MER SOLEIL CHARDONNAY  2005
Central Coast, Barrel Fermented

TASTING NOTE: Charlie Wagner II has a deft touch with the sumptuous Chardonnay fruit from Monterey County. The wine is beautifully balanced with honeyed ripe apple aromas and flavors, spicy notes, and the subtle texture of barrel fermentation. There are hints of ripe pear and honey in the flavors, and the wine finishes with length, balance, and great texture. If you're bored with over-oaked Chardonnays, Mer Soleil is the way to go.  Score - 90. (Gerald D. Boyd, www.winereviewonline.com,
July 17, 2007)

Quinta Generación celebrates the Silva family's five generations of winemaking in Chile. Here's a pretty blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah and Petit Verdot that offers a Chilean twist on the classic Bordeaux blend by using Syrah instead of Cabernet Franc. The result is a round and nicely textured wine with aromas of plum, blackberry, pipe tobacco and bell pepper. This is a wine for a rare leg of lamb

TORBRECK WOODCUTTER'S SHIRAZ  2006
Barossa Valley, South Australia

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Woodcutter's Shiraz was sourced from six sub-regions of the Barossa. The wine was aged for 12 months in large, neutral French oak and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Purple-colored, it has an attractive array of pepper, spicy blackberry, black cherry, and blueberry muffin aromas. Full-bodied and opulent on the palate, the wine delivers gobs of meaty, full-flavored blue and black fruits to accompany its forward, easy-going personality. FAIRVIEW VIOGNIER  2006
WO Coastal Region

TASTING NOTE: Lauded example of the fashionable Rhône variety. Nothing overt in 06, shows the class variety can deliver in good hands: wafting jasmine, peach pip perfume partnering savoury oak notes Majority fermented [for] 4 mths [in] seasoned barrels ... elegant, poised.  Score - (out of 5). SIMONSIG FRANS MALAN  2003
WO Stellenbosch

TASTING NOTE: (45% each pinotage and cabernet sauvignon, with 10% merlot) Full ruby. Primal nose combines blackberry, licorice and spices. Rich, fat and chewy, with candied black fruit flavors complicated by intense spiciness and a whiff of raw meat. This is lush on entry, but firm acidity keeps it fresh throughout. A big and compellingly sweet wine with a very long, broad finish featuring black fruits and licorice. A great showing for this Cape blend.  Score - 91. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, March/April 2007)

SAXENBURG GUINEA FOWL  2004
WO Stellenbosch

TASTING NOTE: Saxenburg Guinea Fowl 2004 is another long-time personal favourite ... The Guinea Fowl is basically a Cape Meritage-style blend, mostly Merlot in this vintage, plus about equal parts Cabernet and Shiraz. Couldn't get enough of the '03 back then, and the current offering is every bit as appealing: beautifully balanced, with lots of chocolate and coffee flavours among the smoky fruit. Satisfaction all around with this one, especially when it came dinner time. (Jurgen Gothe, www.straight.com, Nov. 8, 2007)

DOMAINE DES ORME CUVÉE AZUR  2005
AC Côtes du Roussillon
(Georges Rossignol, Vign. Récolt.)

It's not surprising that Roussillon, bordered by Spain to the south and west and the Mediterranean sea to the east, enjoys an average of 325 days of sunshine a year! There is much excitement today about its dry wines, particularly modern, flavourful reds like this blend of Carignan (60%), Mourvèdre (30%) and Syrah (10%). The ripe red fruit and cassis flavours are counter-balanced by brooding notes of leather and toasty oak. It's dry, full-bodied with good depth and supple tannins. A great choice for barbecued or roasted meats.

The fine-grained finish really stretches out, boding well for moderate cellaring. Syrah and Grenache. Drink now through 2008.  Score - 90. (James Molesworth, www.winespectator.com, May 31, 2007)

QUINTA DE VENTOZELO LBV PORT  1998
Btld. in 2002

TASTING NOTE: Now on the cutting edge, after massive investment of millions of Euros, this historically-important house is producing world class product. Intense aromas of chocolate, licorice and dried fruit blast from the glass. The hugely-flavoured nectar is reminiscent of fruit cake spice, Bing cherries and black licorice. This was (full bunch) foot trodden and left unfiltered. Decant and drink with huge chunks of Belgian dark chocolate. Will warm up a cold snowy evening.  Score - (out of 5).
