Saint-Estèphe - Red Wine

CALON-SÉGUR
3e Cru

199380    (XD)  750 mL

$125  per btl    $375  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 92-94+       DEC: *****       WS: 93-96       JR: 18       GD: 16       TJW: 9.5

TASTING NOTE:  Delivers gorgeous aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice, with hints of tobacco and spice. Full-bodied, offering a lovely texture and refinement. Very long and beautiful, with tangy acidity and lively fruit. A rich, yet very balanced, Calon. This is almost all Cabernet Sauvignon instead of the normal blend with 40 percent Merlot. The château is now using 100 percent new wood. Like the changes. Score: 93-96 (WS)

CAPBERN GASQUETON

192906    (XD)  750 mL

$32  per btl    $96  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 85-87       DEC: ****       JR: 17.5

TASTING NOTE:  From the Calon-Ségur stable and very impressive! Blueish purple crimson. Very juicy and meaty. Lively fruit. Polished. Great vitality. Very much St-Estèphe on the finish. Minerals. But a quite amazing amount of sweetness on the front palate. Really wonderful expression of St-Estèphe 2009 – though not of St-Estèphe in most vintages. VGV [Very Good Value]. Drink 2016-2026. Score: 17.5 (JR)

CLAUZET

192047    (XD)  750 mL

DEC: ***       WS: 87-90       JR: 16       WE: 91-93       TJW: 9.2+

TASTING NOTE:  Medium-bodied, with plenty of good berry, spice and cedar character. Medium tannins. Score: 87-90 (WS)

COS D'ESTOURNEL
2e Cru

202929    (XD)  750 mL

$495  per btl    $1,485  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 98-100*       DEC: *****       WS: 97-100       JR: 16.5+       WE: 94-96       GD: 18.5       TJW: 9.7

TASTING NOTE:  The 2009 Cos d’Estournel is one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted ... in the world! An extraordinary effort I tasted on two separate occasions, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot with a dollop of Cabernet Franc has a whopping 14.5% alcohol, but a remarkably normal pH of 3.69. Kudos to Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier for this amazing wine made from yields of 33 hectoliters per hectare. It will be a legendary claret that should last for 50-60 years. A black/purple color is accompanied by aromas of graphite, ink, creme de cassis, blackberries, cedar, and incense. Full-bodied and unctuously textured, with an ethereal personality, tons of nuances, and a burgeoning complexity, it is an enormously well-endowed, fresh, perfectly balanced tour de force in winemaking. As mentioned above, it should drink well for 50-60 years. This wine possesses this vintage’s classic characteristics of enormous power, massive fruit, and extraordinary freshness and precision - largely unprecedented, particularly for Cabernet-based wines in the Medoc. (Tasted two times.) Score: 98-100* (RP)

COS LABORY
5e Cru

197525    (XD)  750 mL

$56  per btl    $168  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 87-88+       DEC: ****       WS: 88-91       JR: 17       WE: 90-92       GD: 16       TJW: 9.3

TASTING NOTE:  Tough tannins over juicy fruit. The wine has great ripeness as well as freshness. The intensity of the blackcurrant is considerable. Score: 90-92 (Roger Voss, WE)

DE PEZ

202697    (XD)  750 mL

$54  per btl    $162  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 90-92*       DEC: ****       WS: 86-89       JR: 16       WE: 91-93       GD: 16.5

TASTING NOTE:  The finest De Pez I have ever tasted, the 2009, from a great St.-Estephe terroir that has long been under-exploited, is a 25-30-year wine. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as aromas of crushed rocks, sweet black currants, and earth, and a layered, rich, firmly structured yet impressively deep, fleshy mouthfeel. Cellar it for 5-6 years and enjoy it over the following two decades. Drink: 2015-2035. (Tasted once.) Score: 90-92* (RP)

HAUT-MARBUZET

189456    (XD)  750 mL

$64  per btl    $192  per 3-btl. lot

DEC: ***       JR: 16       WE: 93-95       GD: 15.5       TJW: 9.2+

TASTING NOTE:  Good extraction of quite ripe, earthy Merlot fruit, fleshy spice and length, good oak, well-polished wine. Drink: 2013-20. Score: 3 Stars (out of 5) (Steven Spurrier, DEC)

LA DAME DE MONTROSE
2nd Wine of Ch. Montrose

200964    (XD)  750 mL

$75  per btl    $225  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 91-93*       WS: 88-91       JR: 16       WE: 92-94       GD: 15       TJW: 9.2

TASTING NOTE:  The second wine, the 2009 La Dame de Montrose, is an amazing blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. Voluptuously textured, super juicy, and sexy with intense blue and black fruits, decent acids, and silky tannin, this 2009 is already irresistible, and should keep for 10-15+ years. Drink 2010-2025. (Tasted once.) Score: 91-93* (RP)

LAFON-ROCHET
4e Cru

197228    (XD)  750 mL

$77  per btl    $231  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 91-93       DEC: ****       WS: 89-92       JR: 16.5       WE: 88-90       GD: 16       TJW: 9.3+

TASTING NOTE:  Perhaps the finest Lafon Rochet ever made, the purity, freshness, and sweet, rich, blueberry and boysenberry fruit and hint of pen ink that are found in this opaque purple-colored wine are impressive. Massive in the mouth, with freshness, delineation, and sweet tannin, it is a major sleeper of the vintage that should last for 25+ years. (Tasted two times.) Score: 91-93 (RP)

LES ORMES DE PEZ

196006    (XD)  750 mL

$52  per btl    $156  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 88-90       DEC: ****       WS: 92-95       JR: 17+       WE: 90-92       GD: 16.5       TJW: 9.3

TASTING NOTE:  Superb concentration, with spice, currant and berry character. Full and velvety. So long. At same quality level as the legendary 1955, or 1959. Score: 92-95 (WS)

LES PAGODES DE COS
2nd Wine of Ch. Cos d'Estournel

197327    (XD)  750 mL

$89  per btl    $267  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 91-94*       DEC: ****       WS: 90-93       JR: 15.5       GD: 16.5       TJW: 9.3

TASTING NOTE:  The 2009 Les Pagodes de Cos is also a remarkable offering. Composed of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, it tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol, and is better than most Cos d’Estournel vintages produced in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. It is a full-bodied, opulently concentrated wine of amazing richness, density, and intensity. As with the grand vin, the harvest began on September 26 and finished on October 10. This wine possesses this vintage’s classic characteristics of enormous power, massive fruit, and extraordinary freshness and precision - largely unprecedented, particularly for Cabernet-based wines in the Medoc. (Tasted once.) Score: 91-94* (RP)

LILIAN LADOUYS

$28  per btl    $84  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 84-86       DEC: ***       WS: 92-95       JR: 15.5       WE: 92-94       TJW: 9.1

TASTING NOTE:  Dark color, with a spiced nose of cloves and cardamom. Tar too. Full-bodied, with round and velvety tannins and a rich, fruity aftertaste. Gorgeous young wine. Score: 92-95 (WS)

MONTROSE
2e Cru

200980    (XD)  750 mL

$249  per btl    $747  per 3-btl. lot

RP: 96-100*       DEC: *****       WS: 97-100       JR: 16.5+       WE: 95-97       GD: 16       TJW: 9.7

TASTING NOTE:  Big and structured, delivering wild aromas of Indian spices, crushed berry, sweet tobacco and coffee. Full-bodied, with loads of velvety, chewy tannins and a long spicy finish. The château says this is like the 1990, but I think it could be even better. It's certainly better made. Score: 97-100 (WS)

PHÉLAN SÉGUR

199471    (XD)  750 mL

TASTING NOTE:  Deep aromas of crushed blackberries and fresh herbs. Full-bodied, with round and soft tannins and a polished texture on the finish. Rich and structured. Could be best ever from here. Score: 90-93 (WS)

TASTING NOTE:  The 2009 Tronquoy Lalande (a blend of 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot) boasts a dense purple color along with a beautiful bouquet of boysenberries, spring flowers, black currants, and a hint of ink, a full-bodied, supple, opulent mouthfeel, and a long finish. It should drink nicely for 10-15 years. (Tasted two times.) Drink: 2010-2025. Score: 90-93* (RP)
