1994, Waitiri Creek is an 8 hectare, boutique-sized, family-owned vineyard. This hand-picked Pinot Noir has won several awards including Blue Gold at the Sydney International Wine Competition 2008. The judging panel for this prestigious competition tastes the wine with a specially prepared dish.
TASTING NOTE: Some red cherry aromas and nice delicate florals. Quite a pretty nose. Pretty wine in fact. Fine cherry fruits on the palate and a touch of juiciness. That juicy acidity really came in handy with the duck. (Paul White, Sydney International Wine Competition, www.top100wines.com, 2008)

SACRED HILL BASKET PRESS MERLOT 2006
Hawkes Bay, North Island
Sacred Hill strikes the perfect balance between winemaking tradition and innovation. Over the last two decades, they have used time-honoured techniques to handcraft exceptional wines all the while leading the industry with many environmental initiatives. Winemaker Tony Bish employed the traditional, hand-operated basket press to gently coax from the grapes the full flavours of this supple Merlot. A rich, plummy nose leads to a deep yet softly textured wine layered with ripe black fruit flavours and supported by gentle tannins.

COOPERS CREEK GRAVELS AND METALS MERLOT/CABERNET FRANC 2004
Hawkes Bay, North Island
TASTING NOTE: This is yet another impressive, Bordeaux-style red from the Hawkes Bay area of New Zealand. Everything is in its place, from the delicate red fruits to the rich and enticing toasty oak notes. Supple, elegant and without the excessively perfumed aromatics that spoil so many New Zealand wines for me. No matter what style of red you like, this will be a hit. Drink now-2010. Food pairing: Veal or pork roast with tamari. (Bill Zacharkiw, The Gazette (Montreal), March 15, 2008)

LAWSON'S DRY HILLS GEWÜRZTRAMINER 2006
Marlborough, South Island
TASTING NOTE: This is consistently one of the country's most impressive Gewürztraminers ... The 2006 vintage is ripely scented and weighty with a deliciously soft texture and rich, citrusy, spicy flavours. Slightly sweet, it is still very fresh and youthful. More subtle than some Gewürztraminers, it is developing good complexity with bottle-age. Score - (out of 5). (Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines, 2008)
