TASTING NOTE: Roederer's NV Brut Premier is a classic and blends about 40% Pinot Noir (from Bouzy and Ambonnay), with 20-25% Meunier (whose share is declining in this blend) and Chardonnay. Two-thirds of the grapes come from estate vineyards, one-third is purchased. (Mind you that all the other Roederer cuvées are sourced exclusively form their own vineyards!) The newest release of the Premier is based on 75% 2009 and 25% reserve wines, which are, since 1996, single vintage wines aged in large oak casks between 6,000 and 10,000 liters. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon holds 160 vats of reserve wines that are stored blank, so without lees, which otherwise would dominate the taste, says Lécaillon. "I don't like the reductive yeast flavors. Instead I am searching for a slightly oxidative and oaky style in my reserve wine." Lécaillon's youngest Premier did not undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine opens very bright, precise and refined, with toasty and white chocolate flavors. Absolutely delicate and elegant on the palate, this is a light, silky textured and remarkably finesse-full Champagne that is fresh on the palate, thanks to its structure and slightly oaky flavors. Excellent. Score: 90 (Stephan Reinhardt, robertparker.com, June 29, 2016)

481861 (XD) 750mL $30.00

TASTING NOTE: This is another cracking release under the Hilltops label. Superbly balanced with an impeccably silky and fine palate, it is a wine you must put in the cellar: it is lovely now, but will reward those who can resist for as long as possible. Drink By: 2030. Special Value. Score: 95 (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, Oct. 6, 2016)

661330 (XD) 750mL $59.95

TASTING NOTE: Moderate wood combines with cool red and dark currant, plum, earth and humus nuances. There is a relatively sophisticated mouth feel to the lightly mineral-infused medium weight flavors that possess excellent punch on the balanced, complex and impressively persistent and mildly austere finish. While not super dense this well-balanced effort still offers fine quality for its level though note that it is built to age and will need at least 4 to 5 years first. Outstanding. Top value. Drink: 2022+. Score: 89 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 15, 2016)

DOC Douro

294116 (XD) 750mL $39.95

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Reserva Old Vines, a field blend from vines averaging around 70 years, was aged in an 85/15 mixture of French and American oak for 16 to 18 months (depending on plot). About two-thirds of the wood was new, the rest second use. This is a very respectable offering in this tough vintage. There are two factors that go into that. First, said Manuel Lobo, normal production was cut notably (normally, he said, there would be 25% to 30% more) as there was a stricter selection. Second, the south-facing vineyards that Crasto owns did better, Manuel said, and some north-facing vineyards were eliminated from the blend. (He said: "Three of the plots didn't make the final blend, and Vinha da Ponte was bottled separately. Vinha Maria Teresa is part of the final blend.") This was opened about three hours in advance of tasting. It is noticeably modest in the mid-palate, very much on the lighter side, but it compensates with its refined and elegant presentation. Surprisingly silky this year, it is fresh and lively, with some grip and complexity on the finish to go with its refinement. As with many 2014s, it seems very accessible very young and I have to wonder if there is much upside to it this year. That does constrain my enthusiasm a bit, but that is an issue for the longer term. For the moment, in its youth and the mid-term, it seems both lovely and irresistible. It is a perfect food wine with some distinction and lift. Score: 91 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Feb. 28, 2017)

Adelaide Hills, South Australia

683011 (XD) 750mL $25.00

Why the name? According to the winery's website: "During the summer months, native Bearded Dragon Lizards sun themselves on the vineyard posts and watch for prey. Occasionally during the grape harvest, these lizards are dislodged and find their way into a load of grapes destined for the winery. Lucky for the lizards, d'Arenberg uses a very gentle crusher which allows them to pass through the ordeal slightly shaken but unharmed. They are returned to the bushland next to the winery." Expect a ripe, balanced, deliciously lizard-free Chardonnay showing notes of French oak and mineral.

The Flowers family is a true pioneer in Sonoma Coast. Theirs were among the first vineyards planted at the edge of the Sonoma Coast in 1991, just three km from the rugged Pacific Ocean cliffs at elevations of over 350 m. This, Flowers' entry-level Chardonnay, is fermented and matured in French oak barrels and perfectly expresses the elegance, precision and quality that has come to define the house style.

IGP Pays d'Oc

493536 (XD) 750mL $25.95

TASTING NOTE: This pours an inky, impenetrable black color, with an intense magenta rim. The deeply fruited nose shows loganberry, sloe, crushed slate, exotic North African spice and well-worn leather. The juicy core on the palate shows delicious development, with intense notes of cinnamon stick and black currant. The long finish is redolent with ripe blackberry, licorice, sweet spice, fig and incense. Exotic, mesmerizing and moreish, few won't love this wine. It's drinking beautifully now and should develop well through 2020. Score: 93 (Wine Enthusiast Importer Connection, Jan. 11, 2016)

DO Ribera del Duero

365288 (XD) 750mL $38.95

TASTING NOTE: The 2012 Antiguos Viñedos (old vineyards) shows great freshness for a warm, ripe vintage like 2012, which resulted in more vibrant wines than initially expected. The cooler zone of Quintana de Pidio and the old vines provided a very good balance to the conditions of the season, and the naturally balanced juice took the oak aging very well (14 months in second use French barriques). There is great balance, concentration and intensity here, very fine tannins and enough freshness. A classic Ribera. Drink Date: 2015-2022. Score: 93 (Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com, Oct. 29, 2015)

483131 (XD) 750mL $71.95

TASTING NOTE: Laherte's 2010 Extra Brut Les Empreintes is a blend of equal parts old-vine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Chardonnay is sourced from a parcel in the Chemins d'Epernay lieu-dit planted in 1957, while the Pinot Noir is from Les Rouge Maisons, which was planted in 1983. A touch of volatile acidity appears in the bouquet, but here it is just a thread in a wine that conveys a real sense of old-vine gravitas in its power, depth and density. Layers of fruit build effortlessly to the creamy, resonant finish. There are perhaps some small imperfections, but it is impossible to ignore the wine's sheer power and breadth. The 2010 was vinified and aged in barrel, with lees stirring, but blocked malolactic fermentation. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: October 2014. Score: 91 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Dec. 2016)

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Chardonnay, which saw 100% malolactic fermentation, has a pronounced and seductive, honeyed-peach and marzipan nose with a cinnamon toast and ginger undercurrent. Apple tart, as well as yeasty and toasty notes grace the silky palate, which has a long and savory finish. This Chardonnay has beautiful harmony and should age well for 5-7 years.
