A FUTURES PRIMER
Never bought Futures before? Or maybe not even sure what they are? Each year, Bordeaux wines—from up-and-coming producers and renowned châteaux alike—are tasted while they’re still in the barrel by VINTAGES buyers and international wine critics. Once the reviews are in (and in 2009 they’re stellar!), a large portion of the wine is sold in advance to consumers, then shipped after two years of ageing. There’s lots of choice now, but when this historic vintage hits store shelves in 2012, the selection will be limited and prices will likely be higher. In fact, some of these wines are produced in very small quantities and often sell out as Futures, never seeing the inside of a retail store.
The 2009 Bordeaux vintage is being hailed as possibly the best ever. Acclaimed wine critic Robert Parker Jr. had this to say: “2009 may turn out to be the finest vintage I have tasted in 32 years of covering Bordeaux.” It’s no wonder global demand for Bordeaux Futures is at an all-time high. DOLLARS & SENSE
There’s no question Bordeaux Futures are a good investment—at the very least, you’re getting wonderful wines that you can cellar or enjoy now.
