CHÂTEAU DE PULIGNY-MONTRACHET CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET  2003
AC
21667    (XD)            750 mL    $69

TASTING NOTE: Succulent fruit marks this lush '03 white. Lemon, peach, toasted almond and vanilla notes remain bright and the oak spice lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2010. Score - 88. (Bruce Sanderson, www.winespectator.com, June 30, 2006)

CHÂTEAU DE PULIGNY-MONTRACHET PULIGNY-MONTRACHET  2002
AC
6478    (XD)            750 mL    $89

TASTING NOTE: (this is actually from Chalumeaux, but, according to Etienne de Montille, back in 1977 the then-owner brought in topsoil from elsewhere and lost the right to label this fruit as premier cru) Good pale color. Fresh, subtle aromas of peach, nuts and marzipan. Densely packed but lively and minerally, with lovely lift and a light touch. Tight in the mouth and on the finish but already showing incipient complexity. Montille says this wine was more affected by the bottling than the Chassagne villages.  Score - 90(+?). (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2004)

Domaine Dujac Meursault  2004
AC, Côte de Beaune
40485    (XD)            750 mL    $52

In his acclaimed book, Burgundy: A Comprehensive Guide to the Producers, Appellations, and Wines (1990),Robert Parker Jr. wrote: "Domaine Dujac is one of the very finest estates in Burgundy. Proprietor Jacques Seysses is one of the most influential and innovative winemakers in the Côte d'Or, and his wines are always among its most elegant, complex, and flavourful". This rich, well-balanced Meursault displays attractive aromas of honey, pear and fresh cream. An exquisite match for seafood or mature cheeses.

Domaine Laroche Les Blanchots RÉserve de l'Obedience Chablis Grand Cru  1999

40444    (XD)            750 mL    $140

TASTING NOTE: Rich and ripe, with a lot more oak than usual for a Chablis. Lovely, with plenty of ripe fruit, marzipan, spice and pear tart character to balance the wood. Full-bodied, seductive and very long. Drink now through 2007.  Score - 93. (Per-Henrik Mansson, www.winespectator.com, Dec. 15, 2001)

Henri Boillot Bourgogne  2004
AC
626879    (XD)            750 mL    $40

Robert Parker's website posted the following on April 19, 2005: "But Henri Boillot? Those who keep track of who’s hot in Burgundy know that Henri Boillot has only recently attained superstar status. It has only been a short period (less than two years) that the wines of Henri Boillot have gathered the attention of white Burgundy lovers… ." The 2004 is bright and fruity with appealing aromas that lead to sweet and minerally flavours. There is good complexity here and great quality.

Henri Boillot Chassagne-Montrachet  2004
AC
48371    (XD)            750 mL    $70

TASTING NOTE: (early malo) Exotic aromas of ripe pineapple and gingery spices; more Meursault than Chassagne. Then ripe, sweet and fruit-driven, with pineapple, citrus and apricot flavors nicely lifted by fresh acidity and complicated by a floral element. Offers an enticing balance of sweetness and fruit.  Score - 88-90. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2005)

Henri Boillot Chassagne-Montrachet Les Baudins  2004
AC, 1er Cru
48397    (MD)            750 mL    $100

Among white Burgundy lovers, Henri Boillot has been dubbed one of the new superstars. Boillot's wines live up to the hype. The Les Baudins has a very expressive nose of nectarine, peach, lemon and spices, a refrain that is repeated with clarity on the palate. Vibrant with excellent acidity and a touch of sweetness, this will leave an impression well beyond its lingering finish.

Henri Boillot Chassagne-Montrachet Les ChaumÉes  2004
AC, 1er Cru
48363    (XD)            750 mL    $99

TASTING NOTE: A layered nose of smoke and very ripe peach aromas gives way to bigger, richer and fuller flavors that possess excellent dry extract levels and a nervous, vibrant and driving finish that is explosive and long. This is so intense that one can't help but salivate and stylistically speaking, this is my favorite among this group of Chassagne 1ers. Drink: 2008+  Score - 90. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, July 2006)

HENRI BOILLOT MEURSAULT LES CHARMES  2004
AC, 1er Cru
626853    (XD)            750 mL    $119

TASTING NOTE: A background trace of wood highlights very ripe orchard fruit aromas and a hint of lemon rind that complement the rich, full and sweet flavors that possess buckets of dry extract, indeed so much so that this has an almost tannic quality to the racy and linear finish. The finish is quite dry yet there is an underlying sweetness here that gives a seductive and silky quality to the mid-palate. Drink 2008+  Score - 92. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, July 1, 2006)

Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet Cos de la MouchÈre  2004
AC, 1er Cru, Monopole
48330    (XD)            750 mL    $110

TASTING NOTE: Clove and flint on the nose. Sweet, dense and powerful, with a creamy, distinctly old-viney texture. This boasts outstanding richness and extract for the vintage. Saturates the palate with flavor on the finish. These 65-year-old vines produced a moderate 35 hectoliters per hectare in 2004, compared to 42 in 1999 and just 18 in 2003, according to Boillot.  Score - 92-95. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2005)

J. Moreau Chablis Valmur  2005
AC, Grand Cru
52464    (XD)            750 mL    $70

The 2005 Burgundy vintage has had wine critics exhausting their respective lists of superlatives. This Chablis from Valmur benefits from this splendid vintage. Its expressive nose offers mineral notes with hints of peach and almond. The palate is replete with flavours of white fruit and bitter almond. There is a refreshing acidity on the palate, typical for a young wine, that will soften with ageing. Excellent now with salmon or shellfish, but will reward cellaring.

Jean Boillot Puligny-Montrachet Les PerriÈres  2004
AC, 1er Cru
48348    (XD)            750 mL    $110

TASTING NOTE: A very subtle hint of wood frames citrus and white flower fruit aromas of striking elegance and complexity that lead to stunningly precise, vibrant and detailed middle weight flavors yet despite the almost painful intensity, there is ample buffering mid-palate fat that is just enough to prevent the finish from being anything other than subtly austere. There is however an underlying tension here that will require a few years in bottle to really allow this to unwind and open fully. Drink: 2009+.  Score - 91. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, July 2006)

William Fevre Chablis Bougros Côte Bouguerots  2005
AC
51821    (XD)            750 mL    $74

TASTING NOTE: Pale, green-tinged color. Subtle, precise aromas of lime, quinine and minerals. Broad, rich and dry but with terrific grip and an impression of weightlessness. The complex flavors of powdered stone, minerals, lime blossom and citrus peel resemble those of the young '06. Superb classic Chablis with a rising finish and lovely minerality …  Score - 93. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2007)

Red Table Wine
France – Burgundy

Domaine de la Vougeraie Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice  2003
AC
980516    (XD)            750 mL    $75

TASTING NOTE: Subtle oak aromas frame bright and very ripe pinot fruit and the flavors are quite like those of the Gevrey villages as they are very soft, forward, sweet and supple with good finishing freshness and persistence. This too is so forward that it could easily be approached now though again, it will be better with a year or two in bottle.  Score - 88. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, Jan. 2005)

Domaine de la Vougeraie Pommard  2003
AC
51060    (XD)            750 mL    $54

TASTING NOTE: Quite reserved but pretty red pinot fruit nuanced with undertones of earth, wet leaves and a hint of spice introduces sweet, punch and wonderfully complex flavors that are quite Pommard-like in character as there are firm tannins and a certain robust quality to the finish. Excellent quality here.  Score - 88. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, Jan. 2005)

Domaine de la Vougeraie Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Marconnets 2003
AC, 1er Cru
51078    (XD)            750 mL    $54

TASTING NOTE: The first vineyard Marchand harvested in 2003, the Savigny-Les-Beaune Marconnets, is produced from 60-year old vines and aged in 50% new oak. Its reveals waxy black cherry scents and a medium-bodied, silky-textured character. Loads of black cherries are found in this fruit-forward effort. Drink it over the next 5 years.  Score - 88. (Pierre Rovani, www.erobertparker.com, Aug. 2005)

DOMAINE DE MONTILLE BOURGOGNE  2001
AC
22483    (XD)            750 mL    $32

TASTING NOTE: A little lean but with good fruit and plenty of interest. Good acidity. No hard edges. Good. From 2005. (Clive Coates, The Vine, April 2003)

DOMAINE DE MONTILLE BOURGOGNE  2002
AC
22871    (XD)            750 mL    $34

TASTING NOTE: Lovely freshness about this wine; ripe, perfumed and silky Pinot fruit with hints of coffee and earthiness. Lovely on the palate too, with a silky texture suffused with earthy fruit that is fine and elegant, with robust tannins adding some weight and good balance. Very good indeed, almost worthy of excellent. (Tom Cannavan, wine-pages.com, Jan. 2004)

DOMAINE HUBERT DE MONTILLE BOURGOGNE  2004
AC
22863    (XD)            750 mL    $32

Domaine Hubert de Montille produces some of the purest expressions of Pinot Noir to be found in Burgundy today. Jancis Robinson, MW, listed this domaine as one of the Burgundy's "Superior Red Producers" of 2004. This 2004 Bourgogne has a pretty nose with distinct earth notes. The palate is round with upfront fruit and racy flavours. Solid quality from a respected producer.

DOMAINE JOSEPH VOILLOT VOLNAY LES CHAMPANS  2004
AC, 1er Cru
15115    (XD)            750 mL    $65

TASTING NOTE: The most expressive nose among these Volnay offerings with a beautifully complex and airy nose of redcurrant, spice and touches of earth and iron that dissolve into supple, sweet and very fresh middle weight flavors that possess lovely balance and texture. Good stuff here that will require moderate patience. Drink 2012+.  Score - 88-91. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, April 2006)

Jean Boillot & Fils Beaune Clos du Roi  2004
AC, 1er Cru
48421    (XD)            750 mL    $69

TASTING NOTE: This too is fruity, expressive and almost airy in character with juicy, succulent and sweet flavors that also offer good volume and a lovely texture that coats the mouth with moderate tannins and fine length. There is limited complexity but this may improve with time and if so, my score may be conservative. Drink: 2008+.  Score - 87. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, April 1, 2006)

Jean Boillot Volnay Les Chevrets  2004
AC, 1er Cru
48405    (XD)            750 mL    $89

TASTING NOTE: Moderately saturated medium red. Cherry, spice and licorice on the nose. Then sweet, lush and silky; fat and solid in the context of this cellar in 2004. Clean and intensely flavored, finishing with sweet tannins and very good length. …  Score - 88-90. (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, March/April 2006)

JEAN-CLAUDE BOISSET CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY  2004
AC
47100    (XD)            750 mL    $63

[Winemaker] Grégory [Patriat] has full control in the vineyards, the grapes only coming from growers where they have long-term contracts and organic cultivation. Very low yields, indigenous yeast, no pumping, little new oak, limited production - typically 2-10 barrels - many of the 2004's are limited to 1,000 bottles (3.5 barrels). It's not just synthetic yeasts that Grégory avoids, also completely verboten is the use of enzymes or powdered tannin - some chaptalisation may be used, but only on order to prolong fermentations. And while we're talking, why not break the mould some more - with his 2003's, Grégory was the first to bottle and sell top-growth burgundy with a screw-cap. (Bill Nanson, www.burgundy-report.com, Spring 2006)

JEAN-CLAUDE BOISSET POMMARD CLOS DE VERGER  2003
AC,1 er Cru
47084    (XD)            750 mL    $72

TASTING NOTE: Supple and silky, this has a lovely texture for a Pommard. Black cherry and plum fruit is framed by vanilla and smoke, picking up some lingering meaty notes on the finish.  Score - 89. (Joe Czerwinski, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 2005)

Remoissenet PÈre & Fils Morey-St-Denis  1999
AC, Côte de Nuits
37630    (D)            750 mL    $54

Adam Lechmere of Decanter magazine (June 14, 2005) described Remoissenet Père et fils as "one of the most venerable of Burgundy producers". Remoissenet's small-production red Burgundy from Morey-St-Denis is loaded with aromas of red fruit along with some intriguing game notes. With 8 years of ageing under its belt, this is drinking nicely now but it is still very vibrant and will continue to reward cellaring for up to 15 years.
