WORLD PREMIER: THE WINES OF LE CLOS JORDANNE

The Niagara Peninsula, Burgundy’s newest terroir?

In 2000, Burgundy-based Boisset and Vincor Canada established Le Clos Jordanne, a unique domaine devoted to the production of premium and super-premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Niagara Peninsula. Six years later, the first of these outstanding wines are ready for release.

The partners recognized that the Niagara Peninsula shares much in common with Burgundy, the world’s greatest terroir for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, including the cool climate and limestone-based soils.

Le Clos Jordanne constitutes four distinct vineyard sites on the Niagara Escarpment near Jordan, Ontario. A team of veteran viticulturalists from both Burgundy and Niagara, who bring together the best of Old World and New World expertise, manage the vineyards under biodynamic principles. The goal is to produce wines that clearly express the unique terroirs in complete harmony with nature. As of the 2005 vintage, they received their first official Ecocert Canada certificate for organic farming.

The four vineyards are:

Le Clos Jordanne Vineyard - the estate’s principal vineyard, 7.59 ha planted on a natural plateau near the slope of the Escarpment. It features light limestone soils.

Claystone Terrace Vineyard- located a short distance east of the Le Clos Jordanne Vineyard. As the name implies, this 9.91 ha vineyard features heavier, dark clay soils and makes wines that are masculine and robust in style.

La Petite Vineyard – located 2 km east of the previous two vineyards, this is the smallest vineyard at 3.25 ha. This site is currently planted with 100% Pinot Noir. This vineyard’s microclimate enjoys considerably warmer temperatures and has excellent drainage.

Talon Ridge Vineyard – the largest vineyard (27.14 ha) is located on top of the Escarpment. This vineyard faces south rather than north and is less influenced by Lake Ontario’s warming effect but has the benefit of more direct sun on its southerly slope. Slightly cooler in temperature, the vineyard’s wines are lighter and fruitier.

Senior Winemaker/Viticulturalist Thomas Bachelder and his team take great pains to maintain the vineyards’ individual character in the cellar. The grapes are carefully hand picked and immediately transported to the winery where they are hand sorted to ensure only the best berries ever make it to fermentation. As little interference as possible is used during the winemaking process. The wines are aged in French oak barriques before final blending.
