TASTING NOTE: By far the finest Clinet since the late Jean-Michel Arcaute made the spectacular duo of 1989 and 1990, the 2005 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as scents of raspberry ice cream intermixed with plums, figs, black currants, coffee, and chocolate. It is a ripe, full-bodied, super-rich, intense Pomerol with loads of tannin and an exotic fruit character. Drink this. Score - (93-95). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE:The most profound Clinet since the prodigies produced by the late Jean-Michel Arcaute in 1989 and 1990, the 2005 boasts a fabulous nose of blueberries, violets, truffles, subtle wood, and cold steel. Inky/purple-hued, full-bodied, and multilayered with adequate acidity, this exceptionally well-endowed, pure effort is a tour de force in winemaking. Although it is high in tannin, there is so much fruit and glycerin (the alcohol must be 14+%) that it should be drinkable in 4-6 years, and keep for three decades. Score - (94-96). (RP)

TASTING NOTE: A spectacular Pomerol from Helene Garcin, this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc emerges from a 15-acre vineyard planted on the plateau of Pomerol. The 2005 ranks alongside the estate’s greatest efforts to date, the 2001, 2000, and 1998. An extraordinary perfume of creme brulee interwoven with chocolate, mocha, blackberries, and sweet kirsch soars from the glass. With superb intensity, sweet tannin, stunning opulence, and fabulous texture and purity, this is a compelling example of the appellation as well as the vintage. It should be approachable in 3-4 years, and last for two decades or more. If you can find it, buy it by the caseload. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030. Score - (95-97). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE:  A top-notch effort from this Pomerol estate, the 2005 Domaine de l’Eglise displays a dark ruby/purple color along with big, sweet aromas of melted licorice, chocolate, mocha, cherries, and plums. Deep, plush, and heady with attractive opulence, purity, and ripe tannin buttressed by decent acidity, it should hit its peak in 3-4 years, and keep for 15 or more. Kudos to proprietor Philippe Casteja for increasing the quality at this property. Score - (90-92). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE : Another property owned by Philippe Casteja, this dense purple-colored 2005 offers gorgeous scents of sweet black cherries intermixed with hints of smoke, pain grille, and damp forest floor. Opulent, rich, and well-balanced with enough glycerin to conceal its serious tannin and structure, this wine should close down after bottling, and drink well between 2011-2020+. Score - (90-92). TASTING NOTE: Gazin is typically oaky, tannic, and backward in its youth, but the 2005 is more open-knit and not as aggressively woody. It possesses an impressive color as well as a moderately intense nose of black cherries, berries, caramel, subtle pain grille, roasted herbs, and black and red fruits. Medium-bodied, elegant, and pure, it should be at its finest between 2013-2025. P.S. I should note that three separate samples were slightly different in quality, two of which were better than this numerical score suggests. The ultimate truth won’t be known until the wine comes out in bottle, but I believe it will correspond to this review. Score - (90-93). (Robert Parker, April 2007 )

TASTING NOTE: As I have written so many times before, this is a wine of extraordinary nobility and complexity whose aromatics frequently resemble those of its near-by neighbor, the famed St.-Emilion, Cheval Blanc. A 1,200-case blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, its fruit comes from the finest parcels of what used to be known as the Certan Giraud vineyard (the remaining parcels go into Certan Marzelle). The dense plum/purple-tinged 2005 Hosanna offers up sweet aromas of mocha, black raspberries, cherries, cassis, smoke, and flowers. Produced from a 12+ acre vineyard near Vieux Chateau Certan, Le Pin, and Petit Village, the dense purple-hued 2005 exhibits wonderfully sweet, full-bodied aromas and flavors of plums and blackberries, a fabulous texture, a big, chewy richness, and high tannin that is largely obscured by the wine’s extravagant richness and intensity. As I wrote last year, this is unquestionably the finest La Fleur de Gay produced since the back-to-back vintages of 1989 and 1990. A 100% Merlot cuvee cropped at a low 28 hectoliters per hectare, it has put on even more weight and richness since 2006. There are approximately 1,000 cases of this brilliant Pomerol that exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of black raspberries, blueberries, charcoal, truffles, and subtle espresso and toasty oak notes. Full-bodied, beautifully textured, opulent, and fleshy with exceptional precision as well as clarity, this fabulous effort will need 5-7 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 25 or more years.Score - (94-96). TASTING NOTE:The first top-notch effort under new owner, Catherine Pere-Verge, and winemaking guru, Michel Rolland, Le Gay’s 2005 is reminiscent of some of the estate’s monumental wines made in the post-World War II era (1947 and 1950). TESTING NOTE: The uncontested star of Pomerol, there are 2,400 cases of the 2005 Petrus, which appears to be the finest wine made at this estate since the 1998 ... and that's saying something. It boasts an inky/blue/ruby/purple color along with an extraordinary bouquet of sweet mulberries, black cherries, cassis, vanillin, and spice box. While powerful and full-bodied with high tannin, it displays no aggressiveness or austerity. This massive, rich, super-intense Pomerol will be at its finest between 2018-2050+. It is another brilliant achievement for Christian and Jean-Francois Moueix. Score - (98-100). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: Proprietor Jean-Francois Moueix told me this wine reminds him of the 1947 Petrus. Production in 2005 (2,300 cases) was about half of what could be produced, and the resulting wine should last for a half century or more. A dense purple color is followed by a promising nose of sweet black and red fruits interwoven with pain grille, mineral, licorice, and mocha-like characteristics. This full-bodied, powerful, exceptionally pure, multilayered effort is a bigger, fuller Petrus than the 2003, and easily as structured as the 2000. Only time will tell whether it will turn out to be as complex and noble as the 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+. Score - (96-100). (RP)

TASTING NOTE: It seems like proprietor Hubert de Bouard has the Midas touch no matter what he does. The profound 2005 Angelus (a 7,000-case blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc that achieved 14.5% natural alcohol) may be the finest wine produced at this estate since 1990 and 1989. An amazingly rich bouquet of espresso roast interwoven with blueberry liqueur, violets, and graphite is followed by a wine of enormous richness, full body, superb acidity, huge tannin, and nearly perfect symmetry. This staggering effort is more backward than such recent vintages as 2003 and 2000, but after 5-10 years of cellaring, it will provide immense pleasure for three decades or more. It is a titan in the making!

TASTING NOTE: La Chapelle d'Ausone only hints at what purchasers will find in the 2005 Ausone, a 50- to 100-year wine whose production consists of a mere 15,000 bottles. Black as a moonless night with a soaring nose of spring flowers, creme de cassis, melted licorice, truffles, and blueberries, it is incredibly intense with extremely high extract, tannin, and alcohol, yet is unbelievably delicate and light on its feet for such a massive wine. This is a brilliant winemaking achievement from an extraordinarily hallowed terroir on the southern hillside slopes of St.-Emilion. The 2005 will not be ready to drink for 15-20 years, but in a hundred years, wine lovers will still be singing its praises. An amazing accomplishment! Alain Vauthier has accomplished such extraordinary things at Ausone over the last few vintages, it is difficult to imagine the 2005s might be the pinnacle of his achievement. Amazingly deep and multilayered, but so ethereal it must be tasted to be believed, it is a rich, full-throttle offering that should outlive us all. This is one of the few grand cru St.-Emilions that is available in reasonable quantities (6,000+ cases). TASTING NOTE: While there was some variation with this wine on the three separate occasions I tasted it, it is unquestionably a spectacular effort as well as one of the finest Beau Sejour-Becots made by proprietor Gerard Becot. The natural alcohol came in just under 15%, and the blend of 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon was cropped at 35 hectoliters per hectare. Despite the wine's massiveness, intensity, and powerful, full-bodied flavors that coat the palate, there is remarkable freshness, definition, and lightness because of the vintage's unusual combination of huge richness, incredible tannin levels, record breaking alcohol levels, and very good acids. This should turn out to be a profound St.-Emilion and may merit a score in the mid-nineties if everything goes as well as I suspect it should. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. Score - (92-95). TASTING NOTE: The spectacular 2005 Bellevue should rival, possibly eclipse their 2000. This 15.5-acre, south/southwest facing vineyard, near both Beau Sejour Becot and Beausejour-Duffau as well as Angelus, has been on a qualitative roll since Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt began to manage the estate in 2000. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, it possesses an extraordinary mineral component along with huge, sweet blackberry and cassis notes with hints of raspberries and crushed rocks. A super black/purple color only hints at the wine's richness, massive concentration, and monster tannins. It represents the essence of terroir. Some people were surprised that Bellevue was not promoted in the new St.-Emilion classification, but they have only been making high quality wines since 2000. Prior to that, there was a succession of mediocrities. The 2,000-case 2005 came in at a whopping 14.5% natural alcohol, but the alcohol is barely noticeable due to the wine's richness. TASTING NOTE: The ultimate garage estate (5 acres planted with 45-year-old Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon), the 2005 Bellevue Mondotte was cropped at 15 hectoliters per hectare, which is amazing given the fact that there are 5,500 vines per hectare. TASTING NOTE: Cropped at 25 hectoliters per hectare, this 1,000-case blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc is fashioned from 65-year-old vines, and is among the most concentrated wines of Bordeaux. Akin to wines produced in the late 19th century, the black/purple-hued 2005 boasts remarkable intensity, power, concentration, and tannin. The 55-day maceration, 14% alcohol, and layers of fruit and glycerin result in a formidable claret that should not be approached before 2015. TASTING NOTE:This is a wine for readers with incredibly long life-expectancies as it possesses the power and longevity associated with many pre-phylloxera, 19th century wines of Bordeaux. Like so many of the small St.-Emilion estates, there are no compromises at Clos de Sarpe. The 2005 was hand-harvested from yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare, given a 55-day maceration, and aged in a combination of new wood. It will be bottled unfiltered. The wine achieved 14+% alcohol naturally. This opaque purple-colored, massive, ferociously tannic offering reveals scary concentration levels, huge dry extract, and technical numbers that are off the charts. Despite its impressive credentials, size, richness, and overall balance, it will close down after bottling, and re-emerge 10-15 years later. TASTING NOTE: Based on older vintages, this garagiste wine is best consumed during its first 10-15 years of life. A hedonistic 100% Merlot cuvee, the 2005 (300 cases produced) possesses a dense ruby/purple hue as well as a beautiful bouquet of espresso roast, blackberry jam, sweet cherries, caramel, and spicy oak. Exotic, lush, super-intense, and impossible to resist, it is the vinous equivalent of liquid Viagra. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020. Score - (94-96). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: Alain Vauthier, who owns this small estate, has been ratcheting up the level of quality at Fonbel just as he has at his more well-known properties, Ausone and Moulin St.-Georges. The 2005 Fonbel offers an inky/purple color, sweet aromas of flowers, crushed rocks, blueberries, and cassis, a full-bodied palate, and loads of extract, glycerin, and sweet tannin. Approachable by the standards of this vintage, it should drink well upon release, and last for 12-15 years. A sleeper! Score - (90-92). (RP)

TASTING NOTE: Kudos to proprietor Christian Dauriac (and consultant Michel Rolland) for this outstanding effort as well as for Destieux's recent upgrade to a Grand Cru Classe in the most recent classification of St.-Emilions (suspended in March, 2007 because of litigation). From a 45-year-old vineyard in St.-Hippolyte planted with 66% Merlot and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (an atypically high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon), the 2005 achieved 14.5% natural alcohol. The rusticity of older vintages has been tamed, and the result is a full-bodied, powerful, muscular, concentrated, intense St.-Emilion offering a dense ruby/purple color as well as loads of espresso roast, roasted meat, sweet cassis, and subtle herbal characteristics. This full-throttle blockbuster possesses impressive purity and density. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. Score - (92-94). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: After Destieux's brilliant 2003, I thought proprietor Christian Dauriac may have hit the highest peak possible at this old vineyard (average age 45 years). However, the blockbuster 2005 may well eclipse the 2003. Consultant Michel Rolland's final blend consists of 66% Merlot, and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. A flamboyant, muscular, seriously concentrated wine of great intensity, it possesses a dense black/purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of smoke, truffles, blackberries, earth, new saddle leather, and grilled meat juices. The wine is amazingly dense, rich, and powerful yet also elegant and fresh. The 14.5% alcohol is the highest this estate has achieved. Blame the 2005 drought for that characteristic. TASTING NOTE: The over-achieving 2005 Faugeres (85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon) was made from low yields of 27 hectoliters per hectare. Rich and full-bodied, it boasts a deep ruby/purple hue along with notes of blueberries, black raspberries, cassis, minerals, flowers, and spice. This impressive effort tips the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol. New proprietor Silvio Denz has renamed his luxury cuvee, but the quality is as high as it was under Faugeres' former owner. The good news is that both Stephan von Neipperg (proprietor of Canon-La-Gaffeliere and a few other estates) and Michel Rolland have been hired as consultants. Score - (91-93). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: The Cuvee Speciale Peby has been a blockbuster since its inception in 1998 (it is meant to honor the former proprietress's deceased husband). Fashioned from yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare, the 2005 is 100% Merlot from 45-year-old vines planted on a southeast facing slope in brown limestone soils. This sensational effort is as concentrated as a Bordeaux can be. Hugely extracted, but without any bitterness, it possesses abundant power, a black/purple color, and a beautiful perfume of creme de cassis, graphite, pain grille, and chocolate. In the mouth, it is formidably endowed and powerful with high tannin, glycerin, and richness. Like its sibling, it achieved 14.5% natural alcohol. Give it 7-10 years of cellaring and enjoy it over the following three decades. New proprietor Silvio Denz has renamed his luxury cuvee, but the quality is as high as it was under Faugeres' former owner. TASTING NOTE: The new owners decided to change the name of the luxury cuvee from Peby-Faugères to Cuvee Speciale Peby. The stunning 2005 is the finest example of this wine since its debut vintage, 1998. Yields for this 100% Merlot (from southeast-facing, limestone-based slopes) were a tiny 25 hectoliters per hectare. This cuvee receives a Burgundy-like upbringing of malolactic in barrel and aging on its lees. A flamboyant, fragrant perfume of blueberries, blackberries, plums, anise seed, and camphor soars from the glass of this extraordinarily concentrated wine. In the mouth, it is stratospheric in texture with abundant amounts of sweet, silky tannin, high glycerin, and a 60-second finish. This is a prodigious effort from 2005. TASTING NOTE: Wine guru Stephane Derenoncourt appears to have tamed some of the blatant oakiness often found in young vintages of Ferrand-Lartigue. TASTING NOTE: From a tiny (under 7 acres) vineyard planted with 32-year-old, 100% Merlot vines, La Gomerie is one of the more hedonistic, opulent/flamboyant wines of Bordeaux. Yet it is capable of lasting for 10-15 or more years. The well-known Michel Rolland has been the longtime consultant, and the 2005 ranks alongside the brilliant 2000. It boasts an intense perfume of black cherries, blackberries, roasted coffee, melted licorice, chocolate, and espresso. Full-bodied, dense, and huge, it is clearly a modern-styled St.-Emilion, but because of the vintage's high acidity and firm tannins, it is more classic than such hedonistic years as 2000 or 1998. This stunner should drink nicely young, yet age for 15 or more years. Score - (93-96). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: One of the All-Star garage operations, this 100% Merlot cuvee from a 6-acre, 32-year old vineyard is a consistently exotic/flamboyant St.-Emilion that some of the wine world's reactionaries presumably find too tasty and over-the-top. The deep purple-hued 2005 (1,000 cases produced; 14.5% natural alcohol) may turn out to be La Gomerie's finest effort to date, and certainly rivals the 2000. It offers an exotic perfume of jammy blackberries, kirsch liqueur, melted licorice, and roasted coffee. Fruit, glycerin, and massive extract conceal a touch of sweet oak, and the wine cascades over the palate with magnificent layers of glycerin and richness. This huge, rich, impeccably well-balanced St.-Emilion possesses remarkable freshness and delineation. It will be irresistible young as it should not close down after bottling. NEW
TASTING NOTE: Made by the brilliant Stephan von Neipperg, the 2005 La Mondotte has soared in quality during its year in barrel, which is not surprising for wines that are treated so minimally and often take a year or more to form their personalities. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc from a 13-acre vineyard planted in clay and limestone soils, above Gerard Perse's Chateau Pavie-Decesse, this 50-year-old vineyard was cropped at 20 hectoliters per hectare. A cold maceration, Burgundy-styled pigeages, and aging on its lees have resulted in a monumental effort of great intensity that rivals both the 2000 and 1998 La Mondottes. A dense purple color is followed by a sumptuously sweet bouquet of graphite, espresso roast, black cherries, blackberries, and a hint of wet rocks. Powerful tannin supported by an amazing, multi-layered, full-bodied wine with enormous richness suggest this will be another modern day legend from La Mondotte. TASTING NOTE: The 2005 is the finest La Tour Figeac I have ever tasted, primarily because of the consulting winemaker, Stephane Derenoncourt, whose wife, Christine, is director of this estate. Produced from yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare and a final blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, this cuvee achieved a natural alcohol of 14.4%. The purity, richness, extraordinary texture, and notes of blueberries, blackberries, cassis, licorice, pain grille, and white chocolate are as seductive as one could want. In the mouth, there is uncommon texture, opulence, and length. This is a beautifully pure, full-throttle offering from a bio-dynamically farmed vineyard. Don't miss it as the price is relatively low for the quality level. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024.  Score - (91-94). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: This offering has been controversial as its price increase ranged between 300-400%, but this is a great terroir, and since the remarkable winemaking team of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt took over in 2002, Larcis Ducasse is finally showing its true colors. Located near Pavie, it possesses undeniable potential as demonstrated by the profound 2005. A 3,000-case blend of 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon fashioned from yields of 27 hectoliters per hectare, it underwent all of the standard garagiste winemaking techniques. It is not surprising that just about all the famous estates in this neighborhood on the Cote Pavie, including Pavie and Troplong-Mondot, did unbelievably well in 2005. A dark, dense purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of roasted herbs, espresso, tapenade, creme de cassis, and sweet kirsch. It is a wine of sheer opulence, extravagant richness, sweet tannin, and an amazingly layered texture as well as length. A blockbuster with superb elegance, finesse, and precision, it represents an exceptional achievement. Kudos to everyone involved for turning out this modern day legend. TASTING NOTE:  The most profound wine made at this great terroir since the 1945, 2005 is the wine fans of this estate have been waiting for for decades. The brilliant partnership of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, which began managing Larcis Ducasse in 2002, has hit a home run, producing a prodigious St.-Emilion of legendary proportions. This blend of 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon receives malolactic in barrel and aging on its lees for 7-10 months. Displaying the type of complexity that can only come from the finest vineyards, it boasts a big, spicy, cedar, grilled herb, pot roast, sweet currant, kirsch liqueur, plum, and blackberry-scented bouquet. TASTING NOTE: Thanks to this estate's new proprietor, 2005 is the finest vintage for l'Arrosee since 1982. A mineral-dominated effort, it reveals a Burgundian-like nose of black raspberries, forest floor, flowers, and even blacker fruits. As the wine sits in the glass, a notion of spring lilacs also emerges. This full-bodied, dense, rich St.-Emilion possesses an ethereal lightness/elegance that can not be dismissed. The tannins are substantial, but sweet and soft, suggesting this wine will be approachable in its youth yet age easily for 25 or more years. It is worth noting that the inestimable Michel Bettane, France's most competent wine writer/critic, named the 2005 l'Arrosee the “wine of the year” on his website ... no small distinction.  Score - (92-94). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: A consistently top-notch garagiste effort, l'Hermitage is fashioned from relatively old vines (about 40 years of age) planted near two premier grand cru classe vineyards, Angelus and Beausejour-Duffau. This small 9-acre site includes an unusually high percentage of Cabernet Franc, and the final blend in 2005 was 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc. An elegantly styled claret with sweet black cherry fruit intermixed with notions of forest floor, roasted herbs, menthol, and blueberries, its superb fragrance is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine with high but ripe tannin and good acidity, which provides tremendous definition. Having put on more weight and structure since I tasted it last year, it will be drinkable in 2-3 years, and should keep for 15-20.  Score - (90-93). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: Another 100% Merlot tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol, the 2005 Lynsolence was fashioned from tiny yields of 23 hectoliters per hectare, received a nine day cold soak, a month-long macertaion, and the rotation of barrels on the relatively new Oxoline system (a system of barrel racks on wheels that allow the barrels to be easily turned, which enhances the upbringing of a wine on its lees by doing an automatic batonnage without opening the bung). This deep ruby/purple-tinged St.-Emilion offers a stunning nose of coffee, blueberries, black cherry jam, smoke, and lead pencil shavings. TASTING NOTE: This is unquestionably the finest wine Gerard Perse has yet produced from this less than ideal terroir in Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens. Perse put in a complete drainage system, which is essential in these flat, sandy, clay, and gravelly soils. The 2005 Monbousquet, a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, reveals terrific intensity and purity as well as a gorgeous perfume of sweet black cherries, roasted herbs, meat juices, kirsch, blackberries, and spice. Full-bodied and opulent, with more structure, tannin, and delineation than such top vintages as 2000, 1999, and 1998, the 2005 represents an amazing over-achievement for its modest terroir, and is a tribute to the extraordinary abilities and commitment to excellence of proprietor Perse. TASTING NOTE: There are 7,000 cases of this 60% Merlot/30% Cabernet Franc/10% Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the home estate of Chantal and Gerard Perse. Although this is not considered to be one of St.-Emilion's finest terroirs, everything is done in an artisinal manner - including hand harvesting, hand sorting, a draconian selection in both the vineyard and the cellars, and Burgundy-like treatments of malolactic in barrel and aging sur-lie. Monbousquet has been a stunning success ever since Perse took over the property. Earlier vintages continue to suggest that this cuvee has far greater longevity than expected given the opulence and enormous fruit. For example, the 1998 and 1999 remain infants in terms of development, and the 1995 is just coming into a pre-adolescent stage. The 2005 (13.5% alcohol) possesses a saturated blue/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of pain grille, roasted herbs, grilled meats, black cherry jam, blackberries, and spice. TASTING NOTE: Last year I was not sure whether the 2005 would turn out to be better than the 2003 or 2000, two wines that can taste perfect on any given day, especially the 2000. However, this fabulous vineyard has once again produced 7,000 cases of true elixir in 2005, and it looks like this vintage will take its place in the pantheon of monumental Pavies that have been produced since Gerard Perse gained control of this great terroir on the famed Cote Pavie, just outside the medieval village of St.-Emilion. The 2005, a final blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, enjoyed a Burgundian-like, eight day cold maceration, a six week cuvaison, and malolactic in oak. It will spend 26 months aging before being bottled. Its liquid mineral, scorched earth, blackberry, cassis liqueur, and roasted coffee characteristics are accompanied by phenomenal acidity, high tannin, and unbelievable levels of fruit and texture. One would have to go back to some of the last century's greatest vintages to find the equal of this stunning St.-Emilion. Although not the most concentrated Bordeaux, it is unquestionably one of the most noble and potentially long-lived. Is it possible that Perse's wines represent cleaner, more modern day versions of the 1921s, 1929s, and right bank 1947s? They are meant to be cellared for 10-15 years, and kept over the following 50 or more. The 2005 Pavie is one of his greatest achievements in terms of richness allied to phenomenal elegance and finesse. The natural alcohol came in around 14%, about the same as in 2003 and 2000. TASTING NOTE: As of 2006, Pavie Macquin is one of St.-Emilion's new Premier Grand Cru Classes, although the 2006 reclassification of St.-Emilion has been suspended by a Bordeaux judge because of a pending lawsuit from three estates that were demoted (justifiably in my opinion.) Their 2005 may be the finest wine they have yet produced – even better than their brilliant 2000 and 1998. From a 37-acre vineyard, this blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon is fermented in open top tanks with pigeage, malolactic in barrel, aging on its lees, and batonnage, all a la Burgundy. It achieved 14.5% natural alcohol, which must be an all-time record at this estate. Over 4,000 cases will be produced. A fascinating wine that reminded me of a top vintage of Ausone, it represents the essence of its terroir as well as richness. Black/purple to the rim with an extraordinary, intense nose of crushed rocks, spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and camphor, it possesses superb depth, huge tannin, and massive concentration as well as freshness (from acidity and definition). This legendary effort should be drinkable in a decade, and last for 35+ years. Out of this world!  Score - (96-100). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: Readers looking for a tasty, delicious St.-Emilion that can be enjoyed at a young age should check out this value pick. TASTING NOTE: One of St.-Emilion's true exuberant fruit bombs, the explosively rich, intense 2005 is the finest Pipeau I have ever tasted. It even eclipses the 2000. A dense purple color is accompanied by glorious aromas of black raspberries, cherries, licorice, and smoke. It is an in-your-face, exotic, full-bodied effort that begs for attention. While not a classic claret, in terms of pleasure, few wines deliver as much exuberance and fruit. Enjoy it over the next 12-15 years. Score - (91-93). (RP)

TASTING NOTE: A final blend of 70% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a rare 6% Malbec has resulted in a 2005 Quinault l'Enclos that rivals what this estate achieved in 2001, 2000, and 1998. This St.-Emilion's upbringing is similar to that of a top red Burgundy, including a 7-day cold soak, fermentation in small tanks, malolactic in barrel, and aging sur-lie with the well-known oxoline system of rotating barrels on wheeled racks, which allows for a type of batonnage without having to open the bung and expose the wine to oxygen. Cropped at 30 hectoliters per hectare, it exhibits a dark ruby/purple hue along with beautiful aromas of charcoal, spring flowers, blueberries, raspberries, cassis, and a subtle note of wood. The overall style is one of finesse, elegance, and minerality. Medium to full-bodied and impeccably pure with a beautiful texture as well as 14% natural alcohol, this 2005 will be at its apogee between 2012-2025.  Score - (92-94). (Robert Parker, April 2007)

TASTING NOTE: Proprietor Alain Raynaud has produced a beautifully elegant, noble, racy 2005 Quinault l'Enclos that ranks alongside his 1998, 2000, and 2001. A blend of 77% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon (the average age of the vines is 50 years), it was cropped at 32 hectoliters per hectare, and receives the Burgundian treatment of malolactic in barrel, aging on its lees for 6-10 months, and no filtering at bottling. The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005 reveals a pure nose of charcoal, spring flowers, sweet raspberries, black cherries, and cassis. The wine is gorgeously textured, medium-bodied, and elegant yet intensely flavored with a power and texture that build on the palate. The tannin is sweet, but noticeable, and the finish is long. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030.

TASTING NOTE: A garagiste selection from a 7.5-acre parcel culled from Chateau La Bienfaisance's vineyard, Sanctus is a 1,000-case cuvee made from a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Perfectionist winemaking techniques, including small yields of 30-38 hectoliters per hectare, long macerations, malolactic in barrel, and aging sur-lie, have resulted in a stunningly rich, profound St.-Emilion.
