Prince Edward County
Surrounded by North America’s largest freshwater lake and
sand-dunes system, Prince Edward County, known locally as
“the County”, is the newest official addition to Ontario’s VQA
winegrowing regions. Located two hours east of Toronto, southwest
of Kingston, the once-quiet countryside is now bustling
with activity. Quaint cottage-feel wineries crafting elegant and
lively wines dot the landscape while upscale restaurants
showcasing the remarkable local wines and fresh produce are
thriving. The warming effect of Lake Ontario makes vine growing
possible here, but it is the desirable limestone soils, similar to
Burgundy’s, that attract passionate winemakers to settle in the area. |

HUFF ESTATES SOUTH BAY CHARDONNAY 2006
VQA Ontario
Huff's cellar, only four years old, is modern and minimalist. The sleek concrete structure houses a high-tech operation of monstrous stainless-steel vats and traditional barrels that together are used to produce classic Bordeaux varieties such as merlot and cabernet franc as well as more traditional white wines such as chardonnay, riesling and pinot gris. The estate has won numerous medals over the years, and its 2004 chardonnay was named the official wine of the Ontario Legislature for 2005-06. ROSEHALL RUN CABERNET FRANC 2006
VQA Ontario
TASTING NOTE: This is Cabernet Franc in a lighter style. It has almost classic Cab Franc flavours, with well-paced fruit and moderate complexity. If it doesn't have the depth and intensity of many of the best Ontario examples of the variety, it attains a nice level of subtlety and it will go well with more delicate foods. Score - 1/2 (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, rodphillipsonwine.com, Feb. 28, 2008)
