BORDEAUX FUTURES 2006 – VINTAGE EXCELLENCE
VINTAGES has a long tradition of offering the very best of each
Bordeaux vintage. This is especially true with the 2006 Futures.
The near-perfect 2005 vintage is a very tough act to follow. Never
ones to shy away from a challenge, the Bordelais responded
brilliantly to the difficulties of the 2006 vintage and have created
some extraordinary wines. “Only forensic attention to detail produced
great wines in 2006,” observed Decanter’s Steven Spurrier.
Those who practised extensive green harvesting during the year,
unusually restrictive bunch picking at harvest and methodical
selection of final blend lots, produced wines that were very special
indeed. Robert Parker Jr., Stephen Tanzer and Wine Spectator’s
James Suckling all agreed that those who reaped the greatest
rewards relied on these stringent, not to mention costly, measures.
“2006 appears to be a modern-day version of 1996 or 1986, two
vintages that produced wines with high percentages of Cabernet
Sauvignon in their blends, strong tannins, and, in the best cases,
impressive concentration,” wrote Robert Parker in April of this
year. He added, “The Pomerols are excellent across the board ...
[they] will be gorgeous wines to drink young, but the best of
them will age well. Moreover, a handful of true blockbusters were
produced from vineyards where much of the harvest took place
before the heavy rains arrived in mid September”. Tanzer noted: “It's a classic year in which many very good to excellent wines
have been made, and even some I would describe as outstanding.
The best wines, especially those based on cabernet sauvignon,
are built to enjoy a long life”. Spurrier offered the following praise: “‘Classic’ is now an outmoded word, so the firm structure of
the Left Bank 2006s is described as ‘what Bordeaux is all about’.
The dry whites are quite exceptional and the sweet whites lively
and attractive.”
“I agree with Parker regarding Pomerol,” commented VINTAGES Vice
President, Tom Wilson. “Pomerol is the star appellation in 2006
as, fortunately, most producers picked their Merlot before the rains
came. On the Left Bank, I was very impressed with the two
Léovilles (Las Cases and Barton) plus the Pontet-Canet, Lynch-
Bages, Cos d’Estournel and Haut-Bailly, amongst several others.”

“Below the highest level, knowledge is key,” counselled Steven
Spurrier. To this end, Tom Wilson and Shari Mogk-Edwards, VINTAGES
Director of Sales and Purchasing each spent a week in Bordeaux. “The wines we tasted were diverse in character and quality
which made selection very challenging,” explained Shari Mogk-
Edwards. “After evaluating over 500 wines, we believe we have
provided an outstanding assortment of the finest Bordeaux from
2006, including superb dry whites as well as wines of exceptional
value. Admittedly, volume for the top chateaux is down considerably
so we leveraged our relationships with the Bordeaux trade to
secure a significant depth of inventory of these top wines,” noted
Mogk-Edwards.

What are Bordeaux Futures?
VINTAGES Bordeaux Futures program is a great way to buy topquality
Bordeaux wines at exceptional prices before they are
released in the retail market.
Bordeaux Futures may seem complicated. In a nutshell, what
you need to know is that in the year following the vintage, after
the wines have been tasted by VINTAGES buyers and members
of the trade and reviewed by the wine critics, a large portion is
sold in advance to consumers and slated for delivery after two
years of ageing in oak casks. In other words, wines purchased
now from the 2006 vintage will be delivered to you in 2009.
Of course, you could wait to make purchases off the shelves in
late 2009 but the selection and availability will be very limited
and retail prices may be higher.
Bordeaux Futures offerings include everything from up and
coming châteaux to illustrious producers such as Latour,
Margaux, Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Haut-Brion,
Pétrus, Cheval Blanc, Ausone, amongst many others. Some of
these wines are produced in very small quantities and
are often only available as Futures. With increasing global
demand for top-quality Bordeaux wines, especially in Russia,
China and India, buying Bordeaux Futures is the best way
to secure these wines.
Savvy Bordeaux buyers also know that many famous houses
craft ‘second’ wines using the same winemaker, technique
and vineyard as their premier blend. These offer the consumer
a fantastic opportunity to try the wines of great houses at
much more affordable prices (see page 23 for listing).
VINTAGES offers a huge selection of Futures at prices that will fit
the budget of anyone from the beginner wine buyer to the
long-time collector. Look for our list of Smart Buys
for exceptional values.
