Meet the Pinots

There is Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and the ancient grape variety, Pinot Noir, which is generally held to be the mother of them all. VINTAGES warmly welcomes you into the branch of the family that shares the Pinot name. These wines can and will reward cellaring, yet are remarkably enjoyable in their youth. A delight at the dinner table, you will also find that Pinots are just really fun to drink.

  change is good

Centuries of spontaneous genetic mutation and deliberate human intervention have created the diverse and versatile pinot grape.

A newly planted Pinot Noir vine will typically produce quality red grapes in its first few harvests. Makes sense, right? It is not unheard of, however, for the vine to eventually grow offshoots, one of which will produce white grapes! Growers and scientists believe this seemingly inexplicable occurrence has a logical explanation: Pinot Noir adapts to a specific location and its vines will mutate even into a white variety if it thinks its chances for survival will improve. These spontaneous mutations have resulted, directly or indirectly, in Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and even variations of Pinot Noir itself. No doubt other grapes, both white and red, will keep appearing as this legendary vine forever seeks its highest expression.

  european pinot noir

Pinot Noir and Burgundy is a match made in heaven. Burgundy’s limestone soils, moderately cool climates and just-right rainfall levels conspire to produce the best-quality wines from this demanding grape. An early-ripening variety, Pinot Noir will not reward a rush to maturity if there is too much heat. In fact, it will generally lose both aroma and acidity if the climate is too hot or too dry. When nurtured in model conditions in Burgundy, this expressive grape can produce wines ranging from dry, crisp, fruity, light-bodied quaffers to deeply coloured, vibrantly fruity, tannic wines that demand long bottle ageing. In other regions of France (e.g., Loire, Alsace) and Europe, characteristics vary depending on the terroir.

VINCENT SAUVESTRE BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR  2005
AC

The 2005 vintage is rightly being praised far and wide as one of the greatest for Burgundy. In a vintage of this high peerage, even the basic Bourgogne wines are great. Ripe fruits, great structure and the bonus of either current enjoyment or potential for cellar ageing (2-4 years) are possible with this fine wine from Vincent Sauvestre. A good partner for grilled ham, broiled stuffed chicken or poached salmon with fresh herbs.

send in the clones

While evolution occurs naturally in the vineyard, clonal selection is a process directly influenced by man. Growers harvest cuttings from superior plants that are often the result of a mutation. These cuttings are propagated, grafted to new rootstock and planted in ideal vineyard locations, thus introducing an exciting new variety (such as Pinot Gris) or variation (such as a slightly different version of Pinot Noir). The highly desirable qualities that these superior vine cuttings may exhibit include natural yield reduction; controlled berry size; disease resistance; an ability to withstand harsh conditions such as heat, cold, drought or excessive rainfall, etc. This propogation can often have a far reaching impact. Some clones, such as the various Dijon clones of Pinot Noir, are so successful that they are commercialized and sold to growers around the world.

LOUIS SIPP PINOT NOIR  2003
AC Alsace

Louis Sipp sources fruit from several vineyards around Ribeauvillé. The soils share a common bond of clay, silt and chalk. Coupled with a moderate climate, the grapes mature evenly and the yields are naturally reduced. From the warm 2003 vintage, this wine offers pretty aromas of cherry, raspberry, plum and beetroot. On the palate, it is remarkably ample with good structure to balance it out. Enjoy it with warm chicken salad or grilled salmon.

DOMAINE BONNARD SANCERRE ROUGE  2004
AC

When one thinks of Sancerre, one generally thinks Sauvignon Blanc. Red Sancerres are made in very limited quantities and always with Pinot Noir. When handled properly, such as this fine example from Domaine Bonnard, the results can be downright beguiling. Classic aromas of cherry, beetroot, underbrush and blackberry dominate. The fruit, crisp acids and fine tannins give this dry Sancerre Rouge dimension. Try it with lamb chops and mint sauce.

MIGUEL TORRES MAS BORRÀS PINOT NOIR  2006
DO Penedès

The fruit for this Pinot Noir is sourced exclusively from the small Mas Borràs vineyard where yields are kept very low to concentrate the fruit flavours. Aged in new Nevers French oak barriques for several months, it is rich with violet, cocoa, pomegranate, raspberry and earth aromas. The bright fruit flavours are brought into focus by clean tannins and a mild acidity. A terrific match now for bison steaks or other game meats but it will also cellar for up to 10 years.

pinot blanc

Originally found in Burgundy’s vineyards, where it is sometimes still used in AC Bourgogne or Mâcon whites, Pinot Blanc’s home base today is Alsace. It is here that the finest versions in France are to be found. In the New World, its best successes have been achieved in British Columbia where the hot days and cool evenings create flavourful wines. The Germans and Austrians have also had great fortune producing Pinot Blanc, while the Italians continue to create fine examples from the grape under the name Pinot Bianco.

the pinot blanc story

Pinot Blanc is often mistaken in the vineyard for its famous brother Chardonnay (yes, another relation!) due to the similarity of its grape bunches and leaf-shape. The delicate, wrapped-invelvet aromas of Pinot Blanc hold the promise of something enticing and deliver it on the palate. This white is a terrific partner for western or eastern foods such as stuffed roast chicken or sashimi.

pinot gris/grigio

Pinot Gris has a dual identity when it comes to its aroma and flavour profile. In Alsace, where it reaches its ultimate expression, Pinot Gris can produce spicy, pear-scented, “super-rich, usually dry [although off-dry versions are on the rise], wines that can be partnered with food without the distraction of too much aroma”. (Jancis Robinson, Oxford Companion to Wine, 2006) In Italy, where it goes by the penne nome Pinot Grigio, it can be aromatic on the nose but quite racy and fresh on the palate. In the New World, many wineries use the name Gris or Grigio depending on what style of wine they are emulating.

the pinot gris story

A direct relative of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris is an unusual white grape in that its skin can range in colour from greyish/blue to brownish/pink, sometimes within the same cluster. If given skin contact, the wines can take on a very slight pink hue. In the vineyard, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir can sometimes look the same. In fact, in some of Burgundy’s vineyards, these grapes grow side by side.

the champagne connection

Traditionally, Champagne is made by blending Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Champagnes labelled Blanc de Noirs are made with only the red grapes. Unless making a rosé champagne, the wines are allowed little or no skin contact, thus creating a white sparkling wine. Pinot Meunier is always the junior partner in most champagnes, yet, it is the most widely planted grape in the region.

MIGUEL TORRES PINOT NOIR BRUT RESERVA DE LA FAMILIA
Chile, Méthode Traditionnelle

Though not officially organic, these Torres vineyards are not treated with insecticides, weedkillers or fungicides. Since Chile has never been hit by the devastating phylloxera aphid, the Pinot Noir used for this fine fizz is on its original rootstock, something they cannot say in Champagne. As a result, Torres suggests that their sparkling wine is a "uniquely distinctive Brut, in the style of those made by the, now sadly vanished, European vineyards of 18th and 19th century".
