“2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability.”

ALTER EGO
2nd Wine of Ch. Palmer

618181  (XD) 750mL

$129 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  A blend of 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Alter Ego de Palmer is very deep purple-black in color and gives up exuberant crushed red currants, red cherries, black plums and mulberries with touches of forest floor, garrigue and lavender plus a waft of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a good core of plummy fruit and very soft, plush tannins, sparked by just enough freshness, finishing fruity.  Score: 90-92 (RP)

2e Cru

626242  (XD) 750mL

$119 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  94–96. Barrel Sample. While the wood flavors are palpable in this wine, so are the firm tannins and dense black fruit. These elements suggest a wine that will have power and great concentration while also generous blackberry fruits. Drink from 2024.  Score: 95 (WE)

CANTENAC-BROWN
3e Cru

622787  (XD) 750mL

$89 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The dial is just a little more turned-up here compared to most Margaux this year, but it works. Subtle charred oak notes are evident on the nose, with tight, savoury cassis and bilberry running through the mid-palate without dipping at all. It ends well, with a breadcrumb trail of carefully placed fruits. Nobody is going to call this broad-shouldered or a fruit bomb, but it is successfully expressed and really elegant, with layers of flavour. It's a wine that should be lovely to open in around eight years, so a little earlier than usual, but with good ageing potential. Drinking Window: 2024-2038.  Score: 92 (DEC)

D'ISSAN
3e Cru

626119  (XD) 750mL

$109 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 d’Issan was picked from 18 September to 3 October, the earliest since 2003. It was cropped at 43hl/ha and matured in 50% new oak. It has an elegant and understated bouquet with blackberry, black truffle and pencil lead aromas, quite Pauillac in style compared to previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, quite saline in the mouth with black fruit, tar and minerals towards the lightly spiced finish that lingers in the mouth. It will benefit from several years in bottle but this continues a purple patch for this historic Margaux. (Neal Martin)  Score: 90-92 (VIN)

FERRIÈRE

624668  (XD) 750mL

$75 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Ferrière is a decidedly powerful wine. Succulent black cherry, plum, new leather, menthol, gravel and smoke flesh out in this dense, pliant Margaux. Even with all of its forward fruit, the 2017 possesses terrific supporting structure and tannic backbone. There is a good bit of depth and intensity to back things up. The 2017 is beautifully done. Frost damage was minimal at just a few percent.  Score: 90-93 (VIN)

GISCOURS
3e Cru

626259  (XD) 750mL

$107 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  An accomplished, enjoyable Giscours. The fruit character is less generous than 2015 and 2016, but it still has presence and charm. Damson, bilberry, charcoal and slate are cradled by fine tannins that point to well-controlled extraction. There's no dip through the mid-palate, and the overall structure is juicy and elegant rather than exuberant. A juicy frame that will age well. Drinking Window 2025-2038.  Score: 93 (DEC)

LABÉGORCE Cellar Starter

619007  (XD) 750mL

$49 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  An excellent Labegorce, full of rich black fruits, textured and layered. A great success in the vintage, with a mouthwatering delivery that holds itself with confidence. MALESCOT ST-EXUPÉRY
3e Cru

624676  (XD) 750mL

$95 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Malescot St. Exupéry has a simpler bouquet than recent vintages with high-toned red cherry and raspberry fruit, quite “warm” compared to its peers and it would benefit from a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. It is not a complex Malescot St. Exupéry but I admire the balance and focus. There is plenty of tightly wound red berry fruit laced with cedar and smoke, quite finessed towards the finish with a long spicy aftertaste. I would just like the aromatics to step up to the grade of the palate, so let’s see how this shows once in bottle. Drinking window: 2022-2040. (Neal Martin)  Score: 91-93 (VIN)

$925 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Château Margaux charges from the gate with opulent kirsch, raspberry preserves, wild blueberries and cassis notions accented by roses, violets, Chinese five spice and fragrant earth with touches of underbrush and truffles. MARQUIS D'ALESME-BECKER

619155  (XD) 750mL

$69 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Marquis d’Alesme Becker was picked from 25 September to 6 October and matured in 65% new oak. It has a very pure bouquet with black cherries, blueberry and violet aromas that are detailed and pure. This is quite a sophisticated Margaux and it manifests more and more complexity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple black fruit laced with spice and white pepper. This feels very cohesive with impressive weight in the mouth, good grip with a dense, almost sinewy finish that is determined to make an impression. This is a very fine Margaux that deserves four or five years in bottle. Drinking window: 2022-2040. (Neal Martin)  Score: 92-94 (VIN)

PAVILLON ROUGE
2nd Wine of Ch. Margaux

628446  (XD) 750mL

$350 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  This has great concentration, with carefully balanced black fruits that are fleshy and inviting but unfussy. The berry size was a little bigger than last year after the September rains (70mm in 20 days) so there is a feeling of juice and mouthwatering seduction once you give it some time to work through the initial austerity. There's no dilution through the mid-palate, and it's one of the few second wines that really gets your attention in 2017. They lost 10% of the crop to frost, giving a yield of 35hl/ha, with no secondary fruits used in Pavillon or Margaux (not even the first generation buds from any affected plots). 22% of total production is the lowest ever for Pavillon, and combined with the low yield means there will be 40% fewer bottles. The vineyards were entirely organically farmed in 2017, although there are still no plans to go for certification. Harvested 18-26 September. 3.7pH. IPT 73 - as high as last year. 4% Cabernet Franc also in the blend. Will be 60% new oak. Drinking Window: 2024-2038.  Score: 92 (DEC)

PRIEURÉ-LICHINE
4e Cru

624304  (XD) 750mL

$72 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  This is the definition of a wine to buy in an off-vintage. It has the signature of the last few years, but in an early-drinking package. It's a little oaky and smoky for sure, but handles it well and delivers punch and personality without overstating the case. Ripe damson fruits help to deliver impact, even if the fruit is generally a touch below the exuberance of the last two years. TASTING NOTE:  Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot and sporting a deep garnet-purple color, the 2017 Rauzan-Segla (Rausan-Segla) has a profound nose of cassis, warm blackberries and black plums with touches of baking spices, violets, mocha and smoke plus a waft of garrigue. SIRAN

624684  (XD) 750mL

$49 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  This is rather lovely, with excellent aromatics and fine tannins with a feeling of flex and precision. There is no question that the fruit has form and density, with focussed cassis and tobacco notes and some slate. This also lasts well on the palate. The fruit is at the fresher end of the scale, as is true across most wines in 2017, but it's clearly successful. Hubert de Boüard is consultant at this estate, owned by Edouard Miailhe with winemaker Marjolaine DeFrance. There was no frost here, and the season was two weeks ahead of normal. CARRUADES DE LAFITE ROTHSCHILD
2nd Wine of Ch. Lafite Rothschild

624577  (XD) 750mL

$350 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  Lafite got to enjoy a year without excess and without frost, and this is elegant stuff. The tannins are a touch rigid at the beginning, supporting firm black autumnal fruits, classically framed and a touch austere, with cigar box smoke adding a swirl of complexity. As with many of the second wines in Pauillac this year, this is excellently put together but on the savoury side, reflecting the story of the vintage. 20% new oak. 2nd Wine of Ch. Lynch-Bages

622753  (XD) 750mL

$69 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Echo de Lynch Bages is absolutely delicious. Pliant and open-knit, the 2017 offers up a compelling mélange of red berry fruit mixed with floral and spice notes. In 2017, Echo has a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon than is typical. I very much admire the wine's creamy, inviting personality. The palate is very well balanced and full of energy. The acidity neatly counterbalances with saline apply fruit with great persistence on the finish, and touches of lemongrass that linger on the aftertaste. This is one of the best Pessac-Léognan whites that you will find in this vintage. (Neal Martin)  Score: 92-94 (VIN)

DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER
Cru Classé

622936  (XD) 750mL

$109 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge was cropped at 34hl/ha between 11 and 29 September and is matured in 35% new oak for 18 months. It has a vivacious bouquet with quite generous black fruit, raspberry, brine and black olive that is well-defined and focused, if not possessing the complexity of the previous two vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly edgy tannin – layers of black fruit interlaced with melted tar and graphite, closing in a little towards the finish with a gentle grip. I appreciate the deft manner in which this fans out and leaves a mineral residue on the finish. A Domaine de Chevalier of refinement rather than power, one with “buvabilité” or “drinkability”. HAUT-BRION
1er Cru

628362  (XD) 750mL

$925 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  A hugely captivating wine, one of the contenders for red of the vintage. There's an incredible plush, dense texture to the fruit here, with just the slightest pulling back on the final section that suggests the damson, cassis and black cherry fruit is not at the full extent of ripeness seen in 2016 and 2015, but there is absolutely no question that this is a successful, rich and well-expressed wine. TASTING NOTE:  This is a lovely fragrant wine, less dense and concentrated than the last two vintages but extremely accomplished. Frost only affected 0.3% of the vineyard area, leading to yields of almost 50hl/ha across the two estates in 2017. It was the third earliest harvest on record at Haut-Brion, commencing on 24 August for the whites and 31 August for the reds, with the only real difficulty to overcome being the low levels of sunshine over the summer. 22% of production went into this wine. LES CARMES HAUT-BRION

625566  (XD) 750mL

$145 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is subtle and understated, but it’s all there. Lifted aromatics, bright, red-toned fruit and silky tannins add to the wine's brilliant, chiseled personality. I find the 2017 more precise and nuanced than in the recent past, with less overt power. It's hard to know exactly if the style of the 2017 is a result of the growing conditions of the year, or the result of an evolution in winemaking that includes the introduction of terra cotta, among other things. I certainly get the sense Guillaume Pouthier reined the wine back a bit in 2017. No matter. The end result is all that counts, and in 2017 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is positively stellar. As always, the high percentage of Cabernet Franc and a healthy dollop of whole clusters give Les Carmes an explosive bouquet and plenty of saline-infused energy. A closing flourish of sweet red berry fruit, mint, rose petal and mocha leaves a lasting impression. The 2017 is not an obvious wine, but it sure is gorgeous. Don't miss it! PAPE CLÉMENT
Cru Classé

623843  (XD) 750mL

$159 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Pape Clément is fabulous. One of the rare 2017s with a real sense of structure, Pape Clément possesses dazzling intensity from start to finish. A rush of dark cherry, plum, chocolate and grilled herb notes hits the palate as this majestic, towering wine shows off its personality. Time in the glass brings out a brighter and more floral set of flavors. The 2017 is the first vintage made with a portion of whole clusters, an inspiration Bernard Magrez takes from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where he recently bought a small property. Quite simply, the 2017 Pape Clément is a magnificent wine by any measure. Don't miss it. The only problem with the 2017 is that yields are down 40% because of frost.  Score: 94-97 (VIN)

CALON-SÉGUR Buyers' Choice
3e Cru

625483  (XD) 750mL

$159 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  This is rich, with fresh blueberry and cassis notes. The fruit is on the elegant side, and this should be earlier to drink than the 2016 and even the 2014. Technical director Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen and the team took an interesting approach to building the mid-palate, increasing the persistency by re-integrating the press wine immediately after vinification, so having both free run and press wine together during maceration. Blending the press wine at such an early stage took a leap of faith, as did using so much of the young, nine-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon in the first blend. $49 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  This has a floral edge to it and a depth of blueberry fruit that's a little shy at first but comes through on the mid-palate. I like how this fits together, with carefully placed fruits and soft tannins. This isn't an especially powerful Marquis and should be ready to drink within 3 to 4 years, lasting for at least fifteen. There was no frost at Calon, just the dry summer interrupted by 40-50mm of rain at the end of June and then 80mm in September to contend with. This was around the same amount as in 2015, but in September 2015 it fell over two days, whereas this year the rain lasted around 10, which was fine for the Cabernets but a little trickier for the Merlots. 50% of production went to Marquis de Calon, and 10% to the third wine, St-Estèphe de Calon, not tasted here. 30% new oak. Medium-bodied with a rock-solid frame and an exquisitely ripe, very fine-grained texture, it has wonderful freshness with electric energy and a very long, minerally finish. Possessing great poise and intensity, this is one of the greatest Montrose's I have tasted!  Score: 96-99 (RP)

ORMES DE PEZ

623033  (XD) 750mL

$52 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Les Ormes de Pez was matured in 45% new oak with 13.42% alcohol. None of the vines were touched by frost. Cropped at round 50hl/ha, it has a clean, pure red cherry, blackcurrant and cedar-scented bouquet, more Pauillac in style than Saint-Estèphe. The palate is well balanced with ripe tannin that feel more malleable than previous vintages at this stage, a little saline in the mouth with a silky smooth finish. This will be delicious over the next couple of decades and I suspect it will be more approachable than the 2016. Don’t ignore this. Drinking window: 2021-2036. (Neal Martin)  Score: 91-93 (VIN)

PHÉLAN SÉGUR

622894  (XD) 750mL

$75 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Phélan Ségur is powerful, brooding and intense, but also has more than enough fruit to stand up to the tannins. Dark red/purplish fruit, smoke, incense, charcoal embers and gravel give the wine much of its distinctive savory/earthy personality. Time in the glass brings out a more floral, red-toned quality that is hugely appealing. Phélan Ségur has the potential to be one of the dark horses of 2017. Certainly, this is a very strong showing relative to the vintage and where Phélan has been in the recent past. In 2017, the Grand Vin contains an unusually high amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), much of which was able to hang until early October, with 34% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Fabrice Bacquey opted to reduce exposure to oxygen during fermentation with the goal of maintaining as much freshness in the fruit as possible. Tasted two times.  Score: 90-93 (VIN)

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Beychevelle is absolutely gorgeous. Creamy and beautifully layered on the palate, Beychevelle exudes exotic richness in its ripe red/purplish berry fruit. TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Branaire-Ducru offers lovely depth and density. The characteristic dark red/purplish fruit character of Brainaire comes through beautifully. As always, Branaire is a wine of polish and finesse. Stylistically, the 2017 comes across as a smaller scaled and more accessible version of the 2015. If that sounds appealing, well, it is. POUJEAUX

623710  (XD) 750mL

$57 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  Right from the nose this has rich, deep cassis and dark fruit notes, as well as a lovely juicy vibrancy through the palate. There are firm tannins that have some vibrancy to them. Although it’s not as persistent in structure as in 2016 and 2015, this is an extremely successful wine in the 2017 vintage. Aged in 33% new oak. A yield of 26hl/h, so there will be reduced volumes – an estimated 140,000 bottles this year. Fortunately the gravelly heart of the vineyard was not affected by the frost. There is an austerity to the tannins but it's still hugely enjoyable. Drinking Window: 2021-2032.  Score: 92 (DEC)

DOISY-DAËNE
2e Cru

623215  (S) 375mL

$35 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  A wine of real density and weight, the 2017 Doisy-Daëne is positively stunning. It is also likely to require a number of years to be at its best, given its currently reserved, shy state of mind. The 2017 is marked by an almost phenolic impression of structure. TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Suduiraut was picked via three tries, with 75% of the crop picked in the second tries from 4 to 15 October. The harvest finished on 19 October, one of the last in Sauternes and after Yquem. “We were touched by the frost but not in the top terroir,” winemaker Pierre Montegut told me. It is matured in around 50% new oak. It has an expressive, harmonious bouquet with dried honey, white flowers and a touch of gripe water (a children’s medicine for those in the United States. I have been informed there is no equivalent on the other side of the Atlantic). The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, well judged acidity, plenty of botrytized fruit with a long, lightly spiced finish that feels so fresh and vital. TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Clos L'Eglise is a wine that brings together power, tension and energy. There is quite a bit of richness to the fruit, but also plenty of supporting structure. Beams of underlying tannin give the 2017 its drive and sense of direction, while keeping the flavors perked up. Bright red stone fruit, mint and white pepper lead into a sculpted finish lifted by striking floral notes. TASTING NOTE:  This has a lovely silkiness to it, one of the real successes in the appellation in terms of the texture and the quality of the tannins. It's a fairly powerful 100% Merlot with 100% new oak - an unusual combination because the old vine Cabernet Franc was lost to frost in 2017. This is one of the few wines that gets close to the quality of 2016, even if it's not quite there in terms of its completeness. 30 days maceration at reasonable temperatures has brought out the heart of plump blackberry fruit, while delivering subtle tobacco and slate elegance. LA CABANNE

619106  (XD) 750mL

$65 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 La Cabanne is a Pomerol cru that flies just under the radar. This latest release continues to prove that François Estager owns some serious terroir, located right next to Trotanoy in fact. It has a nicely detailed bouquet with scents of blackberry, pencil lead and undergrowth aromas. It is not as complex as the 2015 or 2016 but there is palpable focus and good vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with well-defined red berry fruit laced with brown spice and a discrete, almost cola-like tincture. This feels nimble, poised and for want of a better word, joyful. It might not be the most profound Pomerol that François Estager has ever made but I can see this drinking beautifully over the next decade. (Neal Martin)  Score: 90-92 (VIN)

TASTING NOTE:  A powerful, muscular wine fully representing the slightly more masculine style that the Christian Moueix stable has exhibited over the past few years. This is an estate that has been fascinating to watch develop, as it sets to establish its own identity in the post-Petrus era on this side of the family. Ambitious and well-constructed, it has clear ageing potential. There was no frost here, so they were able to benefit from an early-budding year. That kick of Petit Verdot gives a clear shot of dark, exotic spices through the finish - Christian Moueix was responsible for its addition a few years ago. TASTING NOTE:  Lafleur’s 2017 Merlot came in just before the rain. Cellar Master Omri Ram commented, “The 2017 Merlot was very similar to the 2015. With the Cabernet Franc, we waited; we were patient, and it came in ripe yet more fresh than the Merlot.” As it turns out, that combo of the wonderfully decadent Merlot and the galvanizing Cabernet Franc are just magic! Blended of 47% Merlot and 53% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Lafleur has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and opens with a positively electric intensity of red and black fruits—cherries, black plums, red currants, black raspberries and mulberries—with touches of roses, cinnamon stick, smoked meats and forest floor plus a hint of truffles. TASTING NOTE:  The more gravelly soils of Lafleur have responded beautifully this year, expressing a real creaminess and density to the black fruits. There's a clear Cabernet Franc edge to the nose and to the attack on the palate, with a corresponding austerity and tightness to the tannins and a slightly chewy finish. There's a sense of momentum as the acidity rises through the palate, and it certainly has some of the power and sense of confident elegance of the 2016 vintage here. PÉTRUS

628735  (XD) 750mL

$1,999 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  There was no frost here, but they still had to contend with 100mm of rain at the end of June, then one-third of regular rainfall over July and August, then rain again in September. The young vines were more affected by drought, but the older vines had to be left for a few weeks to digest the early September rains. As you might expect, we don't need to worry unduly about winemaker Olivier Berrouet's ability to handle it - but you can certainly see that he had to make a number of careful choices. The harvest, for example, was from 8-28 September - a long spread for such a small vineyard, but they needed to be really careful and work plot by plot. The resulting wine has an extremely powerful nose; the aromatics are high and very complex. On the palate I get dark chocolate, slate, liquorice and damson flesh, giving a dense, compact structure followed by a floral finish. It's fresh and complex, with notable spice. The tannins are deceptive, building over the palate to a fairly tannic finish, and it's very persistent, not a large step down from the last two years, even if it's not quite at their heights. ANGÉLUS
1er Grand Cru Classé (B)

628727  (XD) 750mL

$675 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  Emmanuelle has been making wine here for 22 years now. The freshness of the Merlot in 2017 reminds her of 2001 - I would certainly agree, and maybe with a hint of 2014 too. It's a beautiful wine, voluptuous but elegant. These vines were not frosted, but the Cabernet Franc produced less than usual, and they also made an extremely careful selection overall, leading to a yield of 30hl/ha. The wine has great complexity, which is a standout character in 2017, with bilberries, charcoal and plush damson - the Angelus signature of power and glamour. There is good tannic density here and it will clearly merit long ageing. 85,000 bottles of Angelus produced, representing around 80% of total production. Matured in 100% new oak. AUSONE
1er Grand Cru Classé (A)

629501  (XD) 750mL

$1,300 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  Blended of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Ausone offers up slowly emerging notes of crushed black plums, blackberries and mulberries with nuances of anise, violets, new leather and unsmoked cigars plus suggestions of black olives and truffles and a touch of cast iron pan. Medium to full-bodied with firm, very finely grained, super ripe tannins and an uplifting backbone of freshness perfectly supporting the profoundly layered, tightly wound yet incredibly intense fruit, it finishes very long with mineral accents and compelling tension.  Score: 97-99 (RP)

BADETTE

628826  (XD) 750mL

$43 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The likely final blend of the 2017 Badette should be 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it sports a fair bit of oak on the nose with hints of black cherries, crushed black berries and violets plus a waft of garrigue. BARDE HAUT
Grand Cru

624171  (XD) 750mL

$65 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  A rich, unctuous wine, the 2017 Barde-Haut is endowed with magnificent concentration and richness. Inky black fruit, chocolate, menthol, licorice and spice infuse this spectacularly rich, voluptuous Saint-Émilion. The 2017 saw 4-5 days on cold soak about four weeks on the skins, with no SO2 during fermentation. Most of the wine is aging in 300L barrels, which is a bit larger than the norm in Bordeaux.  Score: 92-95 (VIN)

TASTING NOTE:  This is one of the best examples of this wine that I have tasted, reaching the same heights as some of the biggest names in this vintage, and barely a step down from 2016 - great stuff from these guys this year. It's firm, bright, intense and deep, with salinity, grip and a lovely seam of freshness. It has a really excellent, juicy character and good persistency, with notes of liquorice and dark chocolate. BÉLAIR-MONANGE
1er Grand Cru Classé (B)

631911  (XD) 750mL

$239 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  A real success in the vintage, from an estate unaffected by frost. This wine is showing some beautiful floral notes, followed by a palate with lingering aromatics that tease. The well-handled, rich but flexible tannins lend an austerity that bodes well for ageing. The wine really opens up in the glass, and although it's a tighter effort than in the past few years, they are staking their claim to be among the best St-Émilions on the plateau. This is a gorgeous wine, and that austerity is going to fill out beautifully during barrel ageing. Drinking Window: 2026-2040.  Score: 95 (DEC)

CHEVAL BLANC
1er Grand Cru Classé (A)

629295  (XD) 750mL

$1,100 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  A sense of forward motion here makes you smile - a reaction that's missing in many wines this year. The tannins push their way right through the palate, but cradle the cassis and bilberry fruit rather than smother it, helped by the fact that floral and smoky aromatics rise up. There's good persistency and you get that little kick and dance of minerality. The precision engineering is clear, but the overall feeling is simply of cohesion and enjoyment. 3.65ph. 100% new oak, but without a trace even now at this early stage. Approximately 60% of the wine this year came from the gravelly plots which were less affected by the frost, which accounts for a slightly higher level of Cabernet Sauvignon than usual. They used perhaps 1% of secondary budding in this blend (five weeks behind schedule at bud-break and then around 15 days by harvest) and kept picking from 15 September to 11 October - an extremely long schedule compared to most estates in 2017. With around 30% loss to frost, there will be 50,000 bottles of Cheval in 2017, compared to 116,000 in 2016. 21hl/ha yield this year, 75% destined for the grand vin. 624841  (XD) 750mL

$67 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Clos de l'Oratoire is pliant and supple, with striking balance of fruit and tannin. In some recent vintages, Clos de l'Oratoire has been more massive, but I have to say, the balance of the 2017 is really quite compelling. A rush of red cherry, plum, blood orange, pomegranate and mint builds into the racy, pliant finish. This is a gorgeous vintage for Clos de l'Oratoire. TOUR SAINT CHRISTOPHE

623173  (XD) 750mL

$49 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  The 2017 Tour Saint Christophe is another in a series of brilliant wines from proprietor Peter Kwok and consultant Michel Rolland. The 20% Cabernet Franc adds striking brightness to play off the dense, dark Merlot in this plush, beautifully nuanced Saint-Émilion. Already impeccably balanced, the 2017 appears to have a very promising future. Mocha, espresso, wild flowers and mint add the closing shades of nuance. Tasted three times.  Score: 91-94 (VIN)

TROPLONG MONDOT
1er Grand Cru Classé (B)

626077  (XD) 750mL

$185 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  Aymeric de Gironde arrived here from Cos d'Estournel in September 2017, and he is clearly intending to make his mark. To get things started, they have brought the harvest dates forward (particularly on the Butte de Mondot, where drainage in recent years has stopped that clay mound being as cool as it once was). They have also stopped carrying out malolactic in new oak and brought the level of new oak down to 65% from 90%. They have a new consultant in the form of Thomas Duclos - this is surely his year - and carried out the blending before ageing in barrel, in a nod to Aymeric's left bank experience. Very little here was affected by the frost, giving a yield of 45hl/ha, 95% used for the grand vin. This is a terroir that doesn't need to be dressed up, as I have said several times in the past, and Aymeric is taking what had already begun under Xavier Parrente to the next level. This is one of the few wines to really make your heart race in 2017, with its blueberry and cool, black fruit notes with zippy minerality and a juicy, slightly saline finish. There is plenty of power, but it's contained, and the fruit is almost surprising in its purity and direction - it makes everyone around the table start talking. This is an extremely surprising 2017, one that I absolutely recommend without hesitation. Drinking Window: 2026-2040.  Score: 96 (DEC)

ALCÉE

626127  (XD) 750mL

$29 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  Nicolas Thienpont’s Alcee comes from a two-part vineyard, but the section that is by La Prade didn't get frosted, and these vines were exclusively used to make this 2017 Alcee. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with intense cassis, chocolate-covered cherries and blackberry preserves notes with touches of baking spices and lilacs. The palate is medium to full-bodied and packed with black fruits and spice layers, framed by ripe, plush tannins and finishing with impressive length.  Score: 90-92+ (RP)

LA PRADE

623116  (XD) 750mL

$25 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  Owned by Nicolas Thienpont, La Prade's seven hectares, located at the top of the limestone plateau close to Francs in the Côtes de Franc and the highest in altitude there, saw no frost this year. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 La Prade has pretty scents of warm black plums, black forest cake and lilacs with touches of cigar box and cinnamon. The palate is medium to full-bodied with great concentration and depth, supported by a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. Very impressive!  Score: 90-92+ (RP)

LA VIEILLE CURE

638007  (XD) 375mL

$21 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  This estate has done a good job with this wine, creating an attractive glamorous edge of smoked rosemary around the muscular tannins. It’s clearly well extracted because the fruit is savoury rather than exuberant. Château La Vieille Cure is often a bellwether to the success of a vintage, as it’s normally so reliable. However the frost of 2017 definitely added a rogue element, even if certain spots close to the river were spared. Classically controlled and reined in, this is a medium term drinker, with a lovely juicy frame around soft summery fruits. Drinking Window: 2020-2032.  Score: 90 (DEC)

622738  (XD) 750mL

$79 per btl.

TASTING NOTE:  Utterly gorgeous freshness and zip, with intensity of flavour. It has a little more Sémillon than usual, due to frost affect the Sauvignon Blanc, which seems to mean the aromatics of the Muscadelle are a little more prominent than a classic Lynch Bages Blanc, adding a white flower honeysuckle lift.
