TASTING NOTES:  This property, which has come back strongly over recent vintages, has fashioned a tannic, virile, muscular, impressively endowed 2006 revealing a dense plum/ruby/purple hue, a distinctive earthy/licorice-scented nose, and plenty of black cherry, cassis, cedar, and spice notes. After 5-6 years of cellaring, it should keep for two decades or more. Score –  (91-94). (RP)

Round, lush, plump, and fleshy with low acidity, it should drink well for 15-20 years. Score –  (91-93). (RP)

CLINET

RP: 90-92       JR: 16.0       DEC: ****       ST: 88-91       SME: 8.9

TASTING NOTES:  Clinet seems to have come of age over the last several vintages. Another strong effort, the dark ruby/purple-hued 2006 offers sweet aromas of blueberries, plums, black cherries, smoke, and toasty oak. Opulent, medium to full-bodied and rich with a good tannic structure in the finish, this fleshy Pomerol will be accessible in 3-4 years and keep for 15-18+. Score –  (90-92). (RP)

GAZIN

RP: 90-92+       WS: 89-91       JR: 17-       DEC: ****       SME: 9.2

TASTING NOTES:  Often excessively woody in its youth, Gazin appears to have toned down the wood component, resulting in a more savory and balanced wine. The finest effort produced since 2001, the 2006 is a supple, concentrated, rich Pomerol offering up aromas of cedar, plums, black cherries, and subtle new oak. This opulent, dense, structured, big wine is another outstanding success from an appellation that excelled in 2006. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025. Score –  (90-92+). (RP)

HOSANNA
565408    (XD)  750 mL
$147.75 per btl    $443.25 per 3-btl. lot

RP: 95-97     WS: 92-94     JR: 17.0     DEC: ****    ST: 90-92      TJW: 9.4      SME: 9.2

TASTING NOTES:  Made from a vineyard that was harvested one day before the mid-September rains arrived, this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc exhibits a dense plum/purple color, a fabulous texture, and extraordinary opulence, concentration, and expansiveness. Tasting like it was made from an extremely ripe Right Bank vintage, this may be the finest Hosanna Christian Moueix has yet made, even eclipsing the 2005 and 2000. Given its low acidity and luxurious fruit, it should be ready to drink at a relatively early age. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020+. Score –  (95-97). (RP)

LA CONSEILLANTE
566042    (XD)  750 mL
$167.60 per btl    $502.80 per 3-btl. lot

RP: 92-95       WS: 92-94       JR: 17.5       DEC: ****       ST: 90-93       SME: 9.3

TASTING NOTES:  La Conseillante has been hitting on all cylinders over the last several vintages, and the 2006 may rival both the 2005 and 2000. Made in an atypical broad, fleshy style, it exhibits a dark ruby/purple hue, plenty of structure and tannin, but superb concentration. Usually a Burgundian-styled, elegant effort, the rich, well-textured 2006 is a bigger, more blockbuster example displaying a deep ruby/plum/purple color. It requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should last for two decades. Bravo! Drink 2009-2027. Score –  (92-95). (RP)

LA CROIX DE GAY

JR: 16.5       DEC: ***       TJW: 9.1       SME: 9.0

TASTING NOTES:  Mid crimson. Hint of buckwheat – simple sweetness. Slightly astringent. Hint of port. Very sweet and round and pure pleasure but perhaps for only the short term. The tannins are just fine. Drink 2011-16. Score –  (16.5). (JR)

LA CROIX ST-GEORGES
564914    (XD)  750 mL
$94.20 per btl    $282.60 per 3-btl. lot

RP: 94-96       JR: 15.5       TJW: 9.4       SME: 9.2

TASTING NOTES:  Another spectacular offering from young perfectionist Jean-Philippe Janouiex, this 2006 Pomerol (an appellation that appears to have hit the highest peaks of quality across the board) is a blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc cropped at a modest 29 hectoliters per hectare. Similar to the 2005, the natural alcohol achieved 13.6%. A stunningly dense plum/purple color offers up notes of scorched earth, blackberries, plums, sweet cherries, truffles, and chocolate. Full-bodied with considerable finesse, supple tannins, and a grilled meat-like character, this fleshy, full, opulent wine’s huge fruit and glycerin admirably cover its substantial tannins. This blockbuster Pomerol can be consumed between 2010-2025. Score –  (94-96). (RP)

LA FLEUR DE GAY
565945    (XD)  750 mL
$118.00  per btl    $354.00 per 3-btl. lot

RP: 91-94       WS: 85-88       JR: 17       ST: 89-91       TJW: 9.2

TASTING NOTES:  This 100% Merlot cuvee, from a 7.5-acre vineyard situated high on the plateau of Pomerol between Petrus and Lafleur, has turned out exceptionally well in 2006. It boasts a deep saturated blue/purple color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of graphite, blueberries, black raspberries, sweet cherries, and spicy, toasty oak, a luscious texture, sweet tannin, and impressive length. It should be approachable in 3-4 years and last for two decades. Drink 2010-2027. Score –  (91-94). (RP)

LA FLEUR-PÉTRUS
565390    (XD)  750 mL
$114.05per btl    $342.15 per 3-btl. lot

RP: 94-96+      WS: 92-94      JR: 17.5      DEC: ***    ST: 89-92       TJW: 9.3       SME: 9.0

TASTING NOTES:  One of the candidates for “wine of the vintage,” the 2006 is potentially the finest La Fleur Petrus made since the late forties. Harvested prior to the region’s first big rain in mid-September, from yields of 30-36 hectoliters per hectare, it possesses atypical power, thickness, and richness, as well as a superb perfume of flowers, melted licorice, scorched earth, and abundant black and red fruits. Great intensity, a full-bodied, multilayered opulence, beautiful purity, and tremendous length suggest this stunning 2006 will be at its apogee between 2012-2030+. Score –  (94-96+). (RP)

LA PROVIDENCE
565382    (XD)  750 mL

RP: 94-96       WS: 92-94       JR: 18.0       DEC: ****       TJW: 9.4       SME: 9.2

TASTING NOTES:  Christian Moueix’s newest baby has hit remarkable heights in 2006. Harvested largely before any rain fell on the vineyard in mid-September, it is off the charts in concentration. Atypical for the vintage, this seamless, velvety-textured, opulent, 100% Merlot cuvee (1,550 cases produced) is potentially one of the top dozen or so wines of the year. A sleeper of the vintage, it offers beautiful kirsch liqueur aromas interwoven with scents of truffles, licorice, and spice. This full-bodied, opulent, super-concentrated, stunning Pomerol will be drinkable for 20+ years. Drink 2007-2027. Score –  (94-96). (RP)

Score –  (95-100). (WS)

TASTING NOTES:  Mid crimson. Fresh, sweet, violets on the nose. Very smooth and succulent. Not a long-term player but very harmonious and confident. Very fine in traditional mould, but for relatively early drinking. Drink 2010-16. Score –  (17.0). (JR)

TASTING NOTES:  A deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by scents of vitamins, smoke, black fruits, and meats, moderately high tannin, impressive concentration, and plenty of structure. Forget this 2006 for 4-5 years, and drink it over the following two decades. Drink 2011-2031. Score –  (89-91). (RP)

Le Bon Pasteur
567396    (XD) 750 mL

RP: 90-92     WS: 85-88      JR: 15.5      DEC: ***

TASTING NOTES:  The irrepressible Michel Rolland and his wife, Dany, have turned out an outstanding 2006, a vintage that unquestionably favored Pomerol. Luscious mocha-infused cherry fruit, smoke, and earth aromas cascade from the glass of this round, generously endowed, medium to full-bodied Bon Pasteur. With good acidity, luscious fruit, and crisp freshness, it should drink well for 15 or more years. Drink 2007-2022. Score –  (90-92). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  This powerful, top-notch Pomerol boasts a dark ruby/purple color along with notes of beef blood, crushed rocks, cold steel, flowers, black currants, and cherries. Full-bodied and super-endowed, with substantial tannins largely concealed by superb fruit and extract, the 2006 Le Gay should be drinkable before the monster 2005. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030. Score –  (93-95). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  Potentially the wine of the vintage, proprietor Denis Durantou has fashioned a profound 2006 of great intensity and complexity. Its intense purple hue is accompanied by a glorious nose of melted red and black fruits, spring flowers, truffles, and spice. With massive concentration as well as intensity, but no hard edges, it is a tour de force in winemaking. Multilayered, with incredibly texture and purity as well as a finish that lasts over 60 seconds, this brilliant Pomerol should be accessible in 3-4 years, and last for three decades or more. Bravo! Drink 2010-2037. Score –  (96-98+). (RP)

L’ÉVANGILE
564682    (XD)  750 mL
$232.05 per btl    $696.15 per 3-btl. lot

RP: 92-94       WS: 89-91       JR: 18-       DEC: ****       SME: 9.3

TASTING NOTES:  Virtually every estate in this sector of Pomerol (the plateau adjacent to St.-Emilion) enjoyed a terrific 2006 vintage, so it is not surprising that the Rothschild-owned l’Evangile is a knock-out. Yields were a low 33 hectoliters per hectare, and 70% of the crop made it into the grand vin. The alcohol level of 14% is essentially equivalent to that of the 2005. A blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc harvested between September 13-29, it displays a deep ruby/purple color in addition to a sweet bouquet of chocolate, black currants, cherries, licorice, and incense. Velvety tannins, seemingly low acidity, but high concentration and richness make for a stunning wine. This beauty will be ready to drink in 3-5 years, and should keep for 20-25 years. Score –  (92-94). (RP)

NENIN
565465    (XD)  750 mL

WS: 89-91       JR: 17++       DEC: ***       TJW: 8.9       SME: 8.7

TASTING NOTES:  76% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, including 17% press wine. Only 20% new oak. 13.98%. Like Las Cases, this went into barrel early and therefore tastes especially gorgeous already. Mid crimson. Introvert nose with some complexity. Round and mellifluous – again the tannins are of a quite different quality from most Pomerols. Very supple. Nice freshness – much livelier than many earlier vintages of Nénin with real lift and souplesse. Congratulations! Very grown up. Briary but interesting and round and potentially long lived, I think. Drink 2013-20. Score –  (17++). (JR)

TASTING NOTES:  A racy second wine, showing some good blackberry and dark chocolate character. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long finish. A little hollow midpalate. Could improve. Score –  (85-88). (WS)

RP: 92-95    WS: 92-94       JR: 17.5       DEC: **** ST: 91-94       TJW: 9.3       SME: 9.1

TASTING NOTES:  A brilliant effort from this 60 plus acre vineyard run with perfection by proprietor Hubert de Bouard, the 2006 is a classic blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc. An inky/blue/purple color precedes a bouquet of charcoal, blueberries, blackberries, vanilla, and roasted coffee. Revealing no hardness from unripe tannin, it is an opulent, fleshy, sensationally rich effort with a fabulous texture as well as a long finish. Only slightly below the quality of the monumental 2005, the 2006 will be drinkable early, and should last for 20 years. The natural alcohol is approximately 14%. Score –  (92-95). (RP)

AUSONE
1er Grand Cru Classé (A)
566885    (XD) 750 mL
$1,239.45 per btl    $3,718.35 per 3-btl. lot

RP: 95-97     WS: 92-94     JR: 17.5++     DEC: ***** ST: 92-95     TJW: 9.4      SME: 9.2

TASTING NOTES:  The inky/blue-colored 2006 Ausone possesses a striking perfume of minerals, flowers, blackberries, and blueberries. Even though 100% new oak is utilized in the wine’s upbringing, there is no hint of wood in the aromas or flavors. Despite its fabulous texture, medium to full body, size, richness, and profound depth of flavor and nuance, it is surreal in its lightness and delicacy. Prospective purchasers should be aware that the 2006, a legend in the making, will require 10-12 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2050. Obsessive perfectionist proprietor Alain Vauthier’s extraordinary attention to detail in both the vineyard and cellar has resulted in virtually perfect wines in vintage after vintage. Ausone is a 50-year wine, and generations to come will regard them with almost mythical acclaim.
Score –  (95-97). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  While the 2006 does not measure up to the magnificent 2005, it is an outstanding effort offering aromas of sweet black cherries intermixed with pain grille, licorice, and smoke. Ripe, with excellent texture, medium to full body, and surprisingly silky tannin, it can be enjoyed over the next 12-14 years. Score –  (90-92). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  Bright crimson. Very earthy distinctive nose. The first wine juicy fruit but not at all sweet. Briary and marked acidity. Reasonably complete opulence on the nose, The first wine I have come across to taste of autumn undergrowth as well as ripe black fruits – cherries – which spread across the palate. A slow burner? Some good fresh acidity but a little bit of green astringency on the finish too. Very dry end. A bit lean on the finish. Drink 2014-20.

BELLEVUE

TASTING NOTES:  This terroir is superbly situated between Beausejour Duffau and Beau-Sejour-Becot, with Angelus within shouting distance. Bellevue has been managed by Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont since 2000, and when St.-Emilion does its next new classification (in 2016), I would not be surprised to see this estate upgraded to a premier grand cru classe. A blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, cropped at a remarkably low 30-36 hectoliters per hectare, the 2006 represents the essence of terroir with its crushed rock/steely notes intermixed with flower, black raspberry, cherry, and blackberry characteristics. It is a full-bodied, dense, rich, powerful, moderately tannic offering with a broad texture, sensational purity, and an exceptionally long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+. Score –  (92-94). TASTING NOTES:  This tiny (5 acres; 4,000 bottles produced) jewel is the ultimate vin de garage estate. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from 46-year old vines and incredibly low yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare, the 2006 flirts with perfection. It possesses amazing power, precision, elegance, purity, richness, and just about anything else anyone could desire in a young Bordeaux. It will require 5-6 years of bottle age, and should evolve for three decades or more. Bravo! Score –  (96-100). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  Stephan von Neipperg’s flagship estate (and, in my opinion, one that should have been upgraded to a premier grand cru classe in the new St.-Emilion hierarchy) has turned in another stunning performance. A blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, from small yields of 35 hectoliters per hectare, the 2006 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as scents of creme de cassis, pain grille, espresso roast, chocolate, and spicy roasted herbs. Dense, medium to full-bodied, and surprisingly opulent for a 2006, with oodles of fruit, and terrific structure as well as purity, it is a more noble expression of Neipperg’s other St.-Emilion, Clos de l’Oratoire. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024. Score –  (91-94). (RP)

CHAPELLE D’AUSONE
2nd Wine of Ch. Ausone

RP: 91-93       WS: 85-88       JR: 17+       DEC: **** ST: 88-91       TJW: 9.1      SME: 9.2

TASTING NOTES:  Ausone’s second wine, La Chapelle d’Ausone, is better than most Ausone cuvees were in the fifties, sixties, and seventies. Made in the style of its bigger sibling, but with softer tannin and not nearly the sublime concentration, the 2006 reveals aromas, flavors, and a character similar to Ausone. This beauty must be tasted to be believed. It should drink well for 25+ years. Score –  (91-93). (RP)

CHEVAL BLANC

TASTING NOTES:  Only 60% of the harvest was utilized in this marvelous blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc. As always, the 2006 Cheval Blanc is made in a lighter, more elegant style based on finesse, purity, and beautiful nuances. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by scents of crushed rocks, menthol, raspberries, cherries, and assorted blue as well as black fruits. An impeccable integration of new oak, medium body, terrific palate penetration and purity, and light tannins suggest it will be drinkable in 2-3 years, but it should put on considerable weight because of its large Cabernet Franc component. While the 2006 may not eclipse the 2005, 2000, or 1998, it is not far off in terms of quality and longevity. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. Score –  (92-95). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  This property has been resurrected beautifully by perfectionist wine guru, Stephan von Neipperg, and his increasingly popular and respected winemaking consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt. A big-time sleeper of the vintage, the 2006 Clos de l’Oratoire reveals notes of smoked meats, blueberries, raspberries, cedar, and spicy oak. Opulent, fleshy, rich, and atypically fruity and forward for the vintage, this medium to full-bodied, gorgeously proportioned St.-Emilion is ideal for drinking during its first 12-15 years of life.

TASTING NOTES:  Another garage wine made under the supervision of Michel Rolland’s well-known assistant, Jean-Philippe Fort, there are 825 cases of this cuvee that is, literally, made grape by grape. Not for the shy of heart, this wine exhibits enormous extraction, tannin, and richness. Consumers will likely still be enjoying it 30-50 years from now. It is even doubtful that anyone from my generation will be alive when it hits its peak. This is a wine for those with 19th century tastes, but it is impressively endowed, and one has to admire a proprietor who is willing to go back to the future and make a Bordeaux reminiscent of some of the finest vintages of the 1800s! A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare, this inky/blue/purple-tinged effort possesses high levels of fruit and tannin, a massive structure, a foreboding, primordial character, and a backwardness matched only by that of Ausone. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2040+. Score –  (92-95). (RP)

CLOS FOURTET
1er Grand Cru Classé (B)

RP: 90-93       WS: 89-91       JR: 17-       DEC: ***       ST: 88-91       SME: 8.9

TASTING NOTES:  Clos Fourtet has produced a succession of brilliant wines since 2003. While the 2006 may not equal the prodigious 2005, it possesses a dark ruby/purple hue as well as sweet notes of creme de cassis, spring flowers, new oak, and a steely/mineral-like nuance in the background. Attractive, plump, opulent fruit on the palate is followed by a slight narrowing, but the finish is strong, with moderate tannin. Consume this beauty between 2008-2016. Score –  (90-93). (RP)

CROIX DE LABRIE

TASTING NOTES:  Along with Lusseau, Croix de Labrie is one of the most decadently hedonistic and luxuriously fruity wines of Bordeaux. It also possesses undeniable complexity, texture, and class. This estate has only been producing wine for a little over a decade, and since it is made in very limited quantities, it represents the quintessential St.-Emilion garagiste wine. A sleeper of the vintage, the opulent, full-bodied 2006 exhibits aromas of kirsch, blackberry jam, coffee, crushed rocks, and flowers. Drink it during its first 12-15 years of life. Score –  (92-94). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  Very impressive aromas of blackberry and coffee follow through to medium- to full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a long finish. This is all in finesse. A tiny bit more on the midpalate would make it 92-94. Score –  (89-91). (WS)

FLEUR CARDINALE

RP: 91-93       JR: 15       DEC: ***       ST: 89-91       SME: 8.9

TASTING NOTES:  The 2006 may not turn out to be as good as the 2005 Fleur Cardinale, but this estate deserves its promotion in the most recent classification of St.-Emilion to a grand cru classe (suspended in March because of pending litigation). Tremendous efforts in both the vineyard and the winemaking have resulted in a succession of brilliant wines. Made with the consulting assistance of Michel Rolland’s top assistant, Jean-Philippe Fort, and St.-Emilion’s “bad boy,” Jean-Luc Thunevin, the 2006 is a blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a flowery nose offering notes of black fruits, crushed rocks, and spicy oak. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, pure, and precise, this stunner falls just short of rivaling the fabulous 2005. It should drink well for 10-15 years. Drink 2007-2022. Score –  (91-93). (RP)

GRACIA

TASTING NOTES:  Perfectionist sculptor/stonemason, Michel Gracia, is the force behind this wine, which comes closest to imitating the titan of St.-Emilion - Ausone. Cropped at 16 hectoliters per hectare, the black/purple-tinged 2006 is a blend of 80% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers a gorgeous perfume of incense, blackberries, blueberries, and cassis, a full-bodied, powerful attack, wonderful purity and precision, sweet tannin, and amazing texture as well as length. Sadly, only 350 or so cases will be produced. One of the vintage’s most compelling wines, it should age effortlessly for 20-25 years. Drink 2007-2032. Score –  (93-95). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  As it has been in almost every vintage since 1998, the 2006 Grand-Corbin-Despagne is a sleeper of the vintage (it was rewarded with a promotion in the new classification of the wines of St.-Emilion - suspended in March because of litigation). The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2006 exhibits aromas of pure blue and black fruits, earth, and smoke, outstanding fruit purity, medium to full body, moderate tannin, good length, and fine overall harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020+. Score –  (90-91). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  A superb effort from young Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this inky/purple-colored wine displays moderately intense, but pure aromatics of black fruits, lead pencil shavings, smoke, and camphor. Terrific fruit on the attack, medium to full body, a layered mouthfeel, and substantial, but sweet, well-integrated tannin suggest this stunning St.-Emilion will be at its finest between 2012-2025. Score –  (91-93). LA GAFFELIÈRE

TASTING NOTES:  Following the finest example of La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted (the 2005), the 2006 is a strong effort revealing a dark ruby/purple color as well as aromas of roasted herbs, pain grille, sweet black cherries, currants, cedar, spice box, and earth. This medium-bodied, elegant, moderately tannic St.-Emilion should be drinkable between 2009-2018. Score –  (89-91). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  One of the more flamboyant examples of St.-Emilion, this tiny estate consists of six acres of 100%, 32-year old Merlot vines. The exotic, voluptuously-textured 2006 offers an exuberant bouquet of roasted coffee, kirsch liqueur, licorice, and pain grille. Opulent, fleshy, and already delicious (because of its low acidity and silky tannin), it will drink beautifully young, and last for at least 12-15 years. Sadly, fewer than 1,000 cases are produced. Drink 2007-2022. Score –  (90-93). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  Under the leadership of the extraordinarily talented team of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, this 25-acre estate on the Cote Pavie (one of St.-Emilion’s finest terroirs) has soared in quality. The monumental 2005 Larcis Ducasse has been followed by another brilliant effort in 2006. Unfortunately, production is less than 3,000 cases. The final blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc (from yields of 27-34 hectoliters per hectare) has resulted in a soft, opulent wine revealing notes of cedar, roasted herbs, smoke, black cherry liqueur, plums, and cassis. This savory, fleshy, attractive St.-Emilion possesses good power and depth, but no hardness. It should drink beautifully for 15 or more years. Score –  (91-94). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  An ethereal, finesse-styled, Cheval Blanc-like delicacy accompanied by intensity characterize the 2006 l’Arrosee, another terrific effort from new proprietor Roger Caille. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet perfume of crushed rocks, raspberries, cherries, flowers, and spice. Velvety-textured and structured, with considerable concentration yet a lightness of being, this finesse-styled beauty should be ready to drink in 3-5 years, and last for two decades. Drink 2010-2027. Score –  (92-94). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  A garagiste offering that is impeccably well-made by consultant guru Stephane Derenoncourt, there are fewer than 1,000 cases of the 2006 Lucia, a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. One-third of the vines in this tiny vineyard were planted in 1901. The deep purple-hued 2006 exhibits sweet, smoky, black currant, camphor, and graphite aromas. The explosive aromatics are matched by the dense, concentrated, opulent flavors that stain the palate. With no hardness or angularity, this beauty can be enjoyed during its first 10-15 years of life. TASTING NOTES:  Another sensational garage operation in St.-Emilion, proprietor Denis Barraud’s Lynsolence has been performing at a high level of quality for a number of years. The 2006's dense purple color and sweet bouquet of scorched earth, camphor, beef blood, lead pencil shavings, blackberries, and cassis liqueur are both outstanding. The complex aromatics are followed by an impressively constituted, full-bodied, concentrated wine with ripe tannin and a long finish. It should be drinkable in 4-5 years, and age nicely for two decades or more. Drink 2011-2027. Score –  (91-94). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  Sweet black cherry aromas interwoven with notions of crushed rocks, herbs, and spice emerge from the 2006 Magdelaine. The moderately intense aromatics are followed by a dark ruby/plum-tinged wine with more structure than usual, as well as sweet fruit and impressive elegance and purity. This is never a big St.-Emilion, but the 2006 is handsomely rendered. It will be at its peak between 2009-2018. Score –  (89-91). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  This once unheralded terroir continues to go from strength to strength under the guidance of proprietors Chantal and Gerard Perse. A new drainage system throughout the vineyard has been installed, and no doubt has increased the quality of this cuvee. Monbousquet’s upbringing includes such Burgundy practices as malolactic in barrel, aging on its lees, and little or no manipulation. A blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2006 is an elegant, pure, precise effort displaying hints of blueberries, raspberries, cherries, pain grille, espresso, and smoke. Sweet tannin, deep, medium to full-bodied flavors, and superb purity are found in this over-achieving St.-Emilion. It should drink well for 15 or more years. Drink 2007-2022. Score –  (91-93). TASTING NOTES:  A tiny production of 1,200 cases ensures that not much of this wine is available, but it is one of the top dozen or so St.-Emilions produced since proprietors Chantal and Gerard Perse took over the estate. Cropped at 30 hectoliters per hectare, the wine enjoyed a 32-day maceration, malolactic in barrel, and aging on its lees. The result is an impressive inky/purple-hued 2006 offering up notes of crushed rocks, black raspberry jam, cold steel, flowers, and spice, and a terrific, full-bodied mouthfeel with no heaviness. Having already absorbed much of its new oak, it is rich and pure with excellent precision, length, and aging potential. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030. Score –  (94-96). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  As of this vintage, Pavie Macquin is entitled to a premier grand cru classe designation in the revised classification of the wines of St.-Emilion (suspended in March because of pending litigation). Overseen by the dynamic duo of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, the 2006, a blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, should turn out to be one of the top wines of the vintage. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, blackberries, blueberries, licorice, and smoke. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich, it is nearly as prodigious as the virtually perfect 2005. An amazing wine for the vintage, it clearly emerges from a magnificent terroir. TASTING NOTES:  Since purchasing this property, Dominique Mestrequilhem has been attempting to produce a wine in the image of his other estate, the wonderfully exuberant, fruity Pipeau. As this 2006 attests, he is close to succeeding. The lush, richly fruity 2006 Pindefleur is filled with notes of cherries, black currants, spice box, and oak. Well-made, impressively pure, and silky-textured, it is ideal for drinking during its first decade of life. It is a sleeper of the vintage. Drink 2007-2017. Score –  (88-90). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  An extraordinarily elegant Quinault with remarkable purity and texture has been produced in 2006. This blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, and enjoys every state-of-the-art winemaking technique, most of them Burgundy-inspired (especially the cold pre-fermentation maceration, malolactic in barrel, and aging on its lees with plenty of batonnage). A top-notch success for proprietor Alain Raynaud and his wife, Francoise, this deep ruby/purple-colored effort exhibits sweet aromas of spring flowers, blueberries, and raspberries. Medium-bodied and layered, with attractive sweetness, ripe tannin, a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol, and a long finish, it will drink beautifully in 3-4 years, and should last for 15 or more thereafter. Drink 2010-2025.

TASTING NOTES:  Good healthy ruby-red. Sappy aromas of black raspberry, smoked meat, spices, minerals and licorice. Superripe, lush and deep, with a creamy sweetness and uncanny density for the vintage. A wonderfully broad, fine-grained wine with excellent life in the mouth. Finishes quite long, with subtle oakiness. Score –  (90-93). (ST)

TASTING NOTES:  The 2006 is a marvelous effort from proprietress Christine Valette. Displaying a saturated blue/purple hue, a beautiful perfume of blackberries, violets, charcoal, and subtle pain grille, upfront fruit, a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol, and a multilayered palate, it is not quite as good as the virtually perfect 2005, but it is an outstanding claret to drink between 2012-2030. This is the first vintage where Madame Valette could label her wine as a St.-Emilion premier grand cru classe ... well, we all thought so until the new classification was challenged in court by several mediocre St.-Emilion estates that were justifiably demoted. Thus, for now, a Bordeaux judge has “suspended” the new hierarchy. Score –  (91-94). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  This is a strong vintage for Bordeaux’s dry white wines, probably as good or better than 2005. Crisp acidity combined with outstanding concentration and the fact that most of the white grapes were harvested before the rains began in mid-September resulted in an impressive group of wines. Score –  (90-92). TASTING NOTES:  One of the superstars of this appellation, the 2006 Fontenil (the home estate of Dany and Michel Rolland) exhibits a dense ruby/purple color followed by noteworthy aromas of crushed rocks, flowers, black raspberries, and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and nicely textured with sweet tannin in the finish, it should drink handsomely for 12-15 years. Drink 2007-2022.Score –  (90-92). (RP)

TASTING NOTES:  Very dark brownish crimson. Extraordinarily rich and ripe and spicily exotic. Sweet and almost brûlée – quite extraordinary! Could probably drink quite young - so eager is this wine to be liked - but much further along the ripeness spectrum than most 2006s. Drink 2012-18. Score –  (17). (JR)

TASTING NOTES:  (75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc; including a five-day cold soak, the total cuvaison here was 41 days, according to Juliette Becot) Medium ruby-red. Primary aromas of blackberry liqueur and licorice. Supple, bright and juicy, with youthfully medicinal but pliant flavors of dark berries, dark chocolate, violet, licorice and minerals. Offers a restrained sweetness and finishes with firm tannins. Following a green harvest and the use of three different sorting tables, the equivalent of just 25 hectoliters per hectare was made. Score –  (87-89). (ST)

TASTING NOTES:  (a blend of 70% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 5% malbec) Good deep red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry and chocolate. Suave, juicy and sweet, with lovely palate presence and inner-mouth aromatic character. Tannins are ripe and sweet. This Cotes de Francs outperformer would do well in a flight of Saint-Emilions. Score –  (87-89). (ST)
