ANGELS GATE WINERY
You wouldn’t think someone
trained in Australia would come
with experience in cool-climate
viticulture but Philip Dowell did,
drawing on his time most notably
at Coldstream Hills Winery in
Victoria’s Yarra Valley. In 1998, he
moved to Canada to become
General Manager of Inniskillin and
was instrumental in the Ontario
wine industry’s quality revolution.
After a brief stint back in
Australia, Dowell returned to
Canada, galvanized by Ontario’s
growing international reputation
and set about establishing
Angels Gate as one of Ontario’s
top-tier wineries.
“With each vintage, more
and more Canadian
wine is standing up to the
international competition
and this makes it very
exciting and rewarding
to be here.”
Angels Gate Cab is made in an elegant, well-structured style. Almost Bordeaux-like, it is a medium-bodied wine with flavours of dark fruit, cedar and hints of chocolate. The medium firm tannins make it a good choice for some short- to mid-term cellaring, or enjoy now with a rare steak or rack of lamb.
